No matter how many times I watch this episode, Liam O'Brien's voice work as Vax gets to me. Same goes for the tabletop game episode. Speaking of which, if you get the chance, I recommend looking into the real-world context Liam was going through when this happened in-game. The short version is that he was going through some rough times, and this gave him a tragic but beautiful space to vent and walk through some of that raw emotion in a healthy way. Just so happened to end up doubling as a superbly roleplayed moment, as well. It actually led to Liam being a huge advocate of using games like D&D as mediums of therapy.

Liam O'Brien should get an award nomination of some sort (I don't know if there is an Emmy category for "Actor in an Animated series" or what, maybe even a nod for best actor full stop, but this needs to be recognized).

It's amazing that it took a certain event in this arc for Liam to actually enjoy this time in the game. This crew of nerdy ass voice actors really do love each other as family, and I love that. Matt Mercer did so much for his struggling friend. You can really see in the game when the real world was just too heavy for him.

Yup. In a January 2023 watch along for the first few episodes, Sam Riegel said they were casting for s3, which means scripts were mostly done at that point. By now animation is in progress and they’re doing recording. The M9 teaser showed the script for the pilot, so that’s obviously a few steps behind.

It's important for folks to remember that this isn't scripted like a TV show, it's improv with dice adding an even more random element in. That means that no one is ever really safe, and characters can die and be replaced anytime.

In D&D anyone can die at any time. In a recent campaign, I centered the early storyline completely around one character’s backstory only to watch the character die in the 3rd session.

Marisha Ray (Keyleth's voice actress) had a crush on Will Friedle (Kash) growing up. He was the older brother in Boy Meets World! So they played it up in the livestream and in the show too, which is funny. Will Friedle apparently adlibbed a lot and they kept it in. Like the "I wanna put her in my pocket" line from Ep 2.

Taliesin (Percy) rolled high, he didn't get hit by the trap, Laura (Vex) rolled a natural 1, that's why she died.
@suntiger745
@suntiger745 Жыл бұрын
Close. She technically didn't die because she rolled a natural 1. She died because the damage from the trap took her below 0HP, and it had the specific condition of being instantly lethal, rather than having her go unconscious and starting to roll death saves as usual. If Vex had rolled a natural one, but had more HP so she didn't drop below 0HP, she would have survived.

@theanyktos
@theanyktos Жыл бұрын
Yeah, so this happened pretty much exactly like that in the campaign. They were fresh off a big fight, Vax was down a hole and Percy didn't check for traps. No ill intention or bad guy, just a dumb, hasty mistake. The trap went off and since Vex had run over to see the loot, she and Trinket got caught in the radius of necrotic energy along with Percy. They all made a dexterity saving throw (to see if they managed to get out of the way quickly enough). Percy succeeded, took no damage. Trinket failed, but he still had pretty much all his hitpoints, so the amount of damage the trap did hurt him, but didn't take him to 0. Vex was still low on HP from the last fight. And she rolled a 1, taking sth like 50 points of damage, knocking her down to 0 HP. Under normal circumstances that wouldn't be that big a deal, the character just goes unconscious and then there's a bit of time (determined by how well they roll on their death saves and if they take any _more_ damage) where someone can heal them. Except. This wasn't an ordinary trap. This was a trap guarding the final resting place of the champion of the goddess of fate and death. Her chosen. Of course that's gonna be deadly. Part of the mechanic of the trap was that if the damage it deals takes you to 0 HP, you just die. No death saves, no going unconscious, no getting healed, just dead. Of course the cast didn't know that initially. They weren't worried in the slightest, including Laura (Vex), since there were like 4 people with healing capabilities present, and they probably had some healing potions on hand. Sam (Scanlan) even joked about how Vex just died. When Matt (the DM) asked Laura to confirm she did in fact go to 0, the mood at that table changed _real quick._

Small note about Grog's beard and the belt. The belt is The Belt of Dwarven Kind, and it does many things (it's a really nice item) but the one Travis (Grog's player) was most interested in was the part that the person wearing it, if capable, will grow a beard. Goliaths/Half-Giants (which is what Grog is) don't grow a lot of hair, as you mentioned. In game, Travis made a roll every in-game day to see if the beard would grow in. It started out akin to fishing line, but eventually grew in as a proper and lush beard. And Travis was a happy player. There was also a prank pulled by Vax, where he shaved off half of Grog's new beard. It was both hilarious and heartbreaking. Also, Travis was so pissed that he literally bent the mechanical pencil he was holding in half.

