Maddog MD80 Engine Start Tutorial

This tutorial is very simple, and is the first one to upload that actually has my voice on KZbin. Much of it is already explained, but I made a really, stupid mistake and by the time I finished recording this, my throat was hurting from talking (I had to redo it like 3 times due to my mic level not being high enough). The mistake was that you need to reset the Glide Slope and I've zoomed in on that area near the end of the video. You must have Annotations on if you wish to see where to click. Sorry about that, I didn't feel like editing it in, because I hate video editing, I really do.
Anyway, this video is about starting the engines for the Maddog MD-80 payware aircraft. I will have to give credit for this video here:

That's where I got some of the basics down and noted them for this video. If you notice the slight pauses, that's most likely me having a quick look on my laptop as to what to do next. (I still don't have it down fully in my head)
I'll think about making an FMC tutorial for this aircraft. But, programming it is actually dirt easy once you know the process. (I was very reluctant at first and not willing to try, until I found a series of videos for the PMDG 737. If you want to see those videos, go to my channel and under playlists, click "FMC Tutorial") The only difference between the Maddog FMC and the PMDG FMC is that you have to manually program some extra information, such as Zero Fuel Weight, Gross Weight, etc... You also have to program the takeoff speeds as well. But, we'll get into that another time.

Now THIS is a tutorial, every other vid is just dudes clicking buttons quickly in the cockpit, but you actually explain how and why your doing what ur doing. the FMC is easy for me because i spent lots of time programming them in the boeings and the maddog is practically the same FMC. The APU explanation was very helpful and the engine start made sense. Thx scion :)

Also just discovered the "fix all failures button." One click of it and the engine spooled up. So you have to treat this bird very gently. I like.

Just read a comment on the Avsim forum. Apparently this aircraft is so realistic that you can blow the engines if you use too much thrust on take off. That is exactly what happened as I was taking off on a short runway 6000ft and 140,000 lbs so I used full throttle.

I've been in your position too. Had to do a complete windows & fsx reinstall & then spend about a week putting all the addons back in. Big task. Hope you get it all sorted out.

Took me a while to respond. This MD80 is the most realistic aircraft on the market to this day. One tiny mistake and things will go wrong. I've had various takeoffs go wrong. If you use the autothrottle with "EPR" during takeoff, you should be able to avoid an engine blow-out that way. The APU is also finicky as well. When you're ready to start it, turn on the fuel, get ready to start the APU, but don't for a minute roughly, and then start it. Should solve that problem.

Honestly this tutorial is just fine. If your gonna make more id recommend a takeoff tutorial, showing us viewers how to properly use the autothrottle on takeoff as thats a bit tricky, then if u have time a crz, descent and approach and landing tutorial. And what other A/C? the pmdg ones are too easy to fly and have tons of tutorials out there, youtube lacks good maddog tutorials, you can fill that gap, you'll get my sub for sure :)

Truthfully, I downloaded most of them. Now that I have a job, I can start working on buying them slowly over the next few months. Which was my intention since I started pirating. If I like enough, I'll eventually buy them. I'm starting with FSDT first since their airports are purely amazing. I own KDFW and KLAS from them, need to get their other US airports though.. Also, my FS9 directory eats 50 GB of my HDD.

@daewootango That may be true to some extent, but actually, the Stabilizer warning means that your trim setting is incorrect. However, this video I did was to just start up the engines. I made another video that actually goes through a flight with takeoff and such with no warnings.

Mine is the 2008 edition which is for FS2004 only. If that's what you have, your first mistake is trying to put it in FSX in the first place as it isn't designed for that. If you want the Maddog MD80 in FSX, purchase the 2010 edition instead.

Good news, I found my aircraft installers, so that's half the battle there. Bad news? Dun have the airports... Man I never realized how much time I invested into FS9... And I only recently got into VATSIM, but haven't flown with that in a year or so. Think I forgot what I learned already.

(2nd comment) Of course, I fly the Maddog slightly different that may not work for everyone. Instead of the 'proper' takeoff, I do a manual takeoff, I just match my throttle to the EPR limit and go from there. Landing I also do differently because I NEVER get a proper landing with auto-land. I'll just fly auto up until 800 ft or so from the runway, then off it goes and I'll land manually. I'll figure out how get things recorded soon enough, I hope.

I can understand your reluctance to move over to FSX, as it can be a sizeable investment if you have purchased many addons. Also Fs9 can look amazing with the right addons, & only needs a modest Pc to run it. & Dare i say, probably a more stable sim too.

Why does this plane only allow you to control the left thrust lever after a cold and dark start, yet when I allow FSX to start this plane, I can use both thrust levers.

Level-D 767 was one of my other personal favorites. PMDG I'm debating on since their practice of "anti-piracy" is illegal. So I've actually thought about removing all PMDG software and not buying their products because of that. I'll explain another time, but anyway, I have plans of doing a full round of tutorials with the Maddog. Like you, I had trouble figuring things out until I did a lot of reading and cross-referencing. Having trouble with starting the engines. Sometimes it works fine. Other times N2 would just not rise even though everything is done correctly.

I have the MD80 installed into fsx. Whenever i try to start the engines the exhaust gas temperature goes way into the red, it's even above 100 degrees before i attempt an engine start. If i do get an engine or both engines running they go to full power, i bring the throttle levers to idle but they just go back up to full power. Another thing, speed/mach has only two speeds, 100 or 500. The plane looks great, but i'm getting really pissed off with it.

