I can only find 3mm cord in the colors I wish to use. I don't know how to recount my cord needs. I can follow your tutorial and it's wonderful as I am brand new. Is there a video I can watch that teaches me how to change the cord needs when using a different cord size or is it simple enough to comment about here? Thank you for showing us how to macrame a project from a beginners perspective. I love how simple you break things down.
@MacrameMakersClub3 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen! 3mm cord is really close to what I used here, so you could even try it out with the same measurements. It might just mean that you will need to knot one less round/row and end up with the same size coaster. Oh, and I'm working on a video about how to calculate your cord needs based on different sizes of cords and different knots. 🙌🏻 Stay tuned, I'll try to make it as beginner friendly as this one.

Thank you so much for replying. I look forward to that video. Being brand new to this I'm having trouble with the knots. I have yet to find a really beginner set of videos not only showing the knots construction but also how to get the work to lol like the proper knots. Maybe it's my cord? I can onlyfind locally a cord that is more like rope. It's stiff and being stiff it's difficult. It doesn't move in my hand like the videos I see. I'm looking for a truly beginner set of videos if there is anything out there you can recommend?

@MacrameMakersClub2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley, that's a lovely design idea! The way to do it is to be careful when and where to add your next cords of the different color. Add your first colored cord in at the very beginning, and then every other new cord of the new color add it next to the first one. You can just play with it, see what comes out and I'm sure you'll learn how to do it. 💛

What's the minimum length of cords required to avoid cutting off too much at the finish? It's a waste to cut off too much as the cutoff bits are too short for other projects (unless used for leaves).
@MacrameMakersClub3 жыл бұрын
Hi Caroline! I know... Unfortunately with macrame you'll always have a little waste. What would be too much for you? I find that I need at least 10cm to comfortably tie the last knots. If I have less than 10cm I get frustrated with the knotting, and the last row becomes a nightmare to knot haha. But if you don't mind a little less cord to knot with, cut shorter cords or keep knotting until you cannot anymore and you'll just end up with a little bigger coaster.v

Hello I want to make a huge one to use a placemat I want it to be about 12 inches , how long , do you think I need my first cords to be, you say each row uses about 3 cms of cord ?
@MacrameMakersClub3 жыл бұрын
Hi Veronica! That's about 30cm, so a bit more than 3 times the size of my coaster. What size cord do you want to use, same as me, 2.5mm? Here I did about 10 rows/rounds, and my starting cords were 80cm long (30cm x 2 to make the lark's head and the clove hitches plus 10cm in each end for spare). So if you want to make it into a placemat, you'd want maybe 30-35 rows/rounds. With a 2.5mm cord you will need around 90-100cm/35-40" of cord to make 30-35 clove hitches. Then you got to double that (cause you're folding the cord in half) and add to both ends a bit more (I add 10cm) so you have some spare for the last knot rows. So I'd say start with 3 cords of about 220cm or 85-90 inches. Plus you'll need quite a lot of filler cord. 😅 I would not cut the filler cord, but feed the filler cord from a spool.

Can this be done using a 3mm cord? If so, will the measurements be the same?
@MacrameMakersClub2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeya! Changing cord size and even brand will affect the cord lengths a bit, but I would give it a try! 3mm is not so different from 2.5mm. Anyway, I'd cut the initial knotting cords the same length, but then since you're using a bigger cord, cut the next knotting cords a bit shorter, like 4-5cm shorter instead of 3cm, and cut the filler cord also shorter, maybe 20-30cm? With a bigger cord you will be knotting fewer rounds for the same size coaster, maybe 8 or 9 rounds, so you'll probably need a bit less cord. Let me know how it goes! 😅
@KashiRadio3 жыл бұрын
Hello Ma'am.... very kindly, I want to ask this one question that at the end of project when the coaster is completed it has long length of cords which are supposed to be trimmed out to finish the product. Can we take smaller length of the cords in the beginning itself to avoid long trimmings in the end.
@MacrameMakersClub3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Yes of course, cut your cords shorter if you want a smaller coaster, or you're using a different size cord, or you just want shorter cords remaining at the end and less waste. I always need about 10cm at least at the end to tie the last knots, otherwise tying the final knot row becomes too tricky for me. Have fun!
@cassiewebb51593 жыл бұрын
What measurements would be ideal for 4.5mm cord?
@MacrameMakersClub3 жыл бұрын
If you'd like a finished product about the same size as this one, then keep the same measurements for the knotting cords. That should work more or less, but it always depends on your handwriting too. The filler cord I'd make shorter, maybe even half it, or 1.2-1.4 meters. Let me know how it goes!

Hi Sandy! For this one I used a 2.5mm cord, but you can use any size cord really. The rule of adding three new cords per row is the same.

I am having trouble between the third and fourth row. The number of cord are different that yours. I counted the same end the third town but when you start the fourth row mine is not the same as yours. 🙁
@MacrameMakersClub3 жыл бұрын
Hi Christie! If you add 3 cords (folded in half, which results in 6 new cords) on each new row you should have in total 18 after the first three rows (6 after the first row, 12 after the second and 18 after the third). How many do you have? Remember not to count your filler cord! 🙏🏼 In any case, if you mistakenly add an extra one or forget to add one, it's not the end of the world. Your coaster may still end up looking neat and flat as a lot of it depends also on your handwriting. 😅

Hi Maxine! You can add more filler cord by simply knotting a few clove hitches with two filler cords (your old one and the new one) and then switching. Then both cord ends are tucked and locked in safely and you can cut them away and keep knotting with your new filler cord. Does that make sense?

Hi the 4th round where u have 18 cords but start adding new cord at 7th cord, then another after 6 cords and isn’t it add the last after 5 cords that makes total of 18 cords…confused.
@MacrameMakersClub3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks for the detailed comment! I love it. Let me try to explain it a bit better. I hope this makes sense - it's much easier to explain with a video than just words. 😅 So I added the first new cord on the fourth row after 7 cords because I wanted to avoid adding it right by the cord that was added on the previous row, so it fits better and has more space. You could also add it after 8 cords instead of 7, so it's even further away from the cord added on the previous row. Then after that first new cord on the fourth row I went back to adding a new cord after 6 cords, like planned (because on that row we got 18 cords which divided by 3 is 6 and we want to add three new cords divided more or less equally within the fourth row). So I did 7-6-6. If you do 7-6-5, then your last new cord gets added right next to the new cord of the third row and we want to avoid that. Does that make sense? Chat me up on Instagram or Facebook @curiouscraftstudio if you wanna chat more, I'm more than happy to! Have the loveliest day!
