I just wanted to say something; I've been accused of being oblivious to certain vital plot points in the movie because I say ' I have no idea why it took so long for the Siren's to surface.' The movie says from the beginning that the sirens came to the attention of Twilight because thy went to the school as a result of Equestrian Magic. I get that. What I meant was, the sirens were invented for this movie, were never mentioned in the series and have never surfaced before. They were invented specifically for the plot of this movie. This is why I said; 'PLOT CONVENIENCE!' Villains invented purely for this story and were never made a part of the world prior to this. This is something that happens over and over again in MLP; villains invented for the convenience of a particular episode. They're never written into the running narrative of the show prior to the their appearance. In every episode of MLP that introduces a new villain the episode has to spend time giving vital exposition dialog, usually from Princess Exposition herself, or from a book from the Library. It's called 'writer's convenience.' They may become reoccurring characters AFTERWARDS but we're still to have a reoccurring villain in this show. (Discord is an anti-hero so doesn't come under this category) Perhaps I should have made this clearer. I just don't want to be accused of being oblivious or ignorant to this movie, especially when you have to watch a movie almost ten times while writing and editing a review as long as this.

1. i hardly see how that matters to anything. cheese sandwich existed solely for the point of his episode and wasnt explained until the end. for that reason and that reason alone does it make him a bad character until he was explained? what about pinkie pie, she just showed up and wasnt explained for most of the first season, does that make her a plot convince up until then? did that make her a bad character up until then? why should a character's justification for existing be their soul measure of quality? 2. that is incorrect, the comic that showed sirens existed as creatures came out before this movie aired.

Headcanon Alert! I think the reason it took so long for the sirens to surface is because there is a difference in the flow of time between the two worlds. It would explain why it's been about 3 years since sunset shimmer arrived(I assume since she won the fall formal the past 3 years) And she was banished a while before twilight became celestia's pupil as a young filly and she is now an adult where'as sunset shimmer has hardly aged. The sirens may have only been there for a decade or even less, while a thousand years have passed in equestria. I think it might also be similar to the digimon world's flow. Which is getting closer to the real worlds flow due to more and more people entering it. It could be that when starswirl banished them, a century in equestria was a few days, then when sunset shimmer arrived a year was a few months, and now that twilights there it's nearing equilibrium. F.y.i. I also just watched interstellar, so I've got science mumbo-jumbo on the brain.

Brent Ramsten Cheese IS a bad character. Period. and no one was explained until they were explained. That's different from inventing a race, or character, because you need it to exist at the moment. As for the comics, no, no it didn't. While yes, a siren was introduced, it was nothing like the Dazzlings. It was a kind-hearted, if a bit...over bearing...creature who, IIRC, couldn't speak. And, again, IIRC, it had no gem. It was happenstance. Beyond that, the comics are a teteritary product, which, while high quality and I HIGHLY recommend to all, are questionably canon at best, and shouldn't be considered in when it comes to the films/show. After all, if the show started doing whole plotlines that revolved around the bookworm, fans would riot. A reference or a nod is fine, but that's it. On a personal note, fecking comics portraying Chrssy as psychotically evil..How could they miss the mark that hard?

The difference between locking Tirek in Tartarus and the Sirens is that Tirek requires a certain level of power to be in his possession before he can acquire more from others. The Sirens seem to have no such need and can take negative energy from anyone near them. Unsurprisingly, this would probably be in great supply in a place like Tartarus. Also, the pendants seemed to have been a part of their bodies in their natural forms, the necklace version seems to only apply in the human world.

I just feel like saying here, I feel like Starswirl just didn't care. I imagine that he was ambitious, and maybe even passionate about learning and magic, but he didn't relate to other ponies or beings, expressed by the fact that he couldn't wrap his head around the magic of friendship. As I've seen others say, he probably couldn't take the sirens pendants because in that form they were a part of their body, and they were too powerful to kill--the show wouldn't explicitly say that--so he just threw them into a different dimension. He probably had an inkling about what was there, and knew that they would change forms to become something less dangerous, but his main concern was probably just to get them out of his world so they wouldn't cause him any more trouble, and it would get him brownie points with the locals. All that likely mattered to a pony like Starswirl was that they were gone and wouldn't be coming back, at least not in his lifetime. This isn't criticism; I just want to get that out there since this is one of my favorite review channels. Also, I would assume he would keep the sirens away from Tirek since he was manipulative and likely could have figured out a way to escape with the sirens there, and sooner. I won't deny, however, that they may have just conveniently forgot about that for the sake of the movie.

