I think this is Lane's peak on the show. The character is repeatedly disrespected and beaten down by everyone around him (his bosses in Britain, his dad with the cane, his wife's demands, never really having a respected role in SCDP). He continually gets denied anything and everything he ever tries to obtain. Finally, and for only one moment, Lane took charge, fought back (literally and figuratively), and took control of his life. The way he slams the door open and saunters off is perfect.

And you couldn't ask for a better person on the receiving end of it than Peter lol

I think Lane's problem is he DIDN'T really ever try to obtain things. He was an intelligent, competent man who was "good at doing what he was told." However, he was never satisfied with what obedience alone will get a man. He wanted the things that require ambition, but he lacked either the courage or the will to become ambitious.

And he totally owns Season 5. This episode, which should be called MATT WEINER HATES PETER CAMPBELL, is the complete emasculation of Pete. Honestly, I dont know how Pete doesnt commit suicide by the end of that episode. Its just a shame they didnt do more research on how that fighting stance worked. In practice the extended arm would be used for straight jabs to keep the other guy at a comfortable distance. Hed be a lot more mobile and only throw rights when the opponent drops his guard or charges in. Looks pretty clumsy here but IRL one of those old fisticuffs guys would tune you up proper without letting you get close. They also commonly threw their opponents, which was legal-its why fisticuff guys didnt clinch.

I love how some men actually takes fighting words seriously and resolve the matter there by simply fighting. Moving on after a fair fight is always a good decision.

The dialogue, Roger's great one liners and Lane's fabulous delivery aside what I really like about this scene is the attention to sartorial detail: even at the height of passion Lane remembers to remove and fold his jacket correctly at 0:33 and Pete tucking his tie into the shirt at 1:04 ?? Just wonderful
