Hearing Maddy talks about her fear of being remembered for the wrong thing explains so much about her approach to this show. Maddy clearly goes out of her way to give her guests a place where they can be seen and appreciated as complex individuals and artists, so they can be remembered for who they are. Not just for the one dimensional version of them we were presented with on TV.

I really appreciate Daya’s nuanced stance on being out and queer. Sometimes it feels like the “out and proud” crowd want to push for everyone to be as bold as they are, but many can’t/don’t want to because 1) It’s not safe, 2) They just don’t have a very outspoken personality, 3) They don’t want to deal with confrontation that may occur. Not everyone can be Bianca del Rio or Bob the Drag Queen levels of unshakeable outward confidence, and it doesn’t mean we’re secretly ashamed of who we are.

Daya talking about being a tall person who is okay being openly queer and “I can hold my own if the situation arises” is exactly how I feel! I’m a tall woman (I guess average for a man), but it still means I have always taken up a lot of space from a young age and towered over a lot of my peers as I wore heels all throughout high school. It’s still unusual to have a conversation with someone noticeably above my eyeline. Because of that, I ended up taking a physical role of protection for my friends. I acted as a human shield against the class creep for 3 years, I shielded friends at concerts, and generally, I have a lot of ease walking around because I know I’m not going to be as easy a target. I’m big, I’m loud, and you can’t just grab me without an issue. Every queer friend group needs that. And yes, maybe in a mixed group I’m shorter than the trans women, but that’s not fair to them to put them in a protector role- send in the cisfemme in steel toes. lol. There is a lot of security in being a big person. If I was as tall as Daya (god I wish) I don’t think I would ever be afraid for my safety ever again. I’d haul my friends over my shoulders and simply walk over any dangerous people. Basically- every queer friend group needs that big bitch. Especially if you end up being the one to be the most out and loud about being different. It makes it safer for those who can’t get away with making themselves a target. ❤

Well done for wearing heels in school! 👏 I'm 6"2 and felt the same in my youth, that "I took up room" and I tried to shrink, wore combat boots or skate trainers (i have big feet so had to wear boys shoes) and i hunched/slouched alot to make myself smaller ( i have scoliosis now 🤦♀️) and it wasn't until my mid teens that I found the power in it and became the protector/human shield. I wish I could go back and tell younger me to stand tall, don't try and shrink. Now as an adult, I'm still the protector, and get a small ping of delight, when I'm looking at a guy square in the eyes telling them to back off, and they look down expecting my height to come from heels, and my feet are planted squarely on the ground (I still wear flats) Funnily enough they always back off 💁♀️

When season 14 started I did not like Daya and I was rolling my eyes when she got brought back, but by the end of the season I had an epiphany that she genuinely had such a good storyline and character development that I still think she should've won. She was eliminated first, she caused drama, had great confessionals, amazing makeup and looks, she was funny, mostly safe with 1 win, and then made top5 and KILLED the solo performance. And I can only imagine what she would've done for the top2 lipsync if she made it. But she worked her ass off to make it to the end and she deserves her flowers for that.
