Bombs didn't destroy the landscape in the video game. The video game takes place in a coastal region that has been dried up due to shifting tectonic plates. Also the game CLEARLY takes place right before Fury Road, because by the end of the movie the Interceptor looks almost exactly the same as it does at the start of Fury Road, and if you get all the upgrades, Max's attire is EXACTLY what he's wearing at the beginning of Fury Road. Not to mention that Scrotus is the son of Immortun Joe, and when he died, the People Eater took over control of Gas Town. There have always been settlements in the world of Mad Max, he just generally tries to avoid them as much as possible, and in the video game you kind of HAVE to have population or else it becomes a very boring game lol. As for the gasoline, that's clearly a video game feature, or else it ceases to be a driving game, and becomes a walking game, because you'd run out of gas. Gas Town makes this possible though, because they can pump up massive amounts of gasoline and distribute it to nearby places. That's the only reason there's fuel, and that's also why there's able to be many more settlements, because they can fuel their vehicles to more effectively go out and scavenge, and compete with the hordes of Scrotus. It has nothing to do with the era, and everything to do with the location. Chum Bucket isn't referring to Max's legend in the Wasteland, he's referring to him as The Saint, in his own spiritual belief structure. He has "visions" granted to him by the angel combustion and the spirit of V8, similar to what Immortun Joe has built-up as their belief structure, with Valhalla and whatnot. Also people cannot be "freshly mutated" nowhere in Mad Max are mutants a thing. Deformities from birth defects are MUCH more likely, and Chum Bucket clearly states a bunch of times that he has spent his whole life in the wasteland working on cars and in gas town serving the Immortuns. Chum Bucket is most likely around 20 years old himself, which means this game has to take place MANY years after the "Pocyclypse" in order for this to be possible. Fury Road HAS to take place after all the other movies, and the clearest indication of this is the condition of Max's jacket. His jacket in the first movie is clean and intact, in Road Warrior, the sleeve is gone, he's added the shoulder pad, and its roughed-up, but still intact, in Thunderdome, the zipper has lost several teeth, and it is heavily stitch-repaired, as well as having specific damages that he sustained in Road Warrior from Bearclaw's attack. His jacket in the video game ALSO features these damages, which means it has to take place after that as well, and finally, in Fury Road, it has these same damages again. Your comment about him losing the jacket is incorrect, because in the final shot of the film, where he is walking across the desert, he actually IS wearing the jacket again beneath his cloak. Its very believable that after everything he's been through, he would definitely go back for the jacket, and as we see the shoulder pad sticking up from beneath the cloak at the end, he definitely has it back. As for the leg... In Thunderdome, he walks on it perfectly fine, with just a regular knee wrap to prevent excess pain from long periods of walking on it. By the time we get to Fury Road, he's got a basic leg brace, but can not only walk around, but he's running, jumping, and doing stunts and whatnot, moreso than he has before. It's been a long healing process, but it's happened. The Interceptor that we see in Fury Road isn't the same Interceptor that is in Road Warrior (obviously, because it's been blown up). You can not count the comics as much as you like, but Miller said that HE wrote the stories, and that they are canon. So... They are. In the Max comic spinoff, he specifically states that he has been building a new Ford Falcon to be another Interceptor, and it specifically mentions the events of Thunderdome in it. By the end of the comic, he drives off in it, and then we have the events of the video game, which clearly pick up where that left off, and then at the beginning of Fury Road, it is stolen by the War Boys, and then later smashed into oblivion during the final chase, leaving Max with nothing yet again. At the end of the Mad Max video game, he gets a piece-meal Interceptor back from Scrotus, minus the tanks, and in Fury Road, we see that he's acquired one tank since that time, and during that time he's also gone completely feral, and has stopped trying. 33 years matches up perfectly with how long Max has been wandering the wasteland, so... Not sure why you're just dismissing that fact. Also the history of what came before the wasteland is basically GONE at this point, except for what Miss Kitty and the Wives know about (and obviously Joe and people like Max, who were alive before that). Not to mention Furiosa was stolen as a child and brought to Citadel, which means the societal collapse HAD to be longer ago than that. If you wanna go with Joe's lifespan, that makes sense, but it would ALSO mean Before and After Death. Joe's "Death" and subsequent return to life supposedly happened when he took over the Citadel, which happened just around the time when society collapsed, which means the beginning of the Wasteland era (just before Road Warrior) Which means the 33 year "lifespan" still makes sense, and places Fury Road as the last in the series. George Miller's comments (in addition to the ones you mention) clearly state that he doesn't care about continuity. That's why there's weapons and clothing and equipment in Fury Road that COULDN'T have existed back in the 70's/80's, when the world supposedly ended. Mad Max exists on a floating timeline, and Miller says the Mad Max apocalypse is always just around the corner from the world we live in. It's always our future, and always will be. It's not an alternate timeline. Max's stories are ALWAYS stories told by other people, except for the one in Fury Road. Max tells us the story, and when he leaves, the story ends. In the first movie, its a movie that is just a movie, and its told that way, with us as omnipotent observers. Road Warrior is told to us by the Feral Kid as an old man, and Thunderdome turns out to be told to us by Savannah, after they've established a settlement in Sydney. Fury Road is the first time we actually get a story FROM Max's perspective. Really you just have to look at the state of the Wasteland to see the chronology: Mad Max- There are towns, there are authority figures, there are people who can just walk around and buy things with money, take vacations, etc. We hear about bad shit going down in the rest of the world, but it hasn't quite hit the "terminal freakout point" yet. The biker gangs still have to be tricky, and sneaky to kill their enemies, and there's a system of courts still in place. Mad Max: Road Warrior- Society has collapsed, government and law enforcement have collapsed. The gangs have turned into nomadic war parties, and their leaders into warlords. The remnants of the old world still hang by a thread, such as the oil refinery, which you can see that Papagallo had worked at BEFORE the world fell, and brought his friends and loved ones there for safety. Gasoline is incredibly sparse, but still possible to find, and the roads are still existing, though they've clearly not been taken care of because there's nobody left to do it. Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome- The roads are gone, the gas is gone, and the wasteland is now just a bunch of dunes. Bartertown only survives by using methane to power their vehicles and buildings. The fact that gasoline is so far gone indicates that this is an even more incredibly isolated place than other places in the wasteland. HOWEVER! Jedidiah the pilot has a plane that runs on gasoline, so he still knows of places to get it. Mad Max: The Comic Book- Max has no vehicle, just a small dinky cart that he's built in order to get him from point A to B to scavenge for parts for The Interceptor, which he is building another one of. This links up to how he ended up at the conclusion of Thunderdome, which was without a real mode of transport, but he had enough wrecked vehicles laying around him to make the cart. He makes mention that he has been at this awhile, so we can even imply that his trip in Thunderdome was simply another scavenging mission to acquire parts for the Interceptor. Gas Town and its nearby settlements have gasoline simply because Gas Town exists, and can keep pumping up crude oil from below to make it with. That's why they've held out this long with gas engines. Mad Max: The Video Game- We see Max starts off with the Interceptor he finished building at the end of the comic book, and promptly loses it as he has his run-in with Scrotus. He loses the car, builds the Magnum Opus, and then loses that just before reclaiming the Interceptor again, even though its considerably more fucked up, and is now missing the tanks he had at the end of the comic (which he DID still have at the beginning of the video game). Still in the Gas Town region, so still dependent on Gas Town for the gasoline. Mad Max: Fury Road- Max has the Interceptor from the end of the video game, and the events of the game have burned him out much more than he ever has been before. He has opened himself up to the possibility of caring and love TWICE, and had those people horribly die on him (at the hands of the Buzzards and Scrotus respectfully). Now he's wandering the area around Gas Town, which is the only nearby place he can get gasoline, and trying to fix up the Interceptor enough to get OUT of there, and reach the Plains of Silence, which he has been trying to cross since the events of the video game. Still in the Gas Town area, so still utilizing the Gas Town supplies. Anyway, that's everything.

