It took me the majority of my life to acknowledge & understand my various mental illnesses, & part of that is that I'm emotionally disconnected from others, I'm not very loving, I don't touch people much, I don't like to be touched, & my main emotions are anger & sorrow, both of which can be intense. I struggled for decades because I couldn't understand why other people would say one thing, then do another, or why they claimed to support me & be a friend, but then do something shitty, I held people to pretty unrealistic standards in some cases or I just didn't care at all about them. I could go into much more detail, but I'm really just talking about my life now which is very isolated, I spend most of my time by myself, with only online interactions, & most of them are deliberately distant & stress free. I am very close with my daughter & I work at being more natural with my grandkids so they understand that I do care about them deeply, its just not really how most people operate. I'm perfectly happy by myself, even prefer it if I can. And I don't want to really support the idea that "you have to be crazy" to be this way, & I talk a lot about why I'm legally mentally disabled vs the social system we live in, for examples like I "can't keep a job," which makes my disability legal but if we talked about why I lost those previous jobs, you'd agree that I was often right, like trying to encourage other employees to organize & support each other so we'd get better treatment, or because if I saw a manager doing something unacceptable to another employee, I can't keep my mouth shut, & it could be seen as more of a question, am I mentally unstable, or am I just incapable of accepting things that most of us agree are wrong but learn to live with?

I love how giddy you two get over these types of old stories. It’s so fun to me that so many people in the UK enjoy tales of the American Wild West, frontier stories, etc. I had a good friend from Scotland for years and we met when he walked up with other friends while I was playing Johnny Cash on my guitar on my porch… he proceeded to sing the entire song in his Scottish accent Bc his dad only listened to American outlaw country growing up lol. Its kinda nice having “small world” connections like that 🥰

i live in New Mexico, USA, and i can assure you the old west still exists. around 5 years ago i lived on a ranch in Tajique, New Mexico, around 40 miles south of Albuquerque. in the Manzano Mountain foothills, Tajique consists of a small store with a gas pump, a barber shop, a large old adobe (mud brick) house which was built in 1630 and a small Catholic church next to that with a small graveyard. (i am a 64 year old woman, by the way) Tajique is populated by descendants of the original recipients of Spanish land grants. some of the "land grant" communities are in many ways a law unto themselves and they fiercely protect the sovereignty of their land. they can be seriously scary people. Tajique isn't nearly as bad as Chilili. i had walked over to the little store one day and when i got to the counter i reached for my wallet but it was deep in my carpenter pants pocket, underneath my .45 pistol, so i pulled out my pistol and slapped it down onto the counter, whereupon the shop owner grabbed his own .45 and slapped it down on the counter; the vaquero standing behind me then pulled his 9mm pistol and slapped it down as well. we all then laughed ourselves silly. most of the ranch owners down there grew cash crops of Marijuana, which was still illegal and if you stumbled upon a field of that you would, in all likelihood, be shot.

The way he treated the local First Nations people when they came to talk to him leads me to believe that he really did tamper with their traps. He probably thought he could drive them away from the area, so he could trap there. For someone who wanted to be left alone he sure did screw with other people who just wanted to be left alone. There was also more to the sailor who threw himself overboard after trying to sail around the world. He entered the race to win a bet which would save him from bankruptcy. That was the real reason for his anxiety and forging of his ship's logs.

I feel like Keith has been spying on my life. Wine in the shower is my thing. And it even started out as a team sport for me. My roommate and I both worked at the same place, and one night after work got out late, we both were running late to a friend's gathering. So we decided to take our customary after work drink into the shower and just shower together to save time. Since then, a chilled glass of white wine in a hot shower is my go-to after work de-stresser. If this does become an Olympic event, I have had 10+ years of training. I'm pretty sure I could get a medal. 🍷🥇 I'm glad you're safe from your fall, though, Keith. Remember to plant at least one foot firmly.

Isolation thought: I’m a dog sitter. One of my clients lives in the woods, has two dogs that can’t be left on their own at all, my car’s not big enough for them, and unfortunately I don’t have anyone who can easily visit me while I stay there. I’m also made very anxious by phone calls…. The longest stint I’ve done there was two weeks. By the end of it I was practically begging to do something as acutely social as ordering a coffee in a cafe. my depression meds had to be nearly doubled in strength after that time too. Now, when I stay there, I have to have certain things in place to stop my mental health from deteriorating. As much as I adore dogs, they can’t substitute human contact.

24:11 ..I have heard this story before, not in such an entertaining way of course 😜 But anecdotally.. being alone is just fine, if you’re someone who is fine with your own company, I’m not exactly referring to today’s version of an “introvert” since it’s gotten a different slant these days, rather like ‘nerd’ has changed since I was a kid..((I’m officially ‘old’ on paper)) I’m not sure if an audience raised in a time when electronics are everywhere and it’s normal to have a screen in front of you can really understand how DIFFERENT it is compared to the older generations.. ((I’m speaking very generally here, I know that)) Personally, I grew up before the internet, before cellphones were ‘normal’.. and my mom being a leftover hippie did not allow a television in the house until I was about 15-16yrs old.. and even then, “cable” was not part of the package.. As such, I grew up with my nose in books and as an only child, I spent a LOT of time alone.. used to wander off alone into actual woods with bears and bobcats as a 8yr old on up into my adulthood.. I go camping alone by choice.. and I’m not falling all over myself to chat with anyone I find.. I think a lot of the ability to be isolated is entirely dependent on the individual.. and in the days of the 1920s-30’s being away from artificial noise like radios was the norm.. so on one hand, the inclination to interact socially was a much bigger part of society overall, if someone had “issues” and wanted to be isolated, they could go much longer than the average person before they were overwhelmed by any of it.. but as was said in the podcast already, the fact that he was SO antisocial would have been a VERY noticeable issue for the people who bumped into him.. especially when the actual social CODE of living wild like he did “requires” him to be an open and helpful neighbor.. The whole story is just absurd frankly 😛.. a classic example of how utterly STUBBORN some men can be, especially in that era.. 😂 ..example.. I’ve been asking my BF if he ASKED his dad why he’s being SO bitccy lately, he says “I know why” .. I said again, did you ask HIM why? .. “no, I know why, he’s being a 🤬” … …ok.. so he’s mad and won’t say why really and you won’t ASK.. and this has been going on for how long?? 🤦♀️🤦♀️ Lol 😂 stubborn standoff continues!.. Won’t go to the damn dr either 🙄 … STUBBORN.. & I know it’s not ALL men, but the ones I knew who were alive in the 1930s, absolutely could be unbearably stubborn, because it was an age of machismo and men being stoic and strong 🙄 and it was unacceptable to back down from a confrontation, especially if you were law enforcement.. recipe for disaster.. 😅
