@@maxvandenberg955 Well, try to get the french and flemmish speaking around a table and you'll start to notice the issue. It's not simply that these two communities have different languages, ways of thinking but even morality has differences. It's a bit as if the netherlands and france had the same government deciding of the same policies, this wouldn't end well as you wouldn't understand eachothers language, way of thinking, way of perceiving the world... if you cannot even agree about what is going on how could you agree on what is the problem and how to agree what is the solution ? Once this first problem has been considered take into account 'communautarism', basically us against them, the french speaking who only understand french (because reasons) only get french speaking news and information about what happens on the flemmish speaking side and vice versa (I'm from the frontier region so I understand both regions), tribalism pushes these two communities against one another. Sorry for the long answer but to summarize those two issues: tribalism and two different worlds

The 'senate', which is supposed to be this neutral reflecting body looking at if laws are executable or lawful, has become a politicised puppet party politics while because of coinciding provincial elections actual provincial representation gets completely overshadowed by national political struggles in the senate. The fact that we're even talking about 'we need a majority in the senate' shows ths failure of the very institute itself.

Tbf to Hoekstra, he was put in as #1 candidate at the last second as originally someone else was supposed to be the CDA's candidate for the elections but he dropped out late due being Health minister(covid) as he underestimated the combined workload. So an unprepared hoekstra who originally rejected the #1 CDA position for election to focus on his task as minister, was pushed to the front once again + lack of cohesion in the party. @@thepax6390 It's a lot of internal party-politics that decide who gets a place at the table. Hoekstra has long been a powerful CDA-figure, allowing him to claim the role as Finance Minister.

@@thepax6390 in a post i made earlier i explained that hoekstra was not involved in the campaign for the elections until the dropout of the CDA's original candidate. Hoekstra had no involvement in the creation of the party's program for the elections and the direction of the campaign and was basically handed down a prewritten program as the program was set in stone at the point the original candidate backed down. Its much harder to make a program your own if you didnt participate in the creation of it. The only thing that u can blame him is that he shouldve prepared it better, which considering his experience was no easy task

Maybe, their inexperience might be problematic for them yet they can also make a very strong early name for themselves like this. Furthermore, some voters might not like them passing on the opportunity of throwing some weight around early. I for one am in that camp and would like to see them bring some extra pro European voices in the coalition. They might lose me and others to D66 or Green left otherwise.

@@Lordblow1 Although having a bit of extra power (coalition wise) might do them good, being so small in the coalition also means they barely have leverage over the other coalition parties. To make compomises, it might mean losing more power than they will gain... I think they should offer, but also be quick to decline. A coalition isn't worth losing all ideals for.

You missed out on the fact that most of these coalitions only have enough support in the Tweede Kamer, not in the Eerste Kamer.

VVD D66 PVDA and GL will have a majority in the Senate ( Eerste kamer) but JA 21 does aswell which Rutte recently hinted at he didnt want to rule them out (yet)

The current cabinet doesn't have a majority there either. It's nice to have a majority in both chambers of parliament, but it is entirely possible to find First Chamber allies on a case-by-case basis.

@@royblekman8186 All ballots have been counted, the final result will be called by the electoral council (Kiesraad) on March 26th and published in the Staatscourant, the states newspaper (wherein all new laws and new regulations of the governments are published). The time until then will be used to control, investigate and maybe recount of certain polling stations, when there are irregularities established by the electoral council.

He immediately answered: Never. He will not join a coalition without dropping that, and he is unwilling to do so. He seems perfectly fine staying in the opposition though, as he isn't the type to plan ahead or negotiate, but likes to kick 'em in the knees a bit.

It's true that proportional representation is more work for politicians, but it gives a relatively proportional voice to every point of view, acknowledging that not everything is black and white and avoiding the political extremism that happens in the US for example. ​@@bunceman4613 Maybe, but would they be able to get a majority coalition? A large party doesn't necessarily mean being able to work together (like the PVV in the netherlands). I am not that well versed in politics outside of the netherlands (very centre) and US (very binary), so I don't know for sure, but an extreme party wouldn't do that well in proportional systems. I have serisous doubts that the centre-right (like romney-esqe) would rather work with the far right than with the centre-left. I think the US it too polarized for real cooperation for a propotianal system, but I wouldn't think extremists (either left or right) do well in such a system (but I only follow the Netherlands as an example).

It's actually a very good result. For years the animal party had the same number of seats each election. It was a steady, very small party just like SGP (fundamentalist Christian party). And now they seem to have shaken that off, and they're growing.

No party really disagrees with that. We'd like to dismantle birocratic hurds and avoid brain drains. We'd like to deal with refugees in an humane way. We are all humans. All worth the same. Some just were lucky to be born in the right place. People who discriminate against refugees in Europe often say, that we should help these people in their home countries. Nobody who welcomes refugees disagrees with that, but that doesn't help the refugees that are already in Greece for example and can not go home because of war. We'd like to evacuate inhumane refugee camps in South-East of Europe and support rescue at sea. The current policy of making living conditions bad for refugees in Europe does not stop people from coming here, we have scientific proof of that. We need to value human rights.