He doesn't leave with nothing though. He just walks away without a vehicle, and this would hardly be the first time that has happened to him. He walked away at the end of Thunderdome with no wheels, but still survived nonetheless. It's entirely conceivable that he will get ahold of a vehicle somewhere in Citadel on his way out, or that he'll get one elsewhere now that Furiosa is the boss of the entire region. The main point of his little nod while walking away is "You did good, and you should be in charge, but I don't have a place here. I'll make my own way." Just like he said to her earlier. Where's he going? How's he gonna get there? We don't know, but we DO know that he's a whole person again because of the experience he went through that made him give a shit again. He didn't HAVE to help Furiosa and the wives get back to Citadel, he just did it because he had to "fix whats broken". In himself and in the world around him. Sticking around and making a difference is the only thing that quiets those ghosts in his head, and now he's free of them... at least for awhile. He hasn't given up, its just the opposite, he's got his humanity back.
@tampabuster
@tampabuster 7 жыл бұрын
No, you're spot-on, I didn't mean he was ready to rejoin humanity, I'm just saying he found the humanity in himself. Max was never part of society in the wasteland, he's always just been a mythical figure. This is the only movie that was told from HIS perspective, because he was no longer that mythical road warrior, showing up and doing good, he was just a crazed animal and needed to find his path again. That's the idea at the end of the movie where it says "Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland in search of our better selves?" The notion is that maybe there will be a time when Max can return to society, but he just can't seem to push himself THAT far. So in a way, he'll fade into obscurity for awhile, but he'll return again when he gets involved somewhere else.

