At the weekend a number of French regions voted in for new regional governments. That wouldn't normally be a big topic, but with French national elections on the horizon, many are looking to these votes for an indication of things to come. So in this video we explain the system, the results and what a loss means for both Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen

You completely forgot to talk about the left-wing parties, despite the fact that they were first in 5 of the 13 metropolitan regions, and they had a cumulated more than 20% of the votes, with the socialist party (who was widely conseidered as dead because of an awful result in the last presidential election) scoring more than 15% of the votes. And there were even some left-wing coalitions, which is an exceptionally rare thing in French elections. I think you could not cover a British election and not talk about the labour party's results. That's pretty much the same except you forgot all of the left wing parties.

This post doesn’t stand even a cursory fact-checking. In 2015, the turnout had been at 58,41%. In 2017, presidential elections and MPs election had respectively a turnout of 77.77% and 48,70%. In 2014, european elections had a turnout of 42,43%. Department in 2015 had a turnout of 50,17%. In 2014, municipalities had a turnout of 63,55%. Not only has turnout been divided by nearly 2 at this election but it’s on the third most popular election in the country, after city councils and the présidential elections.

@@hugosetiawan8928 There’s obviously a correlation between how impactful an election is and its turnout, even if there still is importance to the vote. In unitary states with less devolved powers most people don’t know their local politicians so voting just wouldn’t matter as much, if you need an example compare Dutch local elections in 2019 with German ones in the same year. It’s telling that in the Netherlands, where even during covid they had a higher nationwide election turnout than Germany in a normal year, they still have 20% less turnout in local elections.

Everbody's right! The department and regional governments may do important things, but a lot of French people have little visibility or interest for it. Nonetheless, up til now there was a strong sense of civic duty that led many people to go vote in these elections whether they thought they had a personal stake in it or not. So this dramatic falloff is very disturbing because it seems that sense of civic duty and the faith in the system that goes with it are being lost...especially in the younger voters.

Why english commentators always translate “rassemblement national” with “national rally”, but never translate “République en march!” With something like “let’s go republic!” Or “go republic!”? This last one makes Macron looks like a Pokémon trainer: “republic, I choose you!”😂

Ah great, I'm French and I was waiting for this video to do my analysis. First of all, we have to note the record abstention: almost 70%, never seen in France under the fifth republic except for referendums. The covid-19 and the restrictions are not really responsible, last year, during the municipal elections, there was less abstention while the situation was more complicated. Even more worrying is that 82% of 18-25 year olds did not go to vote, almost half of them did not know that there was an election. This high abstention rate can be explained in different ways: -Firstly, the total incompetence of the government in organising the election. These elections were first scheduled for March, but postponed to 13 and 20 June, and then finally to 20 and 27 June to ensure that as many people as possible were vaccinated before the vote. For a while, it was even planned to postpone these elections beyond the 2022 presidential elections with the excuse of Covid (in reality everyone knew very well that if these elections were postponed to such a period it would only be to hide an unprecedented electoral disaster for LREM). This incompetence is also reflected in the non-receipt of the candidates' professions of faith by the voters, due in part to the fact that the government has mandated a private company for this and not "French postal service", a public company. -The second reason is the complexity of the territorial divisions in France and the different voting systems. Indeed, we do not only elect regional councillors, but also departmental councillors, who are in charge of the administration of the departments, a subdivision of the regions that do not have the same competences. In Germany, for example, the subdivision is simple (Federation, Länder, Communes), but in France, between the communes, the syndicates of communes, the communities of agglomerations, the community councils, the departments, the communities with special status, the regions, the cantons... in short, everyone gets lost quite easily, added to the fact that the territorial delimitations often change just like the competences of the various parties -third reason, and in my opinion the main one, a total rejection of politics.Because in France politics is a mafia: betrayal, corruption, lies, broken promises, parties that change their programme and political orientation at each election... And no party is spared, even those claiming to be populist and anti-elite (e.g. Marine Le Pen who embezzles €6.5M from the European Parliament thanks to a system of fictitious jobs to pay off her party's debt). (sorry for the sorry for the translation errors, I made this comment on Google Translate for go faster)

I mean, the fact that 80%+ (I even read up to 87%) of young people didn't voted should be a cause for alarm. These are numbers you are likely to see in authoritarian regimes where the people don't give the political class any legitimacy. Reminder young people in France are way likelier than in the rest of the West to vote far-right. Today, people who don't believe in the system simply decided to stay home on election day. Tomorrow, we might see another wave of Yellow Vest-style riots.

