I like seeing the maintenance. Made me think. Considering the many crew it takes to just launch a conventional aircraft off an in-atmosphere carrier, each mecha would need dozens of dedicated crew members to maintain them.

This is something that I only began to understand when I bought at 1:48 kit version for the VF-1A from Hasegawa. Now that I see how small the ground crew and pilots are in the video its apparent these fighters are around the size of a F15 tiny compared to the VF-21's in Macross Plus or even the beautiful VF-25 Messiah units in Macross Frontier.

I was looking for someone to bring this up. The world was a different place back in the 80s especially when it came to internation niche entertainment. The mech designs for battletech and Macross (the original japanese name) were designed and purchased from a third party. The fact these companies didn't produce what is basically the core of their IPs in house is baffling by todays standards. The company that sold the concepts made out like a bandit though since they sold the same thing twice. In an analogue world it was probably years before someone notice. Most people have heard how harmony gold (the american company that licensed the show) sued the shit out of battletech. Edit: Dammit I almost forgot transformers also bought the rights to the valkyrie (jetfire) design for it's toy line but learned about the controversy before the television episode was made and changed the character's head.

@@innocuousalias6632 It wasn't a third party it was the original Mech designer that's why they got macross and a few other anime's mechs. The bad thing is Harmony Gold never had any part of the rights other than distributing the show nor were they connected to some of the other shows at all but they still used those mechs when they sued as part of their case and should have lost the case as FASA had actually gotten the rights from one of the rights co holders.

I'm wondering if there's a faster deployment method for the fighters. Waiting for that hook arm to grab, swing out and drop is kind of slow. Of the SF and anime I've seen, I think Babylon 5 has the fastest fighter deployment mainly because the Starfuries are thrown out by the station rotation.

Macorss tends to do more of modern aircraft carrier styled launches, with the aircraft doing pre checks, as they wait for clearance to launch by the crew. And I mean it is cool so I don't see it as something bad.

I always thought the full armour is reserved for higher ranked officers, so having it on a VF-1A, although cool looking, is rather surprising. Also the VF-1D is supposed to be a trainer, not sure if it should sortie with the rest if they were preparing for real enemy action.

If you're desperate you'd probably throw out anything you could regardless of rank. The SDF was basically "flying" on empty when it finally reached Earth in the original anime. I can imagine at the time the crew wouldn't be too picky about who got what and when.

If you need all hands on deck, anything can be equipped with weapons. Look at Ukraine they took retired museum fighters out to war.
