The first time that I saw Donnie Darko, I fell in love with this version of the song. The stripped down arrangement and slower tempo makes this more powerful that the Tears For Fears version... at least to me.

This is a song of depression. Those who not depressed do not understand the depths of sorrow that one can sink to. This song shares just some of the feeling.

The cover was made *for* the movie, in 2001. It's pretty fitting considering the story in the movie, and the timing that the movie came out.

@@MaddyReactionsThe original song from Tears for Fears is a more upbeat song probably to be sarcastic. This song became famous all over again when this version came out in the movie Donnie Darko

@StMichael7 The Tears version is unsettling and a bit chaotic. Truly a mad world, someone who is struggling inside and in their head, Gary Jules turned it into sad world, slowly the song down amd now everyone who covers the song does a slow somber version. That's why I like Tears version because, I find that opbeat tempo goes with the inner anguish the person in feeling

@@gamexsimmonds3581 The Tears For Fears version feels more like they're reveling in their misery and the misery of others, while this version it feels more lonely and desperate.

If this depressed you because of “Gears”, you may not want to watch the movie “Donnie Darko”, where this cover version initially caught the wind and became well-known. The movie is understandable but prolly not the first time you watch it.

It has been said, that quite often it is the most depressed people who make the best artists. It has also been said that depression can be routed in a lack of expression. So the creation of works such as this song can actually be therapeutic both for the artists & those who can identify with feeling the same way at times. They are vicariously allowed to sing along and release those thoughts & emotions. This way they would not be allowed to become further suppressed & welling in that manner. Even to the extent of them becoming overwhelming, which could lead to obvious devastating effects. Anyway, all that aside, 😂. Tears for Fears were the originals of this one & as an 80's teen were one of my favorite groups. Along with other groups like U2, R.E.M., INXS, Faith no more, The Pixies...who all were laying the ground work for what would become catagororised as "alternative rock". Which eventually & ironically would become so popular that it actually became mainstream.😅

According to the songwriter, he and Curt had recently read "Primal Scream" a book by Dr. Janov. Pop psychology in the vein of Gestalt, it advocated the release you get from screaming or crying, etc.. It further postulated that dreams served this purpose, allowing you to find resolution of emotional conflict in your dreams. A step further means very emotional, scary, or traumatic dreams are actually the best for your overall mental health. Roland said he was referring to this angle, not wishing or advocating death.

Thanks for reacting to this Maddy, it's a good version of a great song, performed and written by Tears for Fears. One of my favourite T-shirts is the lyrics to this song using colourful symbols, picked up when TfF played Blenheim Palace. Their version is more upbeat. Oh, whilst I'm recommending Tears for Fears, Woman in Chains is a masterpiece video and song!

Okay, i have to say this. It's okay to be sad ! Being sad and letting ourselves be swormed by emotion and it is healhty. Its your brain telling you that he is max out. Its also important to know that when you done letting things out, you body release dopamine naturally to balance everything up. You seem so scared of sadness, its kinda ... sad
