You have probably looked up at the night sky and wondered what might exist in the far reaches of the cosmos.
Macquarie University researchers, led by Professor Richard McDermid, are working with an international team of experts to develop a revolutionary new instrument called MAVIS. By using a combination of lasers and computer-controlled flexible mirrors, MAVIS will enable astronomers to remove the blurring caused by earth’s atmosphere. For the first time ever, this will allow a telescope on earth to produce images three times sharper and 10 times more sensitive than the Hubble telescope.
MAVIS will enable the team to detect baby supermassive black holes, determine how galaxies form their beautiful structure over billions of years, and see evidence of the first star clusters ever formed in the universe.