@@studiognoe i know, here in Germany, we may get an article on the "Tageschau" (Our state run media platform for general political news) and maybe one or two articals on private news outlets, which all have about 3 min reading time and just generally cover the party, the election and what the future awaits. They don't cover the election up front, they don't talk about the country a few months after the election and they just talk about the main government parties, but not the smaller ones and the special sides of individual politics(like the many Dutch parties). However, we get weekly articles about the US and what is happening there, it's is really annoying not being able to know what is happening in other European countries

It’s one of those things that sounds good on the surface but upon deeper reflection proportional rep has far too many issues. No system is without its issues, but i much prefer the uk parliament setup. It is far more stable, doesn’t require constant bargaining between parties which reality shows us can often take the best part of an election cycle and most of all - because of all the endless negotiations between parties, proportional representation systems are really run by their state bureaucracy which is likely for the best since their politicians are busy with the endless task of coalition building. There are some parts of proportional rep I think are better - for instance it does give smaller/fringe parties a better chance and though they are likely smaller/fringe parties for a good reason it does give those voters a better chance of getting a seat in parliament but the costs, of which I listed some above, are just too high. Smaller parties can still win seats in uk system plus in our system, councils have a huge impact on people’s daily lives which is often ignored in the discussion. In my 20’s and into 30’s I like prop rep but I’ve changed my mind over the last 10 years, after living in 7 different western democracies I actually think the uk system runs better than the other options I’ve lived in. Different isn’t always better, I’m not saying The Netherlands system doesn’t necessarily work for them, if a majority are happy with it that’s all that matters.

what now, rutte survived a vote of no confidence baraly 72/76 necessary votes, but parlement did accept a lesser version (in dutch a motie van afkeuring) which was supported by almost everybody including d66 and cda his own current coalition, this just got even more intressting

You mention the child benefit scandal "may have led to...." It did. People were incorrectly flagged as fraudsters by the tax office with some going tens to hundreds of thousands of euros into debt. Leading to divorces, lost custody of children and a suicide. Some even discriminated on the basis of their name sounding foreign. The fact VVD has gained a seat has left a lot in anger or disbelief.

Some corrections aside from the ones you mentioned... - The info you have is a bit outdated, the VVD only rose 1 seat and D66 gained 5. (but this is pretty recent info) - 8:42 Geert Wilders showing he's part of D66, even though he is the leader of the PVV - Several times Volt is shown centre right, even though they're actually centre left. (I think this is a mistake that started on wikipedia, where it has already been corrected)

Tbf, it's incredibly hard to place Volt on a one-dimensional left-right scheme.

Yeah, but to be honest, the formation puzzle isn't quite as complex as they're putting it here. Based on pure numbers they are correct, but the internal culture within parties also plays a role. Both D66 and the CDA are weathered coalition partners (since 1977, every government has contained at least one of those two parties), and both of them are acutely aware that their voters expect them to enter government if they're given a reasonable chance. Yes, the CDA may have lost seats this time, but I still see them being part of the next cabinet.

I like all this, political parties having to work together for the benefit of the country. Unlike here in the UK a political party can win less than half the votes and run the entire country and claim to speak for the majority

I'm suspicious of those who call for PR and the like here in the UK, since they went silent when it was UKIP who would have benefited the most. Now they had to scoop up those brexiteers in order to not split the vote and give power to the left. Which results in part of the Ukip policy becoming Conservative policy, effectively giving Ukip power anyway. I am not sure if RP is the best system for a governent (see for example the previous dutch system with the loaning-system for students while having minority support (basically only VVD)), but I think that it keeps somewhat extreme ideas out of major parties and does make a great opposition.

But if the UK system of politics was to be reformed then things like a reformed media is also just as badly needed to ensure a fact driven debate is allowed to air. I also find the two main parties deeply flawed and lacking enough definition in their policies and why they believe it.

The problem with Volt is that they consist of political newcomers who have great ideals but no experience at all. They have clearly stated that they aren't ready to be part of a cabinet yet. That said, I've seen more unlikely things happen in the past.

That could play in favor of that last coalition mentioned, as they could ask for less consecions and be just compromise to give external support to government in mayor issues (that would give Volt more freedom, as it would not be fully tied to the government)

Absolutely, but I think they could definitely be convinced. Their ideological closeness to D66 means that if the next government's policies come out looking good for D66, they'll make Volt look good too, so it's unlikely they'll pay a price at the next elections for having gone into government, and as you said, they are a party of ideals, so if D66 comes knocking and tells them that they need Volt to make the next government a properly progressive one, I think they'll be receptive to that. Of course they don't have any immediate minister material on their party list, but I'm sure they could find a few technocrats who are sympathetic to Volt's ideas who could be their ministers, and with Volt's size, it'd be unlikely for them to send more than one minister and one or two state secretaries to the next government anyway.

In italy when the government fail and we had too much close elections, we usually create a technical government with some experts usually chosen by the president. They explain to me that sadly for Spain 🇪🇸 every time the government fail they have an election, and never an emergency government.

A very important issue that is not mentioned in this video is that a coalition would also need a majority in the Senate to be effective in any way. So a coalition with Volt is for that reason very unlikely to happen as are some other combinations mentioned in this video

Coalitions also have to take the composition of the Eerste Kamer into consideration and not only the Tweede Kamer, as having a majroty in both chambers makes pushing through one's agenda a lot easier.

I don't think it would be a godsend for D66. They want more leftist orientated parties to join in if only for more climate change. I think they're going to try to get Groen Links to be the 4th if D66/VVD/CDA will be the core. But before that even happens we'll have to see what D66 and CDA will do.

Volt is a much easier companion they'll accept any economic policy. For d66 it is a godsend because they have have friendly party in coalition with them (even better, the coalition depends on Volt) :they avoid a repeat of PVDA after the purple coalition. Plus they dont have a competing party outside of coalition that can criticize every unpopular thing D66 does

That isn't necessarily true. Killing a party doesn't eliminate its followers. Assuming you also eleminate Fvd and JA21 (as those would just aborb them), those followers would walk to VVD and turn that party more right (and VVD already has a large following). Having those followers stored in a specific party allows other parties to exclude them in coalition (instead of them being part of the biggest party). To make it clear: I agree that the points of the PVV are abhorent, but eleminating the party doesn't solve the underlying problem (of people agreeing with them).
