By request, here is when Steve Jobs introduced Mac OS X for the first time ever. I edited the video myself to show the very best moments of the presentation & split it up into 3 parts on account of youtube's bogus time limit.

Yeah that's why I still run iOS 6.1.4 on my primary iPhone 5 64GB. I hate that they ditched their flagship UI when Steve Jobs died and Jony Ives the hardware designer, was given control of the software design as well and came out with his flat "button", neon-colored iOS 7 abomination.?

God I miss Apple events like this. Even the beginning few seconds of the clip "..but we're not done yet". The iconic "but wait there's more" back in the day with Apple had a whole OPERATING SYSTEM after it. And those "goals" slides?? Amazing. Clear concise vision and communicated clearly. RIP Jobs and Apple :(

Its truly is unbelievable that OSX was first shown in 2000. I remember when I first got OSX running on my oooold iMac when I was just a kid. OSX was such an advanced operating system for 2000, and still in 2008 its way ahead of its time. Apple and Steve are just incredible.

I learnt a lot about computers from watching my parents on the iMac back in the late 2000's. I always envied my dad for solving computer problems. The computer was 'Daddy's thing.' Ten years later, I'm solving the same computer problems as him 🙂 We all thought it would be my brother to inherit the computer brains, but no. It was me.

I don't think thats true, he just sold great stuff (The beste you could get. . For doing that, pointing out the aspects of the product which make it the best you could get is enough to sell it. He was very enthusiastic about it because he knew about the products truth, the soul of the product. That what Apple was about. (WAS unfortenuatly)

I love Unix systems, so I am using Linux at the moment. The reason that I have considered switching to Mac is the best you can because you have a solid Unix system with a friendly interface and include security for a major company like Apple. And the most important for me (developer), is that I can use propiertary and software from Microsoft or use open source GNU software like QT, GTK, Python, and so on.

@SyncAllData I think the Darwin kernel is open source. That's how OSx86, a project for getting OS X working on PC hardware, was even possible. And Steve Jobs did mention "Linux" in this presentation, but Mac OS X is based on NeXTSTEP, which is the operating system for the computer company NeXT Computer, which Steve Jobs worked in before joining Apple again.

At the time, Windows 98SE and Windows NT 4.0 were Microsoft's primary operating systems. NT 4.0 had 4 different versions on the market. 5 if you count the embedded version. Also Windows Me and Windows 2000 were right around the corner, and everyone knew or guessed that 2000 would also have several different versions like NT 4.0 had at the time.

Because they both follow the POSIX standards (wiki it!), its a set of standards that many programmers felt was a great idea, allowing programs to run from one plateform to another without much/any code modification. Linus in his book "Just for fun" indicated that he followed the POSIX standards so in the long run when his system is up and running, he wouldn't have to rewrite everything such as copy list, move etc etc.... btw what court case are you talking about?

@bonchbonch Explain how on earth the registry slows your computer and explain how removing invalid entries speed it up. Windows does not "hang" when there's an invalid entry, an application will simply ignore it/overwrite it when accessed. Sure, it will leave it there, it and it's few bytes of storage, but in now way does it slow down a computer. I will admit, booting OSX is a hella lot faster than booting windows, but once up and running, applications etc. launch much faster.

@bonchbonch Fragmentation happens across all filesystems (unless defragmentation methods are build into the FS) and cause slow access if the data is fragmented across the drivers. Now this only will slow down older and slower HDD's. If you get a modern HDD, there is no need for defragging. Also, with SSD's you cannot defrag them due to the random access capabilities (no head to move back and forth). OSX never had a progress bar, just a spinning wheel. Also, no progress bar in XP +.
