I think this is Lane's peak on the show. The character is repeatedly disrespected and beaten down by everyone around him (his bosses in Britain, his dad with the cane, his wife's demands, never really having a respected role in SCDP). He continually gets denied anything and everything he ever tries to obtain. Finally, and for only one moment, Lane took charge, fought back (literally and figuratively), and took control of his life. The way he slams the door open and saunters off is perfect.

I think Lane's problem is he DIDN'T really ever try to obtain things. He was an intelligent, competent man who was "good at doing what he was told." However, he was never satisfied with what obedience alone will get a man. He wanted the things that require ambition, but he lacked either the courage or the will to become ambitious.

I don't think he's underrated character. I've read a lot of forums and comments from fans who really loved him. However, I think Lane Pryce is underappreciated. He was very essential to the company from its rebirth and also he does his job seriously. Cooper is ok but he tolerates unprofessional actions.

@@robbrown3941 Im the only one in the Mad Men fandom that never wanted to see Pete punched out. I like that afterwards he took his beating like a man, not like the pussy everybody makes him out to be. His only question was 'why cant we all be friends'? The only moment I truly hated Pete is when he made Peggy cry, when she asked him to dance the Twist with him in Season 1. Pete matured as a character as the show went on. And he totally owns Season 5. This episode, which should be called MATT WEINER HATES PETER CAMPBELL, is the complete emasculation of Pete. Honestly, I dont know how Pete doesnt commit suicide by the end of that episode. And The Other Woman, the MASTERPIECE of Season 5 where Joan famously prostitutes herself for the firm, and her partnership stake. It was Pete at his flimsiest, oily worst, that proposed the idea to Joan. Pete was a great character.

This is one of those situations that comes up and it isn't about "win vs lose" . The bigger or better fighter is probably going to win but what is really revealed about both is their Character in how they react during and after ward. Neither man whines, neither man shows cowardice and both come away with the viewer's respect afterward.

Its just a shame they didnt do more research on how that fighting stance worked. In practice the extended arm would be used for straight jabs to keep the other guy at a comfortable distance. Hed be a lot more mobile and only throw rights when the opponent drops his guard or charges in. Looks pretty clumsy here but IRL one of those old fisticuffs guys would tune you up proper without letting you get close. They also commonly threw their opponents, which was legal-its why fisticuff guys didnt clinch.

I love Mad Men it’s absolutely my favourite show of all time (even above Sopranos which is also great). As a Brit, I loved the way the characters mercilessly take the piss out of us (the exchange between Joan and John Hooker on the Profumo affair was priceless…. And Roger, “Cup of what?”) but I must admit I felt a significant amount of pride at this scene. Well done Lane!

God, I loved this! Joan said it best when she told Lane that everyone there had wanted to punch Pete's lights out and she was right. Pete Campbell is such a weasel and a smart-ass; was great to see someone finally take him down a notch or two. And yes, I thought it was fabulous when Roger lit up a smoke as soon as Don drew the curtains. Way to go, Lane!

I just can't stop watching Jon Hamm through this whole scene. Don Draper has such an empathy for other wounded people, for dysfunctional people, but he's also a bastard at heart. All of that comes through in half seconds of screen time, in the smallest gesture and expression. He disgusted by both men, and utterly sympathetic to both at the same time.
