My father served on 9 different LCI (L) during the war. He was the radio operator for the Flotilla commander so wherever the admiral went he followed and bounced from LCI to LCI. Near the end of the war, he was transferred to the USS Queens APA 103 which he claimed was at least a proper sea going vessel. The LCIs being flat bottomed did not travel well on the open seas. If you want to know more about these ships of the so-called "Water Bug Navy" the book HEART OF HELL is a great place to start. My father served on one of those LCI that was deploying UTD men into Iwo Jima. He was transferred off just before the landing the radioman that replaced him was killed. I have a logbook from LCI (L) 10?? and will gladly give it to the museum if I can find it.

Holy cow, Batman! 20 mm canons, not machine guns. We used to go to the Samoa Cook house back in the '70s when I was at Humboldt State. That picture of the crews mess shows sailors who are from another navy, not Americans. Wrong uniforms! And there's a bottle of grogg on the table. Wait. Infantry OR Marines? What do you think Marines are? I guess you meant SOLDIERS or Marines... We call the "steering wheel" the helm. No steering gear???
@humboldtoutdoors60828 күн бұрын
Could you find us a more precisely historical accurate mess image or two? We would love to re-edit the master that airs on our Humboldt community access station. (you can send through our "Humboldt Outdoors" fb channel). The original ship had a steering lever, but not the wheel, which was added later. We'll let John know about the Marines vs Infantry and 20 mm canons - he's a coast guard vet. Thanks for all the great detail! We 4 who volunteer to make these videos don't have a military background so appreciate learning more.
@humboldtoutdoors60828 күн бұрын
Could you also take a look at our other episode with WWII info to see if we have images that match? (Samoa Bunkers - look in our episode list) If you find any inaccurate images,, could you find us more historically accurate images to replace them in our masters we air on Humboldt's community access TV? We're all volunteer, and would appreciate your military expertise help!

It is! But ideal conditions are ephemeral. We rafted it a few days ago, and didn't need to drag the rafts over any shallow spots. But, probably in a week , or two or three, the raft will need to be dragged over several shallow spots.

I don't know about the tombstone you were showing but I can tell you for a fact that Hollis James was on the cemetery board of directors and he made about 100 markers for graves that had no markers. They were all made out of old growth redwood and were carved I believe with a router of some kind. This would have been in the 60s -70s. many were set up but there was a stack of them that were never put out. I do not know what happened to them. Please feel free to contact me if you wish, I have quite a bit of history about the cemetery many of my family members are buried there.

Keep up the good work shipmates! I am crew on your sister ship in Portland OR USS LCI(L)-713. I knew Doc Davis and miss him being gone. You guys have your work cut out for you. The ship looks much better than it did when I visited her while she was still afloat back in May 2014. I remember meeting Leeroy and John was there too. If you guys need something we can do to help just let us know what you need and we may be able to help. I know the work looks so overwhelming but remember that it is like moving a mountain....you start by moving one shovel at a time. Jerry
