Boise State obviously needs to start the best Quarterback and never touch a 2 QB system. But I really hope it’s Nelson that wins. I can’t imagine the outrage from casual fans and I don’t think it will be good for fan support. But obviously if we win games the fans will come and support. (Or even if we lose games considering we broke the attendance record in one of our worse seasons)

I'm no expert at all. However, it does seem Maddux throws into heavy/ risky coverage while having an open man up the middle or check down. I understand they have reads, etc, but he appears to be high risk, high reward. Meaning, he'll likely have more INT than what we're used to seeing from our QB, but he'll also make some highlight reel throws. It all depends on whether the coaches want a game manager or a gunslinger. I'm excited either way for the season. I'm grateful for all their hard work in preparing while attending school simultaneously.
@BroncoBleymaierАй бұрын
A. He was a freshman so he still occasionally made some freshman mistakes with his reads. He’s now a sophomore with experience and will be better B. The circumstances he was in (late in the game down 2 scores, or third and long and in obvious passing situations) necessitated throwing into coverage that he may not otherwise have wanted to. Also doing that consistently would build habit patterns that would need to be unlearned and luckily he’s had a whole fall camp to do so. However, as you can see by watching the highlights he often took the check down (especially in the Memphis game) or the open read short across the middle and the amount of times he actually threw into coverage gets blown out of proportion.
@jaysonphelan6095Ай бұрын
@BroncoBleymaier That is a fair point and would account. Don't get me wrong, he's an amazing athlete. With another year under his belt and developing his skill set, he's probably much improved in seeing the field and decision making.

Madsen is an amazing competitor and a leader. No one can take that away from him. I am a Maddux Madsen fan. He's just not the guy. If he starts then it means that Nelson was either not ready or not talented enough to beat him out which is a huge let down. Maddux's ceiling is an average starter for an average MWC program or a premium backup for a G5 team vying for the playoff. He has a weaker arm, but can get by against some MWC defenses, especially with our offensive line and RB's. He is accurate when he has a clean pocket and relies on touch. However better competition, which we will face this season, will make those passes look like ducks. Against UO, WSU, OSU, and perhaps an improved SDSU & UNLV those near misses turn to picks. Pressure has forced Madsen to make his best runs and worst throws. That point is not exclusive to Maddux. However the amount of near misses he had last season was far to much for comfort. Decision making was questionable at times to say the least. My question to anyone watching is: were there any throws in this highlight video that were anything above the level of expectations for a starting quarterback at Boise State? I can rewatch, I'd be happy to...but most of those were throws you are expected to make at that level. If you go watch a Vanderbilt or Boston College game you'll see their QB make similar throws. To put it in baseball terms, he's a replacement level player. He has guts. Which converted a few 4th downs. They also caused a torn ligament. He has experience sure and I believe that if he had of played against UCLA we would have won that game. Because all we needed was a QB who meet expectations for simple throws. Love Tiller, but he wasn't able to play at that level yet. If Madsen is the starter then our ceiling is 8 wins.
@BroncoBleymaier4 ай бұрын
He was a Freshman with no playing experience and being continually undercut by the system and he made the throws in the video. Those throws and the consistency are not what you expect from a Freshman QB. He has a solid arm and high accuracy and his decision making under pressure is elite. That is why he is currently leading the QB competition. Does Nelson have a higher ceiling? Absolutely. Is he going to develop to the point to truly untap that potential by the start of the season? Maybe, but it shouldn’t be expected. Nelson’s obvious athletic potential makes him a strong contender for the starting job but Madsen’s demonstrated consistent play and high decision making combined with his valuable experience makes him also a very strong contender. It will come down to the wire but Nelson not winning the job doesn’t demonstrate a failure on his part, it shows the strength and caliber of Madsen. Nelson came here to be developed, he will start when he is ready.

@@BroncoBleymaier My stance on a G5 playoff: I will admit that after watching some P4 propaganda (lol) I wouldn’t be as pissed off as I would 3 weeks ago. 1. Ideally there is no split. 2. If we’re going to split we need to reevaluate which teams are P4 and split based simply on how good the teams are at football. (No media market or historical teams like Vandy). 3. A compromise I would be willing to make is to have the 2 highest ranked G5 champions play a game for the CFP spot. (You can move the G5 conf champs 1 week up). A Liberty vs SMU game for a playoff spot this year would have been fun to watch. (Boise State plays that game 3 times in the CFP era 2014 vs Marshall, 2017 vs UCF, and 2019 vs Memphis). 3. If the playoff gets passed in whatever form and includes Boise State we as fans (of BSU and the other G5’s) must embrace it as the new reality and support it passionately.

None of the tape backs up your statements. Even in his worst game vs Fresno he had no more than 3 balls that could have been picked and only 2 of them were obvious and that was not representative of his play throughout the season. Also to note there were 4 100% dropped balls by WRs including 1 which could have been a TD. It’s great that you played DB in college, that’s a fantastic accomplishment, however it doesn’t have anything to do with our discussion at hand which is about the facts and the evidence of the film. I just sat down and watched every single throw from Madsen this past season and nothing you are saying is accurate.

1. TGs highlights are better 2. the whole fanbase will be disappointed if Malachi isnt the starter, they dont give top 15 rankings in recuiting classes to just anyone. MM wont give us what MN can 3. MM isnt the guy that can take us through the grueling schedule of 2024 or make a playoff run. All you did with this video is show us that. You inluded a 7 yard dump off over the middle that wasnt even a 1st down. You know nothing 4. why would Malachi come here to sit out a year or two to get developed, he could have done that at USC that has more to offer 5. youre admiration for MM is weird, i get liking a player but youre a straight up cheerleader
@BroncoBleymaier4 ай бұрын
1. TG’s overall performance last year was in fact not better which is why he was constantly replaced by MM 2. What does the fan base’s preference have to do with who’s the best QB for the job? 3. The short pass across the middle was to demonstrate the range of his throwing ability and the fact that the lineman height doesn’t impact his ability to names all the passes. However your overall point here on this one makes 0 sense😂😂 It was a successful play, and the right play that showed him going through his reads, that set Boise up for an easy conversion, how does that prove he can’t take BSU through a grueling schedule? It doesn’t matter who starts at QB between Maddux and Nelson because the success of the offense will rely on Jeanty, BSU just needs stability and ball security from the QB position to find success. 4. Malachi came here because of Boise’s culture and to be developed into an NFL caliber QB. He wasn’t getting that at USC, he wasn’t a priority. He is at BSU and he will get the development he needs to be an eventual starter whenever that is. Blue Collar means you earn your place, nothing is given and that’s what Nelson wants. 5. I’m a cheerleader of facts, Maddux has earned my admiration as he should have the entire fanbase’s with his performance last season. I will do what I can to ensure he gets the credit he deserves as I will any player who’s performance deserves to be highlighted
