I was born in 1978. I took Spanish all though high school and college! We sang Eres Tu in all of my Spanish classes in high school and college! The melody is beautiful! Nana Mouskouri does a beautiful job and so do the backup singers! I love both the English and the original Spanish lyrics. The English lyrics tell a completely different story and meaning than the original Spanish lyrics! Thank you for posting and sharing this classic performance! I love it!

The "backup singers" are in fact The Kings' Singers, a well-known a capella group, with whom Nana has done several tracks; look out "The Three Bells" ("Jimmy Brown") by Nana and them.

This is my all time favorite song, Done by one of my favorite singers. GREAT job Nana. As much as I love her music, I suspect English isnt her first/primary language. From what Ive heard her sing in Spanish, I bet she could blow the roof off w/ this done in Spanish. Cheers

Her first language is Greek, but she is fluent in English, French, German, ... about six (and sings in 16 to 20, certainly including Spanish). She had her own show on the BBC - though always has an accent!

I love the Mocedades original with all my heart it is one of my favourite songs but Nana as she always did took a song and adapted it to make her own - both versions are stunning
@G6JPG10 ай бұрын
While I agree Nana is always wonderful, I don't think _she_ does the adaptations - though of course she chooses very well those who do. From other comments, it would appear that Mocedades themselves created this English version (not a translation). (Nana would still have had someone _arrange_ it for her, of course.)
@davidhibling10 ай бұрын
@@G6JPG Agreed ! Nana always surrounded herself with great musicians, producers, sound engineers, translators/adaptors especially Pierre Delanoe in France,. But for all the collaboration it is finally her voice that makes the finished product. Yes I believe Mocedades did the original English version and yes not a direct translation. I have always loved this song both the Spanish and English versions. Nana never recorded the song only sang it 'live' but loved her for singing it and loved Mocedades singing it too - great memories!

I would dare to say that the tune of the song "Eres Tu" was derived from the tune of "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Elvis Presley in the movie "Blue Hawaii" in the same manner as "Chopsticks" was derived from the Hungarian Rhapsody Op. 2 by Franz Liszt. Note the similarity of the tune in "Cant' Help Falling in Love" (verse) and the "Eres Tu" (chorus).
@kumasenlac55049 жыл бұрын
+Richard McLaughlin 'Can't Help Following in Love' is generally accepted as a modification of the French chanson 'Plaisir D'Amour'. The more notable similarity is that between the quality of tone of Nana Mouskouri (who did a killer version of 'Plaisir D'Amour') and Amaya Uranga who underpinned 'Eres Tu'.
@ChimeraAZ8 жыл бұрын
Eres Tu doesnt sound like Cant Help Falling in Love to me at all.
@richfolkes8 жыл бұрын
If you can understand musical notation, please listen carefully to the first two bars of the verse of "Can't Help Falling in Love ", then the first two bars of the chorus of "Eres Tu", you'll notice the similarity. The similarity ends in the next two bars of the verse and chorus of the two songs respectively.
@G6JPG10 ай бұрын
Yes, I heard that similarity for a bar or two - thanks for reminding me what the other tune was. Though I wouldn't say enough of it is similar to say it's derived from that.

I prefer the Spanish version also. There's also a fine line between "vibrato" and "bleating like a goat".
@pbot195915 жыл бұрын
Mocedades, the group that introduced this song, recorded this English version long before Nana did this performance. True, these English lyrics have nothing to do with the Spanish version, but think of it as an adaptation.

What is the point of getting not translated but adapted other (very different) lyrics than original to a song?
@G6JPG10 ай бұрын
Fitting words to a tune is difficult. Sometimes, a translation fits well - but sometimes it doesn't, however hard you try. There is nothing wrong with putting different words to a tune - it has been done for centuries! Look at several hymn tunes (those also often have two or more tunes to the same words!), and Beethoven's ninth, for example.

A very different song in English.
@arizonapatriotforus13 жыл бұрын
The lyrics ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT LOST ALL ITS MEANING!
@G6JPG10 ай бұрын
Not lost - just different. Someone who gets to know the English song might have exactly the same reaction if they heard the Spanish one! One of Nana's first hits - Ta Pedia Tou Pirea - in the original Greek, is a prostitute singing about how she likes the lads of Pirea (a Greek port); its English version, Never on a Sunday, is completely different! And in German, it was at first translated from the English (Nie am Sontag), then completely different words (a ship will come). [Which became a hit for Lale Andersen, best known for Lili Marleen!] Nana - and Mireille - sing lots of songs in multiple languages; sometimes the words are a translation, sometimes they're a completely different story.

Great song and singing, but a song that has nothing to do with the spanish lyrics is a no, no! I'm sure something could've been done to relate it more to the original lyrics. I doubt Juan Carlos Calderon (the composer) had anything to do with these lyrics.
@G6JPG10 ай бұрын
(Did he compose the Spanish words as well as the music?) Doesn't matter - lots of songs (by lots of people) are completely different in other languages. There is skill in getting words to fit a tune, whether they are a translation or something completely different. (I don't know who wrote the English words, but there are websites dedicated to that sort of thing, often with lyric in the host name.) [Later: apparently Mocedades themselves created this English version.]
