You called it. This switch is perfect for locations that just need a few more ports without POE. The limitations this device has are super low if you UNDERSTAND the target install. No SNMP, No Pro audio, and No L3 are fine.. The price still gives you a 5 port POE powered 2.5G managed switch. As soon as I got the email I brought one to add to a location with my PS5, Xbox, and TV location. This will allow me to run all three device at the maximum needed speeds.

I just picked one up. My challenge has always been how to get 2.5G from my basement hard drive based NAS to my home office. I’ve got a Lite 8 PoE switch upstairs, but I couldn’t justify the expense of an Enterprise 8 PoE or a Flex 10 GbE switch just to connect to my Mac Studio. Running another Ethernet line was my last resort, but thankfully, this solution has saved the day! $49? PERFECT.

Obviously yes, but you can still manage it even if your router is not ubiquiti. I run opensense as my router and manage AP-s and Switches no problem

Very likely, that's a feature that they're not gonna give for cheap I'm afraid, even if it costs probably nothing. It should say 802.1Q on the product page if it supported it. I learned that the hard way myself with the flex mini.

What I’ve read is that it’ll be the same as the flex-mini with single VLAN or all VLANs. For this price point it makes sense. This is more prosumer device that is really just there to add drops in a home office or entertainment center. They have to justify more expensive devices some how 😉

He did demonstrate that aggregation (trunking) was not available. The option was there on a pull-down, but greyed out. I do wonder if the option becomes available if you limit the 2 you want to aggregate/trunk if you change the port speed to 1G or slower. This would be nice for a device with 2 1G ports, like a NAS, maybe?

Without that I would need to connect one link from my Enterprise 24 directly to PC, and the 2nd to this Mini 2.5g and then mini->PC (and rest of the ports for other stuff I have in my "home office room"). I wonder if they have trouble on the manufacturing side of the house. They almost always run out of stock immediately for weeks sometimes months. A restock will often be short lived as well.

Looking at it again, my flex mini says "Tagged VLAN Management is limited on this device" and Custom is grayed out. Whereas in this clip it does not have that message. Therefore I assume it does not have same limitations.

Mine connected to the 2.5 8poe enterprise shows uplink as 2.5 which is a pleasant surprise though its speced as gigabit ... not sure what to make of it

None of the uses you mentioned (TV/entertainment/gameconsoles) need 2.5G connections. Very many people will be ok with the 1G connection of the regular Flex Mini, and investing in 2.5G is paying for an unnecessary premium feature.

You're not wrong, but for 50 bucks the value proposition is huge given the flexibility we'll have for devices that would require it (PCs, storage, etc...).

None of those devices do more than 1gbps, but collectively they could use more than 1gbps if say your PS5 is downloading a game (I have 1gbps internet so often times I can max out at 100MB/s+ downloading games) while simultaneously streaming a UHD to my tv. That means that those two devices would have to share a 1gbps upload back to my main switch if I didn’t have a 2.5gbps switch. Do I have this scenario a lot, no. But it does happen. It’s very common for us to start a download of a new game and switch over to our Nvidia Shield to watch something in 4K rather than just stare mindlessly at the download progress bar. Not to mention all the random updates to our game consoles,streaming devices, windows updates, etc that all happen at random times when idle.

@@-tsvk- this lack of understanding of uplink speeds is why Unifi continues to sell 48port switches with only SFP ports. Great, no device on your switch has more than a 1bps port, but collectively they can max out that uplink port very quickly….. and no link aggregation is no substitute for a 10gbps uplink (or in this case a 2.5gbps uplink). Uplink speed is more important to a switch than the “downlink” ports.

Nice, what they dont say in the specs is the ports are 100/1000/2.5g they dont go down to 10. Doesn't sound like a problem in 2024 but some IoT devices only connect at 10mbps. I have to use an original Flex mini at home to get 3 of my IoT hubs working as they will not work on my USW-Enterprise-48-PoE (720W).

This looks awesome and I anticipate getting some. However I’m at a point where I’m frustrated with ubiquiti. They don’t have a defined way of releasing new products, rather than have a clear and concise plan of what is going to launch in the coming months, they randomly drop new innovations. For example, il go and order 4 of these, and then 1 month later, a poe version will come out. It was nice having the EA store so we had a general glimpse of what products were coming out in the near future.

A UI employee confirmed there is full VLAN tagging support like their other switches. If you check 3:56 in this video you'll also notice it lacks the warning from the Flex Mini which reads, "Tagged VLAN Management is limited on this device. ".

Looks good to me. Shows how right I am to be frustrated over Ubiquiti including gigabit ports on the new UDM Pro Max. There is no reason not to have 2.5Gbps be the minimum now, especially since Wifi 7 can regularly provide faster than gigabit. It is stupid that we would be okay with bottlenecking our wireless network with the wired ones behind it.
