When the previews for Fury Road came out I was disappointed. It showed a lot of the big CG, unrealistic stuff and I thought it was just going to be a hyped let down movie that would ruin the original trilogy. So I slept on it. Well, 2 weeks before it was about to leave my local theaters I decided to give it a shot. I WAS completely and utterly corrected on my initial stance of Fury Road. I walked out of that theater thinking that I had just experienced THE MOST ass-kicking movie ever. Fury Road had everything going for it and it deserves every single award and praise that it garnered, if not more. I still held the Road Warrior as the best in the series though. Well, time went on and I ended up watching both films again. Then as I pondered over them it hit me. Fury Road is absolutely THE BEST Mad Max film. That is coming from an old fashioned purist too. It cranked everything to 11, if not 12 in most instances and didn’t have any weaknesses that I could see. The Road Warrior is a real classic and still holds up today. It just doesn’t have the larger than life and incredibly paced impact that Fury Road gives.

This mirrors my experience with Furiosa. I saw the CG in the trailers and thought, "ugh". I saw it at home and now call it my favorite movie I've seen in 2024, not limited to 2024 films. Fantastic. The CG does hold back the action but the story is excellent.

Fury Road is pure genius, and obviously from the same brain; just ten times bigger! But, for me, The Road Warrior is still the better film. It's simpler, but it all boils down to Max. Tom Hardy is an amazing character actor, but Mel Gibson was a leading actor, who is just okay in the first Mad Max, but just fucking KILLS it, in this film! Such a dramatic step-up, in a universe that also jumps up enormously.

Road Warrior= Sci Fi, Fury Road = fantasy. Road warrior is a movie that realistically depicts something that could really happen. Fury Road is just pure fantasy. I would argue that Fury Road is not even a Mad Max movie. Its Furiosa number1. Miller is just following the woke trend like HeMan did.

I thought stories had to make sense. Fury Road's doesn't. I thought supporting characters were supposed to be more than a meme-able gimmick. Fury Road's aren't. I thought the world had to have some internal consistency, not just overloading the screen with overdesigned nonsence, as Fury Road's does. I though CGI-izing everything including the practical effects they boasted about can't be superior to actual, believable, practical effects done in ways illegal today. Well, that's 17min of my life I'm never getting back.