I agree with fluffykittynoodles that the future speak is kind of dumb. Some of it I understand to a point I guess. The older people (Max's age and older) are from the pre-war era and remember that world. The younger people are either late pre-war or post-war born, and they may have lost their parents at a very young age and had to take care of themselves until they stumbled upon the settlement that they live in. That would explain them talking like idiots. As for the older, pre-war born people referring to gasoline as "guzzoline", here is my thought. Gas is scarce at this point. Oil is being pumped out of the earth and they are refining it into gas, but due to the lack of other resources, the gas produced is not pure gasoline. Changes had to be made to make it a usable combustible fuel, and as such they changed the name to "guzzoline". It's just my theory. And that's one of the great things about a film series like Mad Max, it is all up to interpretation.
@davareno182
@davareno182 8 жыл бұрын
Dustin Snelgrove a valid point! it could stand to reason that they'd call it something else if they aren't scrubbing the crude right... but that's probably looking too far into it. to me, you can't refine fuel unless you have a working knowledge of an oil refinery. maybe 5 years have passed since the bombs fell? 15 since the world started going to shit? there's got to be a few legacy employees still running the plant and supplying the region through barter. they would probably just accept the slang instead of explaining to everyone that it's pronounced gasoline lol... but again, they were never calling it that if they're in Australia... it's petrol there. BTW i was the one with the problem with the future speak... kitten-noodle has apparently only seen fury road.

I disagree with the theory which claims that that the feral kid is Max also. At the end of The Road Warrior, the narrator reveals that he is the adult version of the feral kid, and that he succeeded the Gyro Captain as the leader of the gas refinery crew from the second film.

The interesting detail that I’ve noticed specially in the Mad Max Game is that Max was someone that was born on the old world and remembers when water was still on the oceans. But there’s a lot of characters that he met that are expressively older than him (Gutgash for example) or close to his age (Chumbucket) that just describe the presence of water in the oceans as a historical or very doubtful fact. This just made me theorize that Max is as timeless as an epic story character. Maybe he is always looking young because the stories of the Dune Drifter are like myths of that universe: One story is kept under constant alterations due to being shared from mouth to mouth until they become epical and surreal.

At the end of Thunder Dome, there is a scene of the survivor kids setting around a fire in an empty city where they have a new tradition of lighting a fire for the Road Warrior, sort of putting a candle in a window, while they share the story of him with the next generation. If we think of the whole series as the story of his adventures as told by the survivors, it becomes easy to understand some of the strange parts of the story. The storyteller simply takes a little poetic license with the epic tale of Mad Max, the Road Warrior who saved their lives so long ago..
@BruceCarroll
@BruceCarroll 6 жыл бұрын
That's how I think of the saga. I consider Mad Max to be the "actual events," the story of the man who lived right as civilization was collapsing. The others I consider as stories being told generations later based on this "historical" figure. (Note that Road Warrior, Thunderdome, and Fury Road all have first-person narrators. Heck, one of the motifs of Thunderdome is repetition, whether it is the people of Bartertown repeating the law -- "Two men enter, one man leaves," or the children repeating Max when he awakens, or even when they imitate the wind -- "Stop the noise!" Of course, the repetition of "The Tell" is explained at the end of the story. I'm not even convinced the narrator of Fury Road is Max himself. It is just as likely a someone telling the story as if he were Max. All three of these movies contain scenes about which the narrator could not possibly know. I'm not even sure anyone actually recalls exactly how civilization fell.) On another video, someone (I don't recall who, so if you're reading this, please tell us) suggested that Road Warrior and Fury Road are different versions of the same story. If the Feral Kid really was the narrator of the former, it seems possible he might have thought the tanker was hauling guzzoline, when in fact it was hauling sex slaves. He could have thought Immortan Joe's body armour was the well-muscled Humungus, but I think it's more likely he thought Rictus was the leader (who's name he can't remember and so he calls him "Lord Humungus.) The description of him wearing a mask could easily conjure either image in the minds of the listeners. If you like this hypothesis, consider that a child didn't even register in the memory of Max (or whoever the storyteller of Fury Road is) decades after the events.

You are correct in your statements . Read the comics leading up to Fury Road co-written by George Miller and it will confirm that the events of this movie are being narrated by someone to a group of children. The host of Thunderdome is in one story albeit much older along with a version of Thunderdome itself. The last comic tie-in ends post film events with theme of repetition being stated.

I'm glad you got to the point of the mad max movies being akin to campfire stories. Each movie points to this: The feral kid is the narrator of The Road Warrior. The (now grown) girl from thunderdome tells the new younger children in their new home the tale of max from when she herself was a teen. The end of Fury Road references the "first history man" who is the likely source of the events of fury road in the form of a tale about how Furiosa siezed power. The movies are in many ways an anthology that point to the fact that there WAS a road warrior once, years ago...but the details of the events and the specific timelines are muddled through years of oral tradition.
@Solas67

