@@Alextrovert Because it's showing Peggy watching their sexism on the outside now. She's no longer part of the secretary crowd, but she's still familiar with that position. Inherently it's going to be different for her than the men. Especially since the men didn't get boxed in as easily for their looks (inside and outside their office). The Irene Dunn comment was sweet but outdated and probably not something Peggy would find that much comfort in. Like many earlier Peggy scenes this was about her navigating the balance of being in this field of work by herself.

@@hollytree3379 You comment is not really accurate. You seem to argue that it's sexism to compare woman to two styles of women of that time, and it is that way because men weren't boxed in by looks. But what you seem to forget is that men were qualified by their monetary power, and still are to be honest. Is this sexism too? The different evaluation the opposite sex does is sexism? Let's be honest. The concept of "sexism" has been stretched to a point were you can classify anything that can be considered "negative" done by a man to a woman as sexism.

the irony is the men who laugh at Peggy being unattractive i.e. Kinsey and Kenny both had made a pass at (well, sexually harassed, but they wouldn't see it that way) Peggy when she was new in the office - its essentially sour grapes. the ones who don't laugh at and rebuff the "peggy is unattractive" joke all never once crossed that line with her, though they had greater opportunity and power over Peggy (Don because he's her direct superior and Freddy because he was her mentor). i think this was completely intentional, and part of the commentary around sexual politics and objectification of women in this episode.

The great thing about this is that Don's two wives could be described as a Marilyn and a Jackie - but in reverse. Betty is a Jackie and Megan is a brunette Marilyn. Don is an inverted individual so therefore so is his taste in spouses. Always against the grain, even in intimacy.

Copywriters could and did put campaigns that didn't pan out in their portfolio all the time. If the art/photography has already been made for the copy, even better. The copy that Don snuck into the package for the fur coat that Roger bought Joan had copy that Don had made up that had never gone to print because Don was still just working at the fur store. It's totally appropriate, depending on the situation (like almost everything). The same rules apply to calling a guy "sweetheart" if you're a woman, or a gay guy, or a trans, or whatever. Did you read the situation correctly and determine that the person you intend to call "sweetheart" is going to be cool with it? If yes, then totally do it. If not, well, obviously don't. Not sure? Don't. Wait, are you tempted to whine about it being unfair that you're unsure? Shut up. Just don't if so. This is easy and should not require instruction.

I don't imagine all women wear one for comfort. Otherwise there wouldn't be a market for special ones that shape the mound of fat into something socially pleasing--and cost many times more. Do men wear something structural to carry their pot belly?
@misssmisssymaria

Albert Gaspar Bras are not made for comfort, they’re supposed to be a tad uncomfortable. And, if we, women, have to wear one, it might as well wear one that’s pretty. Also, there are girdles for men, they’re made in the shape of a tank top. Men could wear one if they wanted
@albertgaspar627
@albertgaspar627 4 жыл бұрын
@@misssmisssymaria so why do you think they are "supposed" to be uncomfortable? I understand cheap garments made for price rather than comfort, but good products should be as comfortable as possible. I do agree, many clothes choices are for vanity. There is an old saying that a man walks into a bar and searches for the most beautiful woman to flirt with. When a woman walks into a bar, she too looks for the most beautiful woman--to see her competition. Of course, not everyone is looking for attention. Men do have girdle options. They are typically used for vanity or for support of bad backs. A walk thru any crowd can spot the amount of men not bothering to wear one, for either reason.

Peggy threatens the male dominated office. The boys didn't know how to address her taking on the role of a man other than to insult her. Which is what guys do to their friends. But it's a strange mix of the two roles. Do you treat female co-workers like you treat your girlfriends or do you treat them like your buddies? The same can be said in today's office.

Women should understand inappropriate comments are a double standard. Women can get away with them far easier today than men. Once, in a conference room, two female colleagues suggested I be the meat in the sandwich. Everyone heard it and no one said or did anything. I found it highly inappropriate for the workplace and if the tables were reversed, I would have been shitcanned.

The unfortunate reality is that women complain more, and they are also in male dominated workplaces more often. We have to start holding women accountable for posterity’s sake if nothing else. This isn’t to say that they won’t just write off or deny the comments they made about you or another man tomorrow.
