Everybody in the beginning of episode 3: "Percy, you should cut loose and finally express your emotions" Everybody at the end of the episode: NOT LIKE THAT!!!! I think in the campain was a beautiful dialogue between Percy and Vex (and then the rest of VM), which made me cry: - You don`t have to be involved in this... - Oh, darling, we are *very* involved.

Matt Mercer was also the guard that Scanlan peed on in the first episode. There's a running gag of him reappearing as an NPC in just about every episode and he has something happen to him. Kind of like a Where's Waldo, but with violence lol. This episode had one of the best hidden jokes: The belt that became a snake was a magic item Vax had. They gave it an eyepatch... a snake from a belt, a belt that holds up his pants... it's a one eyed trouser snake. Weirdly, the Briarwood story arc worked brilliantly as the first season story arc, but honestly it's one of the best parts of the entire Critical Role channel. The look of the Briarwoods is based on a Halloween cosplay Laura Bailey and Travis Willingham did of them. Get ready to be blown away by consistently breath taking animation, great humor, incredibly gory fights and character development that will break your heart. Say hello to the intro of No Mercy Percy.

Matt Actually has a small Cameo in a good number of Episodes, in Episode 1 he's the Guy Scanlan Pissed on, and Episode 2 he's the guy pushing the Cart that Grog steals the Keg of Ale off. It took the Briarwoods about 0.0001 seconds to recognise Percy

In D&D, a vampire can charm someone, but if that person takes damage, the charm is broken. Vax was charmed but it was broken when he was bit. Uriel was charmed but hasn't taken damage so the charm is still effecting him. Also, you only become a vampire after all your health is drained from multiple vampire bites. Welcome to the critter community! Can't wait to see all your reactions.

The reason Keyleth was the only one who noticed he was charmed at the dinner table was because Marisha (the woman who plays her) probably rolled a high perception check in the campaign! I love seeing things in the show that makes it super obvious whether a player rolled good or bad

Yep. That was exactly it. Marisha rolled high and literally everyone else rolled really really low and therefore didn't notice what was happening. Eps 1-2 were a tasty appetizer platter to introduce the party; now we get into the first big arc delving into Percy’s backstory I think Critical Role fans, “critters,” have a special connection to the show bc the kickstarter, which raised $12m, was such a massive, shocking demonstration of support that led to Amazon picking it up for then 2 seasons, now 3 and more. The safe word in the game was “JENGA,” but, copyright and all that

A few D&D / Critical Role notes for this episode: 1. Vampires can charm people, like Sylas did to Uriel. But he didn't charm Vax, he just cast a Hold Person spell to freeze him in place. 2. Vampires heal every round of combat, unless they're in sunlight or have taken radiant-type damage since their last turn. So that's why we saw Sylas heal, but then Pike's spell (just called Holy Weapon) made Grog's axe deal radiant damage, and the healing stopped. 3. In the campaign, Pike wasn't here. Instead, Scanlan was the one who healed Vax -- yes, bards can heal 😁 They changed it partly to advance Pike's arc more, but also because there was another character there who we... Don't talk about. Because that player was an asshole who got kicked out of the group early on, and the entire show has had moments rewritten so they don't need to include him at all.

I'm so excited you got to this episode! This is the kickoff of the Briarwood Arc -- and I think it was an excellent decision for the first season of the show to launch with this story. The story just gets more crazy and intense from here, so I'm looking forward to your future reactions! This may have already been mentioned in the comments of your previous reactions, but just in case: with the exception of Percy's, guns do not exist in this universe. He literally invented the first gun (the one he uses in this episode) in this world, and this technology is entirely unknown outside of him. This background knowledge can be easy to miss from only watching the show, but it provides better insight into why his weapons can have such technical issues. This can also explain other characters' reactions to his weapons -- or lack of reaction, since many wouldn't know what the short metal stick does.

Yeah, Scanaln's songs have no right to slap as hard as they do. Sam Reigel (Who plays Scanlan the Bard in the game and voices him in the show) spoofed top 40 songs in game as means of using his Bard powers, but wrote the songs for the show because there was zero chance they'd be able to pay for all the rights to all those songs. Fortunately, he had help from his brother in law, Peter Habib of Mr. Fantastic. The songs have zero right to be this good, but they totally are.

You noticed that Sylas does not cast a reflection? That is why he was able to charm Sovereign Urial without anybody noticing. And the guards aren't stupid, Vex is just that good a thief. And while Vex was charmed, that kind of charm is broken when the charmed character takes damage (like Sylas biting him).