Hi. Fellow Mad Max fan here. I have to unfortunately disagree with yout theory on several points: 1) The comics: these are written primarily by Miller's concept, and finished by Fury Road concept artist Mark Sexton. These are the stories intended to be the backstory. It's important to note (and I direct you to the You Are Awaited podcast which features in-depth interviews with people involved in the production) that the game is NOT considered canon by Kennedy Miller Mitchell. The game was taken away from KMM during production of the movie and the story was developed independently by Avalanche Studios L.A. When I spoke to Mark Sexton on the game, he confirmed that the Hope/Glory storyline was -always- intended to be the one as presented in the comics. Miller was so angry about this that he allegedly was going to disown the game, but this didn't come about due to the movie needing to be finished. 2) The bombs falling: Chumbucket can't exist before Thunderdome with radiation poisoning because the bombs appear to fall between Road Warrior and Thunderdome. Note that in the original narration for Road Warrior, they speak of a war that drags on forever that essentailly brings about the fall of civilsation. In Fury Road context, we take this to mean the Oil and Water Wars. The bombs falling are -only- referred to in Thunderdome. How do we know this? Max is carrying a geiger counter, the Lost Tribe of children talk about the 'poccyclipse' and neither of these things are a concern or happening in Road Warrior. 3) The Interceptor being rebuilt is explicitly addressed in the comics; MFP officers and a gearhead like Max would know what constituted their cars because they were rare and valuable commodities. And to Max, the Interceptor is a core part of his personality, one of the few things that are a connection to his humanity. 4) The story is mythological. On KZbin, there's a wonderful two hour conversation with Miller, Nico Lathouris and Brendan McCarthy about the worldbuilding of Fury Road, and noone bar noone confirms a timeline. It's mythological storytelling that happens in a land unnamed, though anyone from Australia (like myself) recognizes names, nicknames and places. I even have a strong and geologically sound theory as to where the Citadel, Gas Town and the Wall of Mountains are in Fury Road. But that's not what that story is about and I'm fine with that. The point of the stories as early as Road Warrior are that they're akin to the 'wandering gunfighter' stories ala the Clint Eastwood era. Timeless. Not pinned down anywhere, anywhen. Just...places. And that gives Miller the freedom to worldbuild as he sees fit.

There's a detail that I haven't noticed anyone touch on yet; if you look at Max's clothes in Thunderdome, his jacket and pants still have a semi-decent amount of their original black finish to them, but in Fury Road the top finish is completely gone, to the point of his clothing looking like they were made from brown suede instead of being shiny black motorcycle leathers. Just a lil observation there :)

A thing to consider is the bullets. In Road Warrior and Thunderdome, not many bullets are used, but in Mad Max and Fury Road, bullets are aplenty. As time goes on, the difficulty of making gun powder would be almost as difficult as making "guzzuline".
@Antiganos
@Antiganos 6 жыл бұрын
I'm going to assume that the prevalence of bullets, gasoline, and water are a result of Gas Town, The Bullet Farmer, and The Citadel being present in the movie. Each leader has enough of these resources to waste (therefore establishing their power), and not necessarily just what they could cobble together. Fury Road tells us that Joe pumps water, Gas Town refines crude oil on mobile fracking stations, and Bullet Farmer probably cooks powder, which is fairly simple to do.

My theory of the Mad Max time-line: -1970: The world starts running out of oil. -1972: The Day 1 of the NEW History. The day the Oil wars started. Several militar conflicts around the world between the Soviet Union and the USA for control of the last sources of Oil. -1985: MAD MAX and the Nuclear holocaust that destroys society. -1992: MAD MAX 2 in the post apocaliptic world. -1998: MAD MAX 3. -2005: MAD MAX 4 (Max is 42 years old).

I think you hit it bang on buddy! We are in the era of reboots! Time travel is often used to gain a new fan base while keeping it's current fans at ease. Mad Max is doing something even better. We are getting entertaining "movies" based on the events leading up to the conclusion with Thunder Dome. I'm sure a lot of stuff happened to Max in that 30 year gap after Road Warriors! WELL DONE!

The wrecked interceptor is combined with the lone wolf (engine and chasis) in beyond thunderdome pulled by camels until it's repaired in the underworld by the mechanic who asks to defuse the bombs, It is then driven to Max by Screwloose at the end where max gets off the plane to drive it into Aunties gang who then lets him live with the vehicle. After this point is when he'd meet hope and glory in a story loosely told by the comics and the game (pre fury road) where he would have had the interceptor more properly repaired and the body retrieved from the buzzard king Nice vid btw :) I just had to point out that the interceptor was indeed in thunderdome and I'm sure if they'd go back to those movies, the first would be more post apocalyptic due to budget and they'd make Max look younger in thunderdome so it all fits together much better. Btw did anyone else notice the semi trailer in fury road following behind the armada picking up the wrecked vehicles like buzzards and bikes to take back to the citadel for repairs? I think we can still see the interceptor again

Your time line theory is exactly how I see it, as well. The fact that Max has been roaming the wasteland for 2-3 years, before the Interceptor is destroyed, gives plenty of time for the game to take place. Not to mention Max's age in the game. I think you nailed it logically. However, from a simple story teller pov, Road Warrior-Fury Road could all be stories or fables about one man. Road Warrior has a narrator who tells of a man called Max, who saved him and his people. I think if the other movies had narration, the whole time line thing wouldn't matter. They would just be numerous amazing stories about one man. Like the vid man!

