Putting the extra backlash in the gears to make them go clank-clank-clank doubles the testosterone. Like throwing a logging chain onto a steel plate. Super video and design-fab/build. Impressive. Oh, forgot to mention that you guys also do a great job supplying all the raw material I need.

I had this as an idea in my head for my shop and couldn't get people to understand what I meant by a "planetary gear door" - glad someone else was as crazy as me and already did it!

Thanks! It is a delicate balance that I think we do a pretty good job with. Appreciate the feedback.

This door is amazing! I have always enjoyed seeing engineering and production work together in the creation of functional art. Specifically looking at the gears, it appears that you made them from 3/8" plate, is this correct? Would it be possible to purchase a planetary gear set like the one built for this door? If so, how much would it cost? If not, is the CAD file available for the gears so that I could have a friend with a CNC plasma cut these for me? I know that there are others that I could find and download from the internet; however the size is perfect, and I like the way they mesh during operation.

Where did they get the planetary gear from? They certainly didn't make it themselves. It's the star of the show. Anyone can make a frame.
@ericmattinen47282 жыл бұрын
I would guess they did make it themselves. A water jet cutter and some plate steel. There are plenty of design software that have gear designs in them.

I want to make something like this but have it require like 2 or 3 full revolutions to open and maybe a two stage mechanism that first locks the door then cinches it tight, definitely as a basements 2nd exit door to a stairwell outside or something that wouldn't require frequent use though.

Would you sell me the components for this mechanism? I want to fab and assemble my own vault door and would love this but don't want to figure out how to do the mechanism.
@onlinemetals2 жыл бұрын
Hey there, we don't sell the components for the vault door mechanism. We are just a materials supply company. Best of luck finding the components.

all that just for the small gears to make a quarter turn in practice

Your definition of a 'vault' is a long way from mine. A lot of craftsmanship in the gears, but for just 2 bolts? I won't fuss about an active bolt the hinge side (fixed would be just fine) but nothing secures the top or bottom of the door. The door is at least 6'8" tall and only one bolt securing it? Come on guys!
