Wow! I just checked out your channel and it is AMAZING! Your camera and editing work is stellar too. I can learn so much about filming ideas watching your shows. Maybe you'll consider doing a steelhead fishing video on the Mad next season? Mine is just a bare bones basic intro to those who know nothing about steelhead fishing. But, what I think a lot of locals would appreciate is one with more details like yours - I"d love to see that! Keep up the great work, and you have a new fan!

Lived in Eureka in the 80's into the mid 90's. Grew up fishing that section in the spring for steelhead with my dad. Thanks for the memories!!!

So glad to hear you appreciated it! It was a rough fishing year there this year, the river was high and muddy most of the time. Hope you get a chance to visit Humboldt sometime!

Oh, so glad it was helpful. It's just the bare basics I wish someone had told me when I first started 3 years ago! And, if catching fish is the main goal, fishing for surf perch, or trout in one of the lagoons is the way to go. Humboldt has so many amazing fishing options! What a great place to live, eh???

Oh yea - I know..I hear that alot LOL. I actually do fish that way though ever since I was a kid and it's just my habit. I know it's because I started out as a kid on nothing but bait casting reels, and it just carried over to spinning rods. Oh well, it works for me. I went out steelhead fishing today for a few hours, but nothing,,,,again!

Ideal conditions and place to use a A #4 Spin-n-Glo particularly with the muddy water. The Spin-n glow in Orange and white has worked for decades in this area however Chartreuse and pink also work.. Finessing the Spin-Glo by Larry Ellis, from Salmon,Trout,Steelheader magazine is free online and explains everything you need to know.

So, when is someone who knows alot more about Mad River Steelhead going to make a vid? All it takes is an inexpensive go pro cam and a $60 edit program (Movavi) - that's all I use. I'd love to see that.

Plus, I'll help if you run into any filming or editing glitches. I just learned how to work the cam and edit program on You-Tube diy videos a few months ago. I would love seeing a Mad River steelhead video by someone who really has the experience and knowledge.

I've been fishing for them for 3 seasons now and not landed one. I've read every book at the library, coaching at the fishing stores, on line research, and go out average of 10x a season, 2 hours each time. In all that time, I had one big one on the line that I lost - nothing else except, maybe bites. So, when I finally do catch one - it will be hard earned!!

Ok number one !! You were holding the rod upside down the reel always goes on the bottom with spinning rods... number two when it’s rained on the mad use a black spinner!! Or night crawler.. you have to give the mad two to three days after to. Toss roe.... and finally the hatchery.. the Hatchery gets a contribution from steelhead pale ale and mad river brewing company as well as other sources all people who are there working to help sustain our future enjoyment of this outdoor recreational activity are all VOLUNTEERS!!!!! That’s right!! 100 percent accurate. These people are VOLUNTEERING THEIR TIME TO SPAWN AND HATCH THE FUTURE RUNS... and are N O T P A I D

Wow! Didn't know the hatchery workers are volunteers! Do you think they'd be open to being interviewed and filming some of the process in the next Fall run? Yea - I hear from friends that I fish with the reel upside down. But, I've done it that way since I was a kid, and feel comfortable with it. I like to keep my left thumb on the line, when it's on top to feel nibbles. Just a weird fishing quirk of mine. Thanks for those other tips!

Also, I think another reason is that I mainly ocean fish with a big bait casting reel, and am used to keeping it on top to untangle the usual snarls after casts. So, I keep the spin reel on top (which I use less frequently) so I can keep my reactions more automatic.