I believe that the tattoo is actually talking about it being 45 years after the first movie, because the wasteland is so desolate, and the game happens right before fury road. I believe this because the wasteland in the game is right up on gas town, explaining the abundance of gas, and with the surrounding areas being impassable, the game is isolated but Max takes his car out through the big nothing. Max manages to convert the Magnum Opus into a re-hashed interceptor and takes it out into the wasteland and makes it to Immortan Joe's strong hold, but is hunted and captured b/c he killed Joe's son and disrupted/destroyed the influence of Immortan Joe, letting the people eater take over. The girl that we see in fury road is glory because Max had similar illusions in the game. Max himself is a child sometime around thunderdome who hears the legend of Max and finds a jacket very similar to the original. He doesn't have a name for the first part of the movie and eventually settles on the name 'Max'. I also believe this b/c such drastic changes in the human body like those seen in chum and the war boys don't happen instantly, they usually take at least a generation b/c its much easier for gametes (sex cells) to undergo mutation than it is for existing cells to undergo the same drastic mutations b/c there are less chromosomes and no pre-existing DNA for any counter-change to happen. My theory for Immortan Joe being hailed as a religious figure explains his condition and his status. When the war started, he was very close to a nuclear detonation, and then became a warlord and gaining the reputation of being unkillable. Over the years, he rises to power through his cunning nature. Society begins to be rebuilt in Sydney, but with Fury road and the game happening closer to west Texas in the sea bed. Max and some other members of the cast migrated there from Australia, with most of the Pacific being the Big Nothing. This explains the occasional Australian accent, but also why people like Jeet, Gutgash, and Furiosa along with the buzzards having American accents while the war boys started as a few of them from Australia, but were all raised together, explaining their accents and similarity. It also explains why pink eye looks to be native American instead of aboriginal. So all that is why I believe the order to be Mad Max, Road Warrior, Thunderdome, The Game, and then Fury Road, with the events previously stated happening in between the movies.

If Max stayed at Mel Gibson's current age, then the timeline would be more acceptable. But at Tom Harding's age (and him and Charlize Therone being about the same age), Max couldn't have been an adult police officer and Charlize had been a child, when the apocalypse occurred.

I see the Mad Max saga as a "Tales from the Wasteland" anthology with Max either a folk hero from the old world, or a mostly silent protagonist for the purpose of being a vessel for the audience to experience the tale. I love the franchise no matter what, it seems to be a realistic (albeit exaggerated) representation of what could happen after a nuclear apocalypse.

Theory can be destroyed simply by stating- The Game takes alot of stuff from the movies, as any games coming out close to a movie of same title/Universe Usually does. Hence in Fury Road there's a shit ton of Gas- Gas being scarce has nothing to do with the "Time setting" It's more so different areas of the world would house more and or less Gasoline, Same goes with water, food, ammunition. Fury Road is most likely not in Australia or the areas around it, but Somewhere in the US. But all in all who knows. Reason Max doesn't talk much according to George Miller is because his voice is lost to him, as he's been alone for a very.. Very long time. he's not used to hearing it, he doesn't like talking. The Plot of The game is to get back your car, make it strong enough so you can drive across the planes of silence, to find peace of mind, as Max is Tired he's worn- And he feels guilty for his failures. I love the Theory but too man things go against this, and well anyone else trying to set the game into the order of the movies.

I have a theory based on what Miller said aboutt having any real chronology between the movies. The original triology are stories told about Max's life, they actully happened more or less how they're shown/toldand were done so during his life possibly by him. Now Fury road Furosia, I probaby spelled that wrong haven't watched in awhile, is telling her story and to make it more interesting she adds in this figure of legend, or maybe because the legend of Max is so famous her mind played a trick on her and she remembers him being there even though he wasn't. As for the game I actully heard that was in no way connected to the movie canon just that Miller was consulted and approved things, but it could either be an actual event, or a story told about him that wasn't true.