They were surfacing than because they saw the rainbows and stuff from when the human mane 6 defeated Sunset Shimmer, they sensed the equestrian magic and thus, went after it. They can't really cause much damage with non-equestrian magic, so they wouldn't have appeared on the radar at any point before hand. I'm assuming they left that "plot-hole" there for the fans to figure out. .-. Instead of having everything explained, they may have just left things to have us figure it out. Just a theory. Don't scold me for it.

Mad Munchkin It wasn't so much explained, as the context was presented. Their complaining seems to suggest that they DID regularly use their powers, and that there was nothing to struggle for on the world they were exiled to. Then, a tangible goal drops right in their laps, and they go get it. The "no offense," I think, wasn't meant as a joke. It was their way of showing us how Sunset feels, just in case the glares and exclusion weren't enough. It also showed us Sunset's effort to redeem herself. As you said, patience she's got. I believe the "gems" were once part of their bodies, and the journey to earth transformed them into talismans, because people with magical gems in their chests just aren't a thing. If I had to guess, they were exiled to earth because Starswirl was genre-savvy enough to know that if he threw 'em in Tartarus, they'd just sing Cerberus to sleep. I also LIKED that they had Twilight try and hijack the film, only to fail, with Sunset taking the movie back, TWICE, and saving the day. Twilight needed a reminder that being a leader doesn't mean solving the problems yourself, and telling others how to do it. She needs to rely more on her friends. It also gives us the chance to compare her strengths with Sunset's. Sunset is more perceptive, during her time as a bully, she taught herself to see small problems that can be exploited. She's able to see things, socially, that her friends can't. On the other hand, Twilight is prone to bursts of inspiration, suddenly figuring out just the right thing to do, when the feces is flung fanward. I believe someone else has explained why the musicorn isn't a deus ex machina. We're told as soon as Twilight comes in, that magic will unleash the powers of harmony. In fact, you could even call it the payoff to the chekov's gun of their transformation whenever they play music. Now, as to an explanation, well, it's magic. In equestria, friendship literally charges them up to fire a big friendship spell.

I don't mean to be rude or anything but... this is kinda like the Celestia and Tirek situation. When Starswirl needed to banish the Sirens he did it because things were in immediate danger and there was nothing else he could do... Kinda like Celestia gave all the alicorn power to twilight... because she didn't know what else to do . Also, theres the fact that starswirl most likely did not know where they would be banished... he just found a portal to another place where he could banish these powerful, mind controlling sirens so he acted immediately to save equestria. Sure its not mentioned in the show but its something u have to think about. It's like asking someone to carefully consider every move when a hurricane is at u, despite it being in your best interest you would take the first sign of salvation without thinking of the later concquences so you and who ever is with you can live another day

I suggest reading the 'Reflections' arc of the comics. It shows that Starswirl created the mirror portals. There are two types. The one we know functions off the power and phases of the moon. The other type uses magic to open and close the portal at will. Starswirl and Celestia found that the more they used a portal of the second type, the closer the two worlds become, so that changes to somepony on one side also affects that same pony in the other world. Therefore Starswirl decided to seal the portal to inverse!Equestria. This portal is a prototype for the one they use in the movies.

As far as their necklaces go it may just be the simple style they're portrayed in from the book but to me it looks like the sirens have the gems growing out of their body. It's a part of them and since there is no "Equestrian Magic" in the mirror world you can't have girls walking around looking like Steven Universe Gem cosplayers, so the same thing that made hoofs into hands made gems growing out of their chests into a piece of jewelry. The reason they're probably so paranoid about loosing their gem in their "human" forms is because they probably KNOW that they will loose their powers along with them.