I've been meaning to redo this video, but my life is stressful currently. There are a couple areas I probably could have done better, and saying what switch is what could have helped a bit better to explain. Luckily, I haven't forgotten my knowledge as I just started exclusively flying this aircraft in FSX until I can buy other aircraft to fly.

I do everything as required but sometimes nothing happens. Reloading the aircraft solves the problem. I just had #1 shut down on me just after take off. Landed safely on one engine but #1 refused to start. Reloaded and away she went. Also the APU does not always start in one go. I start it watch the rpm rise switch views to do something else when I come back rpm down to 0. If I stay and watch it it lights up or maybe it just needs a second go???

Great video but I have two questions: First my engines won't start I followed everything but the numbers don't go up to 21,22. They stay at 0. Next I get a glideslope and LOC fail message on my lower NFD panel. I don't know know how to fix that also when I put a route into the FMC the route doesn't show up on the NFD panel the second one. I don't what to do. Thank you in advance. And I subscribed!

Yeah, FSUIPC is about required for every addon in FS anymore. I don't know FSX since I don't ever plan to buy it nor bother with it. Too much time and money spent in 2004 (FS9) to switch that easily.

+Walter Jeffery I saw your comment a while ago, just haven't had time to get back. I actually like the MD-80's as an aircraft, was in one a few years ago on my way to SeaTac. Whoever was the pilot had probably the best landing I'd ever felt. Plus, the cabin was super quiet since the engines were mounted in the rear. They're old, yes, but sometimes, there's just a thing for old aircraft that should be kept around. I mean, look at the Cavanaugh Museum WWII aircraft they still maintain and fly.

Start sq: 1, 2. Left engine starts normally but the second gets maximum EGT. So I cutting fuel off. Am I doing something wrong? However doing same as explained in the video.

I may have to dig into my brain, but is it not fully turning on like its supposed to once you turn on the fuel line? Normally you need to wait until the revs is about 22.5 or so; problem is, I haven't started this aircraft in quite a while.

Well, I'm also an advocate for DRM free software too, but can't really get that in FS sadly. Oh well... When I mentioned PMDG, what I meant was that it went outside of its own directory (in this case, the MD-11) and deleted key files from FS9, forcing a full reinstall of FS9 just to get to playing again. That is illegal without a search warrant, so I can't say I approve of them doing that when my FS9 is a legit copy. That's why I'm debating on them at the moment.

I do not believe the MD80 has IRS switches, at least none I'm aware of. Either that's the only thing automated, or something.

Open up the control panel for the aircraft before you start FSX. A cold start option is available there.

I wish I can help you, but currently, my FS9 directory is hosed. I have to reinstall it and every addon I got, and that's very time consuming, plus my work hours are unreasonable. If I CAN get to it, I'll be more than happy to make a Version 2 for this with better annunciations of switches and levers, along with better quality. Something I plan to do, but I simply don't have the time right now.

I wouldn't worry about it much. You can probably just reload the aircraft into a cold/dark setting and just go from there. Though I haven't actually used this aircraft in about 2 years or so at the moment.

99domini99 I don't think there's been any other aircraft as advance as this one though. I've flown the PMDG's, Level-9, Quality Wings, little of the Wilco, and a few more. I even tried the other payware MD-8x aircraft on the market, but this one still tops as my favorite.

+deWaardt The battery switch has a Lock on it, that will prevent you from accidentally bumping it and killing your power. If you look at the switch knob it has a line on it, it's normally going up and down. When it is Locked the line will be side to side. My guess is that you've got it locked. But, as this is just a sim, it doesn't affect anything if you leave it on.

I've always stayed away from pirated Fs software, mostly because you just don't know if it contains a virus or not & installation and registration is usualy straightforward, no keygen shennanigans, plus you also have customer support if it does go wrong. I reckon my Fsx & addons must be eating about 150 to 200 gigabytes of disk space !!

I believe the 2004 version does not have a VC to begin with. Though if you have the FSX one, it should. Its been a long time since I looked at the FS2004 one. Like, 1.5 years long.

Did'nt you back up your airport purchases. If not then they will be in your downloads, held in the account @ whichever place you bought them will they. Vatsim, never used it myself, & yes the amount of time & money invested into flightsim can be pretty large & consume very large amounts of your hard drives, many gigabytes !!

If you know where to look and keep an updated anti-virus, you're usually fine. But that's besides the point. The only one I couldn't pirate from was FSDT, and they made it damn near impossible. I'm still debating about PMDG currently, mostly due to the fact they do something illegal if you pirate their software and I fell victim to it once by accident.

Very nice and concise video. If you do more of these, and I hope you do if you could use more nouns instead of pronouns, your message would be that much stronger. Instead of using "this lever or that switch" use "fuel shut-off lever" or "hydraulic pump A switch" or whatever. Otherwise WELL DONE!

The included tutorial flight doesn't help at all, nor does most of the tutorials I found on youtube. So, I need your help on finding a really good tutorial for flying this aircraft.

If you keep your anti-virus up to date then i guess you should'nt get any nasty surprises, but the isp's seem to be coming down hard on sites that host pirated software. like i said the real benefit of buying legitimate software is that you get support and updates, & who can blame the software developers for taking action against people who allow their intellectual property to be distributed in such a way.