Here's my version, please read it if you like: (note I am taking the Comics into consideration because they fill in the gaps for me) 1. Mad Max (1979) is the first movie, starring Max. Before the events of the fall of civilization, their is already a war in the Middle East, with US and Soviet Intervention, since it's most likely the movie takes place in the same year it was released (1979). And due to the war their was somewhat of a "second Cold-War" like era. But the people weren't really threaten, because the last Cold War never happened and, according to the comics, the government kept everything quiet. But when the oil supply in the Middle East started to go down, many countries were affected, leaving several businesses and government departments out of work. This would lead to the creation of the MFP, the police force Max works for. And with the lack of actually police, the motorcycle gangs started to rise to power, setting the stage for Mad Max one. 2. Road Warrior (1981)takes place 2 years in the future, according to George Miller. At this time life in the cities has become dangerous, forcing many people to band together in the harsh Australian environments. At this time, the lack of oil to make gasoline has cause mass value for the stuff, with several factions dependent on the stuff willing to fight for it. Role the Road Warrior. (It should be noted that Mad Max 2 doesn't take place after the Video Game because Miller himself stated that Road Warrior was pre-war.) 3. Beyond Thunderdome (1996) takes place. In the original movie Max's car was destroyed, forcing him to ride around in the camel wagon. In this time the desert seems to be the main environment in the area, due to the war, but during the last chase minutes and the camp of small children their is still green everywhere, leaving me to believe that the war did happen, but the radiation from the nuclear bombs isn't all that powerful since it didn't really contaminate the water. 4. In Max's comic book, it reveals that after the events of Beyond Thunderdome, Max continues on his journey, acting as a scavenger. It seems that he is trying to recreate his V8 Interceptor. After he kills a Buzzard gang member, he is critically wounded and the Buzzards steal his car, leaving him to die. However, he is saved by a woman who wants him to safe her daughter from the same Buzzards that stole Max's car. After infiltrating the Buzzard hideout, he discovers that the Buzzards rebuilt his car, answering why the parts seemed rusted and out of place. After he escapes the woman and daughter get killed, and the girl's spirit will haunt's Max's mind into Fury Road. 5. Now we move on to Fury Road. And we know how this ends. This actually explains it because his car ends up being destroyed again and he is left without his iconic car. After the movie he walks off into the Wasteland. Now I am not counting the Video Game as directly canon, but loosely-canon. See, Scabrous Scrotus, the antagonist in the game, is revealed canon in the comics, but doesn't make an appearance in Fury Road. My thinking is that Scrotus, who was a psychopathic murderer, was too dangerous to keep around the Citadel, so Joe sent him to Gastown to enforce the People Eater to continue trade with the Citadel, due to Joe not fully trusting him like Bullet Farmer. So while Fury Road was happening, Scrotus stayed to rule at Gastown. Now the game, in my opinion, doesn't contribute to the series story-like, but the environment, people, and places are all canon. Since Scrotus was canon, why couldn't characters like Jeet and Chumbucket not be too? Also the Max in the game is completely different then the Max from the movies. For all those that don't know, the game Max was a soldier before the war, answering why he has so many different abilities. And that is my thinking on the Max Mad universe. Come to think about it, if the people and locations are teh same as the canon universe, that could actually help us map out the setting of Mad Max Fury Road. But yeah what do you guys think? By the why Shotana Studios good theory it's just that it didn't make much sense to me and I feel that explaining it in words would help you understand why.

Not a bad piece of deduction, but you got more on track at the end. Didn't Miller already answer this question during an interview before Fury Road was released?The first three movies are chronological. Fury Road is not.Fury Road was considered to be "another tale of the Road Warrior" similar to how Road Warrior was a tale told by the aging Feral Kid. Think of it... in RW and FR he loses the interceptor, there are huge chases with semi rigs, where massive battles take place. The Humungous and Immortan Joe are almost the same character except Joe lives in a settlement. So, essentially the "legend" of the Road Warrior (or one battle he was in) is simply told through Fury Road possibly by an aging Furiosa, or one of the Brides.Excellent movie, but I think this is a retell of Road Warrior after having been recorded in the wordburgers.

Its a good theory but there are parts that just don't add up. The interceptor I think was put in Fury Road just because it's Maxs' signature vehicle, and everyone loves it. It only lasted a couple of minutes anyway. I can't believe that he would take Papagallos rig and just manage to find the parts to rebuild an interceptor. It was said a few times in the first and second that it was a rare car. The other thing that doesn't make much sense from a timeline perspective is the bad guys. I can't see how society can fall so much they start believing in such a religious way that there doesn't seem to be any links to how it used to be. No way would they forget how it was before the war, not when Max is still alive anyway. Even if they were born after the bombs fell, would the older generation really not teach them how it was? Immortan Joe wasn't the only one reproducing. If they were a post-apocalyptic tribe then how did they learn how to drive, refuel and maintain vehicles - let alone speakers and stuff. In Thunderdome, Bartertown was more of an accurate representation of a rebuilding society. They had trade, laws, power etc. It would make more sense that it was set AFTER this film but then again Max is so young looking. I'd go by George Millers comments that there isn't really a proper timeline, didn't he want to make this film ages ago? Perhaps Thunderdome veered off the timeline and fury road is the proper sequel to Road Warrior with a cameo interceptor!

That being so Max himself may not the same man in the later stories but others that take his name or were given that name in the retold stories because thier real name was forgotten.