I would add that a lot of French doesn’t care about this elections as the responsibilities of the region are very limited (transportations and lycées (the school between ~14/15yo and 17/18yo before university). Moreover the advertising around this election was very low and except papers in our mailboxes and a debate on tv that nobody watched, we had no information about the candidates. Then a third point that can be important is that at the same time we had the departmental elections in which people usually votes for people they know like their mayors or the people already in place. Thus we were more encline to vote for the same party in the two elections and in local elections old parties (LR and PS) have better scores.

As a French, I feel like a part of the election has been left on the side here. Another party that has a very good evening on Sunday was the center left Europe Écologie party. It was still a very small party ten years ago, and has now managed to place itself second to first on most regions. The second turn might see the emergence of a left-wing coalition, if the Front Républicain fails to form. And it might also push other left-wing parties, like Le Parti Socialiste and La France Insoumise, to abandon the presidential race to ally themselves with Europe Écologie. I'm kind of having mixed feelings on turnout being so low in the French elections : On the one hand, even while being a political activist IRL, I understand why people are skipping the polls : pandemic, mistrust in policy makers (which is its own subject), poor knowledge of what the city/department/region does... On the other hand, since I'm hearing about the voter suppression going on in the states, or other election tampering going on in other countries, and knowing that people died for the right to vote to exist, it also comes off as spoiled and ungrateful, in a way. I also think the French election system needs some fixing. Regarding the elections in Hauts-de-France and PACA: Xavier Bertrand will win reelection (unless he screws up real bad), and so will Renaud Muselier.

Pronounced 'hote de France'. Definitely apathy. The weather hasn't been that good over the weekend. I don't think Le Pen will do any better in 22 than she did in 17. Macron is unpopular because he has tried to introduce change, and French people don't like change, even if it is necessary. Also, despite doing well with COVID measures compared to UK and other European countries, ironically the vaccine roll out hasn't had good optics. He is damned both ways, either by those who wanted the shot earlier or those who are sceptics and feel (although not true) rail roaded. When you look at the fact that Macron, even now, is more popular than both his predecessors ever were, already gives him a better chance at winning I think. Then there is the fact that I would simply be surprised if Lepen ever won. It's not her first time running for president and every time she did she lost by quite the margin in the finals. I think this time might be a little closer but I don't think she will win
@TheLokiel
@TheLokiel 2 жыл бұрын
Macron popularity polls are a lot more difficult to interpret than this. He has spent pretty much all his mandate being just a bit more popular than Hollande and significantly less than Sarkozy. He has climbed back during COVID but this is just a case of rallying around the chef during a crisis. It can go away quite easily once the crisis is passed. Furthermore polls seem to show that while Macron is significantly more popular than Hollande was in his voter base, he is also a lot more hated outside of it, akin to Sarkozy if not worse. Which means that he will have a lot of trouble in the second turn of the presidential election to gather support. In fact today left wing voters would rather vote for someone like Xavier Bertrand than for Macron. Lastly, the popularity of Macron is also very reliant on categories of the population that have poor electoral turnout so there is no guarantee he will get them turned into votes.

Good video. I would like to add a couple things: - LR (Les Républicains) is a completely right wing party, not a center-right one - that would be LREM. The LR party has strong anti-immigration stances, supports hard neoliberal ideas, and are actively against minority rights - to say the least. - according to polls, the low turnout is not so much explained by the pandemic or the weather but by multiple other reasons: people don't believe these elections can better/change their daily life; people don't trust/agree with any of the candidates; people weren't informed of the elections - they didn't know it was on Sunday or they didn't register before the deadline for example.

Ya erm, the only reason why EU is becoming irrelevant in geopolitics is because you have to cater to 27 different countries' differing geopolitical foreign policy views. For example, all it took was for corrupt Orban to stop the EU from putting out a statement criticizing China. If anything, Brexit has shown that it has allowed Britain to come down even harder on China without giving a shit about Orban's or Merkel's pro-China views, so much so that they are now sending their newest aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth to the South China Sea with ease. Disclaimer; I used to a be Remainer for Brexit, but now I see the benefits of having more sovereignty from the cumbersome EU. So yea, if either France or Germany wants to be relevant in geopolitics in the future, they need to let go of the baggage of being in the EU.

Weird. Here in Germany we're only really happy with middle-of-the-road politicians and policies and parties and coalitions, but it seems like our neighbours in France would only ever be happy if whoever won the last election hadn't.

Anyone who watched the last presidential debate would say the opposite. She's only famous because of her name, not because of her competences. She inherited the party from daddy and kept some popularity thanks to a few slogans, but when she has to defend her policies even her closest supporters say it's a disaster, she does not work enough to understand policies. Though in order to know this, you must speak French and understand French politics.

She is controlled and financed by Russia and the Arab Emirates. So no, she deserves jailtime especially with the massive frauds and threats from her party.

I live in France and I am shocked at how apathetic and uninterested some people, that I know here, are about their democratic rights or voting. It's a huge shame/problem.
