M.A.D. World - Episode 3: Revolution | History Documentary
Watch 'M.A.D. World - Episode 4' here: • MAD World - The Histor...
In this episode:
By the mid-1950s, there is a build-up of military bases on both sides of the iron curtain. A few years later, the revolution puts a Communist dictatorship on the USA’s doorstep in Cuba. The Space Race begins with the launch of Sputnik. Almost overnight, the Soviet Union seals off West Berlin with the building of the Berlin Wall.
'M.A.D. World' takes a close look at the last time we were threatened by the might of world superpowers: The Cold War. For over forty years the entire world stood on the brink of annihilation, as the horrors of World War II ended and a new kind of global war began, when the push of a single button could trigger all-out nuclear war. 'M.A.D. World' examines how the world was changed forever by the Cold War. Over eight episodes, remarkable footage from the time shows how the build-up of nuclear arms and the mistrust between West and East instilled terror across the globe. First-hand accounts bring the stories to life as we talk to pilots drilled to drop the bomb, families are torn apart by the Iron Curtain, and escaped dissidents who lived in fear of torture and execution.

Walls work; they are put up all over the World. Recall Robert Frost’s Good wall make good neighbors.

@@alcoholfree6381The Berlin wall was used to be dubbed "anti-fascist protection rampart". It was an interesting kind of a wall since its function was opposite of the normal function of a border wall. Its point was to keep people in, like in a prison, and that was meant not to make good neighbours, but a captive population. The kinds of walls that make for good neighbours do the opposite: They keep people out and protect whatever is encapsulated by them.

@@alcoholfree6381 It might be more in line with the next sentence to say "walls don't work for long".

I love listening to single engine propeller sound effects when I watch footage of a B-52 taking off. Now that's awesome sound editing.

B-52's were truly awesome to see. When I was 5 or 6 in the early 1970's my father took me and a cousin to Edwards Air Force Base in CA to watch a couple of those huge planes takeoff. The power generted from those engines is truly amazing if not scary.

This documentary cuts out all the juicy facts from Castro and his nationalism. There's more to it than him being a communist neighbor. How he originally despised the communist movement and he was only forced to accept due to the embargo set by the U.S. How he was exiled from Cuba originally and he came back. Even the land grab that was mentioned, it was much more multifaceted than it's described to be.

Now you can't forget the sacrifice the Soviet Union gave for our allied victory in WW2, To have the west then turn and stab the ussr in the back, ally with Germany, who was the enemy of the world just a few years prior. Another point I'd like to make, most central and east European leaders or spokespersons will call the soviet union just that. The West collectively will say Russia, when it was indeed the Soviet Union and not just Russia. Russia was just one member of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. And the Georgians and Ukrainians were very much in power throughout their regime.