The idea that Max is a legendary character with a retold story and each time it's retold it changes a little. I also say there's a correlation to Mad Max themes being the seven stages of grief. I know there's 5 but psychology bumped in two more here and there. And the "grieving" is over the end of the world. With Miller saying there'll be two more there's your 7. Loved the theory.

nope. Although I agree that Max is the same person in all 4 movies, and he is not the feral kid in Fury Road, there are specific bits of Fury Road you are ignoring. Also you failed to remember the lore in Thunderdom and MM2. True timeline: 1978 Iran & Saudi Arabia go to war (happened in the real world, although it was resolved peacefully, in the Max World this war leaves the middle east in flames, Petroleum has just become a rare resource. 1983 The Main Force Patrol (MFP) is founded, as an attempt to maintain order as gangs are going wild across Australia. ~1987 MAD MAX happens. (going with 1987 because it makes the math easy. Max being 23 works as that was how old Mel was.) (between 1987-1990) last of government order has failed, people are fleeing the cities evidence in Mad Max 2 1990 Mad Max 2 (Max is 26) 1992 Global Nuclear war (clue in the Tell in Thunderdom as the timeline is told in the strange childish dialect) 1993 Flight Captain G. L. Walker trying to flee from somewhere with an Airline with families and children crashes near the Crack in the Earth. 2005 MM: Beyond Thunderdom (once again the kids establish the timeline beautifully. Max is 40) Something happens to Max which changes him... Max rebuilds the Interceptor 2024 MM Fury Road (Max Looks to be in his late thirties but he is 56. Lots of evidence to this, only old people remember TV, however Max's wife watched TV with his son. Max however doesn't give away his true age or what he remembers from when he was cop, because how can he be 37? note The actor was 37 at the time of filming, basically the same age as Mel Gibson) Something strange happened to Max, maybe when he was in the MFP, maybe Radiation, maybe something else, but he has regressed in age, is immune to Radiation and is basically unkillable now. BTW Immortan Joe has an interesting nickname in this regard. Maybe the government was testing anti-aging drugs, maybe Max was a by product of this testing, some time prior to the first film. Remember Max is unnaturally aggressive, infamous from it in the first film, the government spared no expenses on the MFP at first and treated it like a Military Police force. (once again first film as evidence.) The four horseman theory is actually kind of plausible, Max being the current incarnation of Death fits well with his character.

There's no time line. The first film is the only one we know actually went down the way we see it. The sequels are all legends told by the people who witnessed the events. This explains why max doesn't get hurt in furry road even though he should have died after furiosa runs them down and the car wrecks.

It's a shame Mel Gibson didn't play max in fury road as it would have made the timeline definitive as he would have aged further so the film would be set in a further future but he would have had to have had a different car from the Interceptor, that said I like Tom Hardy and just enjoy the film's for what they are.

Great work ! Good to see someone applying some intelligence to this discussion (which I'd though about but never to the same degree that you had). Really like the idea of Fury Road as a legend - it sort of happened, but maybe embellished or changed over time.

Nope. Max would have to be 50-60 years old by the time fury road rolls around (because A Furiosa would have to be born and raised by the biker girls at the same time as Joe gained power and built up the religion and B because Thunder dome takes place in 2018) . so the feral kid would have to be Max. the feral kid could just do a Kylo Ran where he finds as much as he can to look like Max. so even of the feral kid doesn't have an injury he would still make

+Shotana Studios The world in each mad max movie is very different in the first one they still had lawyers and actual policemen and it was more civilized. you hear nothing about the V8 religion witch by Fury Road seems to have taken over literally everything so its odd that its never brought up in previous films. and either way your theory still doesn't work because by the time that the V8 religion has fully integrated itself everywhere, in thunderdome max would need to be 60-70 years old whitch clearly isn't the case. As for the feral boy theory one thing that no one outside of Australia will pick up on is that Max's accent in fury road, isn't even Australian. Max in the previous films would never be as deranged and he had been alone for years on end by that point as well and he was still calm and calculated. Also that jacket isn't specific to Max, its a uniform which means quite a few of them would be mad and found, so the feral boy theory still works

Shotana Studios Yes but there is still clearly a gap. society devolves more and more as the films goes on. in fury road there are no signs of civility at all. in the first mad max like I said they still have lawyers. and again the age still doesn't sink up max would have to be 60 years old in both your theory and mine. also as an Aussie who grew up loving these films. Hardy's accent is not Aussie at all. its more NZ then anything and its not that hard to believe that the feral kid could find a police officers jacket? there were alot of them. Also the grunting thing is really convincing. Mel Gibson's Max was always calm and collected even if he was alone. Hardy is actually quite feral in his performance. but either way George Miller really doesn't care about continuity at all. and it shows. one thing that he doesn't seem to understand is that people talking in your film isn't a bad thing. and it doest give people enough to work with. also the back tattoo would have been seen in thunder dome

Re the 'Feral Kid Theory': it might have been different on the US release, but in the European (and presumably the rest of the world) the Narrator turns out to be the older Kid, talking about how he eventually led his Tribe.

The US version was the same as the rest of the world, except in regards to a weird version for TV back in the 80's...but even in our version it says that he went on to be the lead of the Great Northern Tribe. So yeah, it totally kills the idea that he could have been a Max copy.

Why is max so possessive in fury road??also part of that tattoo read out as no name. Also the scene in fury road when max kills the bullet farmer what is he carrying? It looks like a freaking boomerang. Lastly when max was strapped on the car with mask over his face look above him. Is that not the gyro captains hat and googles. Lastly why does max call himself he road warrior in the opening narrations?