I have read your summary, and have some insight to offer. I might come off as blunt, maybe even rude, but I think it's for the best that I remain honest. - Age is such a relative term - we don't even know the age of the Mane 6 -, it's best to go with broad terms such as "teen" or "young adult". - The personality should include flaws. One of the great things about MLP is that the Mane 6 aren't perfect all the time. It'd be unnatural if they were, so for a well rounded character, neither should your OC be. - Background should include as little show-established characters as possible - if for no other reason that show canon could negate your very existence -, and friendships to main characters should be especially avoided. Knowing AJ and Pinkie and having a working relationship is OK, but being friends with them is stretching it a bit far. If you want good character insertion in an established story, read Fallout: Equestria and Project Horizons. - As far as coloring goes, I don't think dark blue is a good choice to begin with. Dark colors, if used at all, lend themselves to powerful body types and sinister characters. I can think of only two show ponies with dark coats - Luna/Nightmare Moon and Thunderlane. Even so, the dark coat would clash somewhat fierce with the pink mane and tail. You should generally go with similar colors, either in spectrum (Twilight, Pinkie) or in intensity (Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy). The only exception is black, white and various shades of grey. Another problem is the cutie mark: purple on dark blue would blend in too much. You can see the effects of non color-coordinated cutie marks in Magical Mystery Cure - especially on AJ and Dashie. If you want to keep the dark blue coat, I'd recommend a green gem - emeralds or jade are a thing. All in all, a link to a picture of your OC would be helpful. - Speaking of cutie marks: they normally represent things the pony is good at doing or has an affinity to, not broad character traits. And why they may be open to some interpretation, they should be more closely tied to the things the pony is meant to do. - As for the planned story: doing something so similar to the original characters in what is basically the same setting (getting Elements, defeating evil) is unimaginative at best. Upstaging them at their own game is just plain lame. Now I don't say that either the OC or the story are unsalvagable - you obviously put a lot of effort into them -, but you might want to rethink some things.

I'm actually much happier that they bothered to bring up the fact that Sunset was an evil she-demon and have everyone react believably paranoid about her rather than just glossing over it and having everyone magically love her for no reason off-screen. Heck, the entire running theme of Rainbow Rocks is Sunset becoming a new person and casting off her past, both socially and psychologically.

star swirl sent them there because there is no magic. Until Twilight came through with the crown, the crown allowed magic to "whisper" through to that world. From that their amulets soaked in that magic. It was also touched upon at the end of the movie.

I don't know if it's just me…… But does anyone else think that the dazzling's songs are more memorable and catchier then the ones is that twilight and Company play with the exception of the opening theme , Shine like rainbows, and better than ever… Just me… I get it

the door scene just i love it its interruptive but its just as funny as the knock knock joke the interrupting cow honestly as long as whoever is watching is on board with the joke then its still funny some people can find it obnoxious and over use is something to be considered but hey its a joke and its funny and its meant to be repeated a few times also musicorn "it was just a light show" seems to work for every other movie XD

On the Sirens: It is my theory that the Sirens could not be contained or have their powers taken away without killing them outright. They are Emotovores, kind of like the Changelings. They feed on the excess energy of hatred, which they have the power to add to. This ability is less functional in a world with less loose emotional energy floating around, so their powers could be weakened without stripping them of them all together and starving them to death (It isn't that kind of show). Why they are Surfacing now: Sunset Shimmer showed up about 2 years ago, bringing the first hints of Equestrian magic with her. Then she brought the Element of Magic itself through, and that magic was focused through her and the others of the human mane six to create a huge, highly visible burst of Magic, which is clearly shown to draw their attention to the Magic that was left behind, Sunset and the Mane Five. On the "No offense" lines: This actually is part of building toward the climax. It shows that Sunset Shimmer is, even amongst her friends, constantly being reminded of what she did before she started learning about friendship. It as well as Rainbow Dash's arrogance, and the other issues that the Human Mane six have throughout the movie, sets up the divisions that the Sirens intended to split open to get at their magic. On Twilight: Just because she is in the movie as a main character, with her own struggles, does not mean that she is Hijacking the movie. Sunset is still there, with her own struggles, but Sunset's arc is *about* being pushed to the side and not feeling like she is good enough or important enough. Twilight's struggle, on the other hand, is about remembering that she does not have to be perfect. There is narrative purpose here. It all ties back into the divisions they have to fix for the final scene. Fan Pandering: Fan Pandering is when the introduction of something the fans like actually takes away from the rest of the plot. It does not here. Maud gives Twilight and Sunset something else to bond over, beginning to bridge the gaps between them, until each of their respective issues reasserts itself, Silencing Sunset and isolating Twilight. Again, it is a Narrative thing. Deus ex Machina: The magic here is set up in advance as the way to solve the problem. Figuring out how to make it work is the main reason for Twilight's struggle, thus it does not fit the "Unexpected" criteria to make it a proper Deus ex Machina. Musicorn: I prefer "Epicorn" myself. Why am I talking so much in the comments? Because AntonyC was in this review, and for some reason, I always feel the need to develop a counter for everything he has to say.