The fun thing is that when Scanlan noticed that the door to the tomb pulled open, that means that the pressure/weight of the water keeps the door from opening which prevents the tomb from being flooded.

If you remember, the relaesed the series in blocks of 3. Yeah, people had to wait a whole week to watch the next episode. Of course, those who has information about the campaign, knew this would happen just looking at the title. As this moment is as remembered as the sun tree moment. As other has asked, watch the campaign moment, focus on Matt face(the game master), which tell a history all by itself.

11:50 As others have said it was an area of effect and the dice just didn't roll high enough for Vex to dodge it. But they could have showed in much better in the animation for it to make sense; like how was Percy any more aware there was something happening when he wasnt looking at it? But if he saw those runes light up he would have reacted faster than Vex who was looking away thinking of her brother. And then the reason she died is she was low enough on health points to be brought to zero, they could have shown her with some kind of injury from the fish people fight, or coughing from being held in the water too long.

I realize this comment is really late lol, but something I haven’t seen any comment mention is Percy and Keyleth’s exchange when Scanlan falls through the ice. When he tells her to “be a bird or something” and she responds with “how would that help?” Those lines are actually hilarious because they are a subtle reference to something Marisha (Keyleth) does in the campaign that is simultaneously one of the most iconic, dumbest, and funniest moments in the entire campaign. Not to give spoilers to the actual moment because I am so so hoping they animate it, but let’s just say Keyleth jumps off a cliff and it doesn’t go how you think. It’s always nice to catch little references like that😂

The characters' response to Purvan's name matches the actors' during the stream. The Belt of Dwarvenkind imbues bonuses that are good for warrior types, provides a *chance* for the wearer to grow a beard (regardless of gender), and allows the wearer to read Dwarven... but Grog can't read, so. One time, Vax took Grog out drinking, then shaved off *half* the beard as he slept. When Grog woke in the morning, he tried smearing charcoal across the bare side of his face to even it out. Touching the armour released a wave of death energy. Taliesin rolled high enough to avoid it, but Laura rolled a natural one, and the damage took Vex below 0hp. Instakill. You should look up TP Burrow's video of the moment it happened in the stream, for their reaction.

What you need to remember about this story is that it was not written with an outline and a planned ending. It is based on a D&D game, and in D&D one bad role can cost a PC (Player Character) their life. Laura rolled badly at a bad moment, when the price of failure was instant death for Vex. No main character had plot protection, because there was always that chaotic element of the dice roll when they played out this legend. Also Season 3 of Vox was greenlit before season 2 dropped, and they have said they hope to tell the full story of Vox Machina over 5 seasons. Amazon just jumped on more content from Critical Role, a multi year contract giving Prime first look at any shows or movies Critical Role is interested in producing. Personally I am so happy about the Mighty Nein, that is my Fav Campaign to date! That group is just made to be animated.

I mean the temple of the Goddess of Death just MIGHT have some extra deadly traps. They were not being cautious enough for their surroundings. It’s crazy to think how many things would have changed if Percy had never found sprung this trap. There’s no plot armour in dnd, but Critical Role does a good job of making every death matter.

Don't worry, Season 3's been greenlit! The nice thing about animation, is that voice recording doesn't take much time: They can totally record both series simultaneously. If there's any delay, it'll be due to the writer's strike. I don't know if they've been doing their own writing, since it's mostly paring down hundreds of hours of original dialogue.
@OptionZero

There’s easily enough material for 5 seasons of Vox Machina; the origin campaign was 100 episodes. Mighty Nein was even longer, something like 140 episodes. The benefit of these adaptations from Amazon’s perspective is the sheer quantity of content that’s got handy dandy voice talent already to adapt their own stuff for tv. The way they’ve talked about animation behind expensive and time consuming, it seems hard to envision two series being produced at the same time. Maybe their Amazon deal has enough $ to do it, but I wouldn’t be surprised or disappointed if M9 doesn’t hit for several years. They got plenty to do in the meantime