I love this timeline! It makes it all make sense. But I’ve been thinking lately, if Fury Road is actually 30+ years later, then Max would obviously be in his 50s or 60s. What if he is? What if he is actually that old but he sees himself as a young man still? Veterans who experienced war never really move on from it, dealing with trauma and PTSD. Max has not been able to grow up, and he’s stuck living as if he was still in his 20s, constantly having to relive his past.

I just want to say you have done an awesome job here. I have for yrs. been a fan of all things Mad Max and love that there is others out there thinking about the same questions I have had regarding this series. I wanted to comment about a couple of things here. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned in the comments one thing that tells me Fury Road is before Thunderdome. The jacket stitching on Max's Shoulder is from the damage inflicted by the Mowhawker's claw in Road Warrior. I love Hardy as Max and feel he was an excellent choice to carry on Max in future films. I do however feel Thunderdome needs to be the final mention of Max with Mel Gibson finishing out the character on screen for us fans. The only exception is if someone wants to give us another comic book story or if Mel would come back one last time to finish out the character for us. Keep up with more videos like this one. Loved it!! God bless my friend!!

Only the original trilogy of films are directly linked, at one time Fury Road was meant to be a direct sequel to Beyond Thunderdome, but that was back in 2001 when Mel Gibson was going to reprise his role. The Fury Road film we got is a James Bond style sequel, same character, same setting, but not directly connected to the previous films' stories played by the different actor. If we get another Mad Max film with Tom Hardy, that could be a direct sequel/prequel to Fury Road, although I suspect that George Miller would rather have all new characters and no direct mention of the events and characters in Fury Road.

Late to the game, but i had a thought today after re watching road warrior. The end of road warrior was a chase scene involving Max driving a oil tanker. The plot of fury road is just a chase scene with max driving and even larger tanker. What if Fury Road was an exaggerated retelling of the road warrior legend, focused on that tanker chase.

in just expresing my opinion, and point of views, but i am still open to read and considers others. -i saw the movies as a child and as a teen, by my understanding, the chronological order in my teens for the movies was: 1.-mad max. 2.-mad max 2: road warrior 3.-mad max beyond the thunderdome since i first saw the trailers of fury road i came to reconsider this order, and after watching it and watchign the game(havent played it yet). but i always keep in mind the INTERCEPTOR, the state of it, the decaying of it 1.-mad max 2.-Road Warrior, 3.-mad max game 4.-fury road 5.-Beyond the Thunderdome(by now max is old and no longer has the interceptor) as george miller has said, there is no exact chronological order for the franchise, the order is more of fans, the order they choose to give it, and that max is a kind of a savior, a man(not exactly max rockatansky) who is doing the right thing in a world gone mad. but we can all agree that the legend of max starts after the first movie and Thunderdome the end -max from fury road cant be the wild kid, as he narrates the story of max who he holds in high regards and respects him, also he tells the story of max as an old man -your order: 1.-mad max 2.-the game 3.-road warrior 4.-Fury Road 5.-beyond the thunderdome 6.-retelling of Fury Road. Sound Interesting hope there is something to tell us more of the norse-seudo religion Immortan Joe practices,

I agree with your theory concerning the video game. In Mad Max he is completely alone, but in Road Warrior he has a dog named "Dog" at the beginning of the movie. At the start of Mad Max the video game, Max saves that same dog from being eaten by Chum Bucket. And "Dog" the dog remains with him until the middle of Road Warrior, where he is killed protecting Max. So its Mad Max, Mad Max: the game, Road Warrior, Fury Road, then Thunder Dome.

I like the idea that Fury Road is a passed down story and so not a 100% accurate retelling of the events. But, I kind of like the idea that Fury is just a retelling of not just the Road Warrior story, but like most legends it includes two or more events mushed together. some key details got lost, others get combined and even put into the wrong order. Minor things like the music box are kept but its details also get confused. Ultimately it doesn't really matter but this is a fun exercise.

Cool video but George has said several times that Fury Road is not a sequel to Thunderdome but a return to Max's world under different circumstances. The originally trilogy, comics, game and Fury Road are all set in different timelines/worlds. He said recently that Fury Road Max has an epic prequel story he really wants to tell someday. Originally Fury Road was a sequel to Thunderdome when Mel Gibson was still Max but over the years because of the delays the story changed a lot and ultimately ended up being set in its own timeline/world.

Actually the comics are not considered canon. They were meant to try to clean things up. But even they themselves are supposedly written by the same elders I speak off. They tell of the events as if they were legends. They muddle up the years and attempt to retcon even though the film's which are the real authority clash with them. George Miller always said they were never really meant to be a chronology ever since Thunderdome came out. In a way it is a revisit. This is how it will be possible for sequels to come out. Each film is meant to stand on their own.

The problem with the feral kid theory is that the end of road warrior explicitly tells us his fate. He became the new leader of papagallo's band, which became a new civilization that pushed beyond the technology of the old world. He did not grow up remaining feral.
