If you stand to the right of your grinder and adjust the guard a bit, you won't have sparks flying at you. I normally don't use the guard, but that's my preference.

I made a few tools, almost identical to each other. At work we have to drill holes in heat exchanger end plates, and the baffles. They are stacked and drilled all at once. There's not much room between the holes so I machined a point on one end of a 3 inch long round bar, and a blind hole in the other end to make alignment of the drill bit to the punch mark quickly.

Una cruceta para tope de copa. Yo diseñé una hace treinta años(cuando era tornero, fresador), un poco mejor........... Con un agujero en cada cruceta. Y conseguir tres pines de la misma medida, y diferente largo (nueve o doce). Pero cada pin por tres, de la misma medida para diferente ancho de disco. Para un paralelismo perfecto..... Yo usaba acero plata cuya barra por metros viene rectificada. Y refrentarlas cada tres del mismo largo.

Old school machinist like me,made mine 40+ years ago. Make it out of thinner material 1/4" will be perfect 👍 Chuck spider stop is the name of it.

Ive done similar at work .made a few bungs that fit in the number 5 morse taper mandrel to assist me but this is still a good idea .its just always better if you can aviod reducing your jaw gripping area .

It could also just be round. He just uses it as a spacer for when one wants to Face narrower material. I've also done the same thing using washers or coins from various sizes. It Trues the backside of the Material up when something narrow needs to be Faced or drilled in the Chuck. Hope it makes Sense.

I understand using this to replace parallels but I am confused at the purpose of the bolt?

It makes for an adjustable stop if the work piece needs to go to a certain depth, but no deeper. And the part is too thin, or too soft to clamp hard enough in the chuck to prevent it from being pushed back into the chuck if you are doing some heavy drilling.

Me gustaba diseñar. Y un compañero tornero me decía: y vas a inventar lo que ya está inventado? ...y yo le decía: un mecánico debe diseñar su herramienta según su necesidad. You are wasting your time using all three chuck adjusters, it doesn't make it any tighter.

@@richardaisbett1119 , I don't subscribe to that view, especially as there is little to no vibration on a lathe. If there is it will be reflected in the finish. The only time you tighten all adjusters is on an independent jaw chuck, e.g. a four jaw.

Oh yes it does. I've been using a lathe for nearly fifty years. Every time you move to the next key hole you pull the scroll a bit further round, just try it on a drill chuck.

WOW! To begin with, they used a very rare tool called a Bandsaw , then something called a lathe! WOW! Next they went to Harbor Freight and bought and used something called a Vice! Then a “death wheel” was employed! Next they used a truly rare piece of equipment called a Milling Machine, then we find out they drilled and tapped a hole into this triangular piece of metal, and to top it all off, the operator gives this piece of metal Two Thumbs Up! I am truly impressed and amazed!🤔

For when items much smaller than his demonstration piece need turning down to a specific length or in the case of the adjustable bolt (I'd put a nut on the back so it could be locked at a length) for repetition turning to length of many small parts .

I'd turn the irregularities down off the head of the bolt also though for it to be reliable and properly repetitive .
