I heard when I was searching online I see a yellow one so I think it's the truly ripe or overripe one while the people prefer eating it green just like limes.

There's an endangered garcinia in Puerto Rico that grows around El Yunque - I've heard it tastes good, if you can find it. There are only 60 of those trees left in the world, so hopefully people can figure out how to grow them.

A garcinia tier list would be interesting! Too bad I've only been able to find mangosteen so far (and that it costs $30/kg), but it's got to be my favorite fruit so far.

Well, we normally use it as ingredient for hot & sour soup (usually with mackerel) and as a sourness agent in Namprik (chilli dipping sauce). Those who eat it as a snack are mostly girls since Thai men in general can't really tolerate extreme sourness :P

Can't agree more, this channel introduced me to the 'cannibal holocaust' and 'the black cat' theme which were used in his older videos. Both themes are not something everyone would like but I love them and will remember them for a long time. It's a big loss that he doesn't use them anymore.

Another Garcinia you should try out, if you should ever make it back to the Philippines, is the Garcinia binucao, known as the "binukaw" or "batuan" fruit (in the Visayan region), and is used as a souring agent for some local foods. They're quite rare these days - and their numbers are certainly diminishing.

For sour things, like unripe mangos, we use a mix of chili, salt and sugar, the sugar helps a lot to suppress the sourness.

@@WeirdExplorer Well, I am not being pedantic here but "achar" you had it in Northern India is totally different from the pickles of Andhra Pradesh. We've mastered the art of pickling things. If you can find someone from the state of Andhra Pradesh do talk to him; ask him/her specifically for Avakaya and Magaya. Its a culinary experience that's worth your while. Cheers and Best wishes!

Hey serious question. When you travel to other countries. Do you buy a pocket knife in that country? Or do you bring your own? I am a knife collector.

For the international travel, any folding knife with a blade of less than 6 cm (2.4 in.) is permitted if placed into the checked baggage.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 5 ай бұрын
I've got a system! I carry on my backpack on the way there (its shocking the amount of times bags get lost/delayed) so I can't bring a knife. I'll usually buy a cheap fruit knife at the market and ditch it at the hotel before boarding any other flights. then on my last day before heading home, I cram my bag full of souvenirs and snacks and if I have a knife I'll check that one. So sometimes I'll make the last one a good one.

Plant-medicine is a more crucial, important, even revolutionary subject for humanity than most of us realize yet at this time. For one, there is a core collection now of "infamous" medicinal plants we have all mostly become estranged from, as the plants have been thoroughly stigmatized, criminalized, slandered, and obscured from us in myriad ways, while government and the pharmaceutical industry tries to be the exclusive "handlers" of these original medicines, stripping and distorting them, and then distributing patentable, but neutered/partial and even problematic forms back to humanity, further serving the ill reputation of the plants. Opium poppies are a big one.

There's the sour eating culture in Thailand. Anything sour we'll dip it into a namprik be it simple salt and chilly or more complicated namprik like namplawan (a sweet syrupy namprik). I have a couple of Madun trees in my back yard, but that's more of my mom's thing. I like Mayom (star gooseberry) better, Tum (means to pound, in pestle and mortar) Mayom with Kapi (shrimp paste) is the bomb.
