Made to Last - Yamaha YBR 125 - A Cracking Little Bike

With a massive influx of fantastic looking Chinese 125 bikes at low prices and Japanese manufactures unable to produce bikes at sensible prices for beginners, I take a look at a used YBR125 Custom with outstanding build quality and made to last. This amazing little bike can be had for less than a Chinese clone.

12 years ago I bought a YBR 125 for my then partner too learn on. It was a cracking little bike and we even took it out 2-up for little rides which it coped with very well . In a way my CL reminds me of some of the qualities of a 125 in terms of lightness, agility and ease of use Good vid TAYM , showing every bike has something going for it👍

Newer version of Rob Little's marvelous YB 100. Once upon a time, I've started on a 250 /kawazaki kz 250 that featured in a mutter not long ago/ and bigger bikes after that and never had little bike until resent times. Let me tell you, little bikes are marvelous in their own way. I think they are very good winter bikes because of the low weight and in this case lower seat height too. In the wet and greasy roads you have more feel of the road and even can use your legs to prevent slides. Big bikes feel stable but if they go, they go. That reminds me to take and to send you pics of my new 125 scooter.. It's a girl and her name is Simba. 😁 Sorry for the long post TAYM

That's why I have clung on to my little 2008 Honda Varadero 125! When I was working away on a John Bloor homes site, right next door to the Triumph factory in Hinckley, I was staying with a mate in Lutterworth and commuting to and from on the Varadero. At weekends I would scream the little 125 home to Ipswich at 75-80mph the whole length of the A14!!. 80mph was right on the red line at 12,000rpm! ......It absolutely loved it!!😁 Did that journey about 10 times, both ways! Even riding it like that, it always did over 300 miles on a tank full of gas. A real Naughty boy's bike! Lol!

What a great little machine probably all we ever need...talked to a guy years back riding a Honda postie bike around Aussie...no hurry. Perfect bike for RR he wouldn't get tired and sore hanging on to a big power machine like his Triumph. New excuses as well ie forgot when I last put fuel in it and run out, couldn't find bike in the car park, lost my bike down a rabbit hole, sheep knocked my bike over. Thanks TAYM.

You have to get one of these. We bought our Yamaha YBR125 for our daughter to do here CBT on 3 weeks ago, 2011, 10'000 on the clock, MOTed, its even got a power pipe on it. £1000. Cheap insurance £47.00, Tax £24.00 for the year. Really good on fuel. I can not keep my husband off it. He has road all sorts of bikes over the years. He say it is a brilliant bike, so much fun and can't stop laughing. Under rated bike. It looks as though you was having fun too. Great video. Very entertaining. Thank you.

Personally I love 125s. Had a honda c50/70/90 anf125 over the years as commuters. My innova125 did 130mpg and owned from 1000 ish miles and sold it at 77k after 10yrs. Maintained entirely by me and was running perfectly. I now run the more modern belt drive which is a godsend as I had to take chain off and soak in paraffin regularly despite it having a chain guard. If you want cheap reliable transport they cannot be beaten

One of my 125 ‘s is a 2004 Honda Innova ( carburettor version ) Its 19 years old never misses a beat . Only issue was a replacement speed sensor was required at around 16,000 miles ,the bike still ran but the speedo didn’t work properly . The wonderful little bike will go to the moon & back on a tank of juice ( 3•7 litres ) & bimble along all day at speeds of 45 - 50 mph & hit 60 plus ,carrying my big carcass & only 9•3 horse power on tap . I do all my own servicing & repairs & loads of cheap parts ,it costs buttons to own & run .

That looks like the custom version of the standard YBR . This bike took over from the old Honda 125 & apparently just as reliable . The Yamaha YBR is Chinese built & the engine is used in a lot of Chinese 125’s made 125 s it’s a version of the old Suzuki GN / GS 125 lump . I don’t hold with all this biking season nonsense to me every season is for biking ,so every bike is a winter bike . These small bikers are now fetching higher prices ,due to waiting time caused by the pandemic & there popular use for fast food deliveries . Even allowing for that ,they pay for themselves with their cheap running costs ,& convenience ,in a year or two & will cruise at 50 mph all day. I can’t understand why people would use unreliable public transport ,when they could get a cheap little 125 . Many long moons ago ,I owed a 1971 Honda c 50 step thru motorcycle ,it would do the same top speed two up ,it just took longer to reach it. I flogged my large bike & now only own a couple of 125 ‘s & a 250 ,I haven’t missed the larger bikes ,& enjoy the small capacity bikes, & most of my best motorcycling memories are from owning & riding small capacity bikes up to 250 ccs . 👍

Interesting 🤔 I too ride all year but sales fall off from September and pick up again in Spring. Unfortunately, many bike owners tend to ride just through the summer months. 😁 I struggle to understand why anyone would opt for a car for commutes. this was my first bike for over 3 years (until quite recently, i kinda miss it). in black, 2011 model - plus points 250 miles on tank, around 8 litre; comfortably would do 60, on a good day i could get to nearly 70 tho i'm small, the kickstart saved me when i was away a month and battery was down, can do most of the servicing at home, quite user friendly, even valve check. minus, the front tyre, limited replacement options on the original,; front light is weak for night riding, chrome parts can be expensive, on windy days its hard to get above 50 which on a dual carriageway can be a bit frustrating, overtaking is limited. i was still riding it minus L plates a year after my test, only getting a 'big' bike a couple of months ago. would have liked to have kept it but without a garage having two bikes was a concern. i never rode to Ipswich until last week on the CB500 as didnt want to face A14 on the YBR. its longest journey was Cambridge to Donington on a maze of smaller roads

I had a 2010 ybr when i passed my first cbt. Felt a very solid little bike. Loved how it looked too. Only sold it as it had an annoying habit of hitting neutral instead of second regardless of how i tried to change up. Maybe it was my lack of skill at the time. Changed it for a 2012 cbf125 which seemed like it had a slightly more peppy engine. The custom ybr look's very nice though.

I love a 125. Mrs PGB's daughter's boyfriend has a Keyway K-light. That's a custom, cruiser too with forward controls and everything. I sometimes do maintenance on it for him and I'm always itching for the "test ride". So light and nimble. In fact so light I have to be careful not to counter steer into the first hedge. Again, the value of small capacity bikes is getting ever more relevant as the establishment screw us down. I'll bet that YBR's top speed is a touch over the 72 mph of Ernie 😂. A gorgeous looking little bike that. In some ways too nice to ride on salty winter roads. I suspect that looked after though, it would easily outlast the Chinese offerings. You beat me to it with regards taste. I was definitely thinking pick-n-mix. I think you should do your next bike review whilst sucking a gobstopper? Challenge accepted TAYM?

£2.7k for a ten year old 125 with 9k on the clock seems a bit steep to me. Not a scooter fan but with their weather protection one be a good choice as a winter bike.

I am sure you might find one cheaper on eBay or autotrader but not much. Scooters are also fun 😁 thanks SB 😁
