I absolutely agree that icky things like spiders suddenly become interesting. I just got the 105mm Nikon Z macro lens, and I'm blown away. It's my first macro lens and it arrived just in time as all the tiny mushrooms are starting to pop up here in northern Finland. Great video!

You're so right, Kim - macro photography opens up a whole new world, and I really have to do more of it again. Our world around us is so fascinating, with whole ecosystems existing in a single raindrop on a leaf. Just amazing.

Macro photography is fantastic. You really have to work for what you get as well, especially with wind being present. But it is a type of photography I don't see myself ever getting tired of. Good stuff, Kim!

Great to see this video Kim, hopefully you have another video on macro. I do some macro, but don't have that kind of equipment. It is amazing to see nature's smaller creations. The shots you took are amazing, I'll get out and see what macro shots I can take. thanks Kim, stay well.

So interesting Kim & such fab macro shots. And as you say we all steer clear of some of these little beasties, ( I seem to have a fly that has now seemed to settle in my flat & find myself trying to swat him toward my windows but am never quick enough ) the positive from this is i should get my camera out and capture him :) Love that you've now given me a different perspective. I'm pleased you had such an enjoyable time out & about using the macro lens, its a very nice bit of kit for sure :) x

Hi Kim! As I think I've mentioned before, macro photography is one of my favourite genres. I love it! Just today, I spent at least half an hour just sat photographing the same flower to see how many different insects landed on that same flower! In normal circumstances you just wouldn't do that, but actually I found it quite therapeutic! The nice thing about Macro photography is that you don't have to cover a huge area. As you pointed out, just one patch of nettles can yield a whole plethora of different subjects to photograph! It's also funny that you mentioned the things in nature that we would normally despise or be afraid of. Before I started doing macro photograph I was absolutely terrified of bees and wasps! Well.. not any more!

Macro is a godsend when in lockdown as we can’t get out. I stumbled on focus stacking within the Z7 and it is fun to use that in macro. The 50mm looks a good option. Love your photos

Hi Kim, a few technical aspects that I have come to know about macro photography: shots work best if the subject is parallel to the lens; or, photographed from the top: reason being the shallow DOF of macro photography lenses; that way your image will all be in focus. Secondly, having a lens with a longer focal point (e.g. 60, 90, 100) is often more useful in order to get more distance between the lens and subject, thereby not obscuring your natural light with the lens. Thirdly, use manual focus, the camera's flash light (with TTL), and a simple diffuser, all make macro photography results very satisfying. Cheers

Been looking around at macro lenses to, looks good but not sure if it would fit my camera. Love the video to. took me away from it all to just watching it. Thanks.

Really liked the last shot. It really showed the hairs on the bee. The only problem with a short lens , when shooting bugs, is you have to get so close that you may spook the bug..

To me macro lenses with 55 and 105 mm are the general purpose choice from down to very close up to infinity; so I name them 'macro-universals' and I'm accustomed to using them both. Under risky conditions a 200 mm macrophoto lens will do the better job. Do you know the Nikon AF Micro 70-180mm f4.5-5.6 D ED macro zoom lens: particularly pleasing because of its flexibility in mixing distance to object and adjusting display and zoom.

Thanks Kim, love the one with the raindrops and the last one of the bee on the thistle. Do you use the viewfinder at all? I do because I find it avoids camera shake by keeping my arms against my torso and can see details of whatever I am working on.

Nice shots Kim. Yes macro is fun and some unique images can be made. I recently shot a dead fly I found. I posed it and shot multiple focus stacked images. Blended them all together and pow. A zombie fly lol. Its a great thing to try and very rewarding when it's done good. Also I had to giggle at the tiny lens you have. Nope for me that's a beast! It's easily double the size of my 50mm. Great video as always. See you next time.

I think the best shot was of the bee at the end of your video. I've also done some macro shots with my 70-200m, F2.8 and my 100-400mm F5-6.3, but I do see the appeal of dedicated macro lenses.

I bought a macro lens a few years ago, but ended up selling it. I found the minute depth of field very frustrating, and didn't want to get into focus stacking, which wouldn't have worked anyway with insects that move so quickly, and without using a tripod. Which is why a lot of professionals will take pictures of insects they have killed.