They couldn't say Jenga, so... Originally, Percy was magically disguised as Vax, and Vax was being sneaky... but he spent too much time hovering over his sister before investigating the Briarwoods' room, it's why he got caught. Scanlan never sang a song, either; but Sam is taking every opportunity, and a song about anal beads is totally in character. Scanlan's performances seem to involve some illusion, to represent the magical effects of his music; the council probably saw what we saw, when he introduced VM in the first episode. Pike makes Grog's axe a holy weapon, which Sylas can't heal. Her medallion is the symbol of the Everlight, and it did crack in the livestream, far earlier than this, when... how to put this... she didn't follow the tenets of her faith? She redeemed herself, though. The snakebelt's name is Simon.

Oh, the Critter community does have its toxic corners, although perhaps less of them then other fandoms? People especially used to hate on Marisha (Keyleth) during campaign 1, saying she had main character syndrome and stuff. During the course of C2, that hate became noticeably less and with C3, pretty much everyone loves her current character... funny how that changed ;) Said C3 character is in this season, btw, but I'm not gonna spoil who it is ;D Maybe you'll figure it out yourselves, you're really good at picking up on stuff. It's a short but *impactful* two moments...

I think you already know some of this, but there should be some new info, and I really do recommend the behind-the-scenes video series linked below. Some people have even reacted to it, and I've watched most of them... what can I say, us Critters are ravenous for CR content between campaign episodes and animation seasons. Hello! So... I confess, the following comment is a copy and paste of one I wrote quite a while back, have tweaked several times, and so now I fall back on it to give a Critical Role explanation. Yes, it's a bit longer than average, but... there's A LOT of stuff to cover, I summarized as best I could. Welcome to the world of Critters. Once upon a time, many years ago a talented voice actor was about to have a birthday, and to celebrate he asked Matt Mercer, another well-established voice actor and talented GM (Game Master) to run a role-playing game for a group of friends... who also all happened to be voice actors. So, a group of nerdy ass voice actors sat around and played D & D. The group had so much fun they made it a regular thing, Felicia Day of 'Geek and Sundry' heard about this game and approached them with the idea of streaming it... and it became a hit in its field, eventually growing into its own company and channel known as Critical Role. Parting on good terms with their previous home, Felicia Day has a small role in the beginning of episode 2. Vox Machina was the group of characters they played in Campaign One, there has also been a Campaign Two, in which the cast plays a whole new group of adventurers. Both are set in the same world, but on different continents, and Campaign Two is set a few decades after the end of Campaign One. Each campaign ran for over a hundred episodes which are all over three hours long, and we are over 50 episodes into Campaign Three. They have also put out a bunch of other content, from talk shows to shorter games in other Role Playing worlds. They have played live shows to sold out theaters, become the number one channel on Twitch, have merch stores in multiple countries, have comics and actually published books of fan art (there are some talented as F*** Critters) they also started a nonprofit charity to... "Leave the World a Better Place." The whole cast would all tell you that they never expected any of this, that it has been a wild ride and they are just trying to hold on and be worthy of it. A few years ago they started looking into the possibility of an animation, but no one was buying, or at least not on their terms, so they went to the Critters to try and raise upwards of $700,000.00 over the course of 45 days in order to make a two-part special for themselves and their fans.... The Critters laughed, and smashed through not just the goal amount, but also ALL of their stretch goals within an hour. By day 45 they had raised nearly 11 and a half million dollars, added a bunch more stretch goals, and the two-part special became a season. Amazon took note and basically funded a second season (3rd season was green lit just before season 2 dropped) to get the streaming rights, but the show is created by Critical Role. Those Nerdy Ass Voice actors are the producers and have full creative control. Most of the people they hired, from writers to artists and composers are also fans who love and know the story and its world. It is one of the truest examples of a project of love I have ever seen. During the production of season one of the animation they put out a series of videos to keep their fans in the loop of how things were going. Interviewing the people behind the scenes and giving non spoiler info about the production. It's a good watch and will really help you understand the devotion and love that went into this project, as well as introduce the cast. Personally, how the lead composer got the job is one of my fav stories. Here is that play list. kzbin.info/aero/PL1tiwbzkOjQwJdoNetaNJE1zZVOE7xi8u The latest big news is that Amazon has signed off on producing a season based on the Campaign Two group, known as The Mighty Nein! And no I did not misspell Nein. They have also reached a multi year agreement that Amazon gets the first look at any new shows OR movies Critical Role wants to produce. Many a fans ears perked up at the mention of possible movies given the popularity of a particular 4 episode and done Campaign, “Exandria Unlimited Calamity” It is a separate adventure set in the same world, but way, WAY, before Vox Machina's or The Mighty Nein's Time. Once again, welcome to this new world, hope you enjoy your visit and stay for a while... it's a devoted community with a lot of heart... and dicks... so many dicks... LoL. Let Chaos Reign!
