This is my favourite movie from the past decade and your thoughts on it are a lot similar to my own. One scene I'd like to add to the discussion is the one where Max washes the blood from his face with mother's milk. I think this is the moment where his transformation is complete, because milk is often used as a symbol for innocence and youth, aspecially milk designed for human babies. Another great parallel is the seeds. We first hear bullets being called anti-seeds and later we meet a character simply known as The Seedkeeper.

I enjoy symbolism in films and books, and I must say, that is an excellent observation on the milk and the blood connection.

That was a very interesting point you made about Fury Road being pretty much a movie about a single man trying to remember his name. It's true. The entire premise of Fury Road (and other Mad Max films) is that it's about Max returning to society, finding his human side again. I mean, George Miller pushes Max away from society each time we see him only to bring him back in every movie but with this one it's pretty extreme. The first time we see Max he's so removed from humanity he can barely speak and behaves like an animal. It's funny how some people thought Tom Hardy couldn't pull off the Australian accent because of the grunts and pointing at things but that was a deliberate decision. By the end of the film Max actually acknowledges who he really is and his journey from an animal to a human being is complete, only to be sent off into the wasteland once again.

This is by far the best analysis I’ve seen on this movie. Your points are so complex and rich, it’s easy for so many people to overlook such values the film seems to be promoting instead of something more superficial or political commentary-esque I’ve seen in other videos. These types of videos help me remember why I love film so much. Thank you.

One of the biggest things i noticed about all of Miller's films are that women are the embodiment and carriers of civilization, cooperation, and genuine survival. From Auntie Entity to the women of the gastown in the second film, its women who keep the stories of the old world, and who are most likely to a learn lesson from them.
@LifeIsAStory3 жыл бұрын
I think you are right about that. There are a quite a few film makers who you see sort of anchor the films morality around women and children. Children specifically nowadays. There are a lot of "rough people who are forced to protect a child" nowadays. But with Miller, I think you are right. The women are used to show hope and future. Appreciate the comment.

@BlackSunsh1ne20 күн бұрын
Great review! I think Max *does* believe his line "You know, hope is a mistake. If you can't fix what's broken, you'll go insane". The movie starts off with him being completely insane, being nothing more than a mad dog, as at some point in the past (maybe a throwback to the other movies?), he dared to hope, and perhaps ran away without 'fixing what's broken'.

Excellent analysis... my only complaint with this movie was him leaving at the end but you're right that he wouldn't be the type to stick around and play house. However, I wish he could've kissed her and whispered that he would come back from time to time to check on her. No? Maybe we can get a third installment: Max & Furiosa? I think Nux had a great character arc too. That actor is killing it today 10 years later...

good analysis, and commentary. it's been a while since i've seen it and i think that needs to change. :)
@barryballinger60232 жыл бұрын
He's defining "Hope" in that scene as wishful thinking. Just hoping without doing anything. However, "fixing what's broken" is a statement about hope. Ironically, it's the most poignant message of apocalyptic fiction: Seeing the bad stuff, so you can see the world beyond it, stripping down all the rubbish so we can define what's important, and have a reset.

Max lost his identity after he couldn’t save a woman and her child in Bullet or Gas town before the shooting of Fury road. Maybe he has forgotten his wife and child long ago and this event was enough to send him over the edge of insanity.
@perun66883 жыл бұрын
No, He has not forgot anyone, they still haunt him, that is the reason why he left at the end of Fury Road, He is a drifter, looking for home he doesn't have, He actually prefers to be left in pain alone.
@aah78067 ай бұрын
You also have to understand Max as a character. Before the apocalypse he was a police officer, a symbol of justice. In the wasteland, the symbols of the apocalypse have taken justice out of the world, and good is taken by evil. Furiosa, through Fury around and the excellent prequel, is righteous vengeance, which inspires Max to remember his name (ie, remember who he is), and he is a reborn into what he always was: a symbol of blind justice. That's why he drifts. He has no home, he is not a family man, he is reduced to one thing and that is blind justice, which is the makings of society post-apocalypse.

In relation to the Christian imagery of light shining in the darkness: “The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined.” Isaiah 9:2 NKJV “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.”” Matthew 4:16 NKJV The creation accounts in Genesis and the Gospel of John have very specific language about the creation of light and it being separated from darkness: “And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.” Genesis 1:4 NKJV “And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1:5 NKJV This imagery correlates to the division of good and evil: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Psalms 23:4 NKJV “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21 NKJV
