So I am a complete newbie and this will be my first circle skirt. I’m reading through the comments and nobody else has asked and it doesn’t say in the directions how much you even need fabric wise to start is it a yard? Or is it more? it just says folded in four but I don’t know how big the fabric needs to be in the first place OK silly question but I don’t wanna cut up my fabric if I don’t need it all.

@MADEEveryday2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kate, Thanks! Yes. You can make a maxi circle skirt, but it's hard to get the fabric long enough....you would likely need to sew two sides seams or even 4 seams to get enough length on your fabric (for an adult). You could also cut a more A-line version of a skirt, so it's not a full circle, and that would allow you to have more fabric length to work with. I hope that makes sense! :) - Dana

Did you just eyeball the quarter inch when ironing?? Would the +5 inches for the waist translate to a bigger adult skirt or would you want more?
@MADEEveryday3 жыл бұрын
Yea. I just eyeball the ironing. As for the extra inches.....(I've added this info here in the video text also): • For kids, I would go with the waist measurement. The extra 2-5 inches depends on how gathered you'd like the waistband to be. • For adults, I would go with the hip measurement. Or try the waist measurement + 2 inches. It's a bit of trial and error since everyone has a different hip/waist ratio.

Thank you for this, I’ve been looking all over for how to do this! How do you figure in how to make it big enough to pull it up over your hips? (I’m about a size 10-12) Would that be waist plus increase for hips? Or just make the opening the size of hips plus an extra inch or two for ease of pulling up with elastic being my waist size or an inch or two smaller? I have a flannel I want to use for a longish skirt. I wear pajama pants all the time at home and I wanted a really comfy skirt. I hope this would work. I’d actually like a 3/4 circle skirt but I am not sure how to figure out the waist for that - there’s no good easy to follow videos for that. Maybe a new video for you? 😉 Thank you for making this. 💕

2π. The circle diameter and circumference formula
@CheyTCheyPie2 ай бұрын
In order to cut the circle for the waist (the top smaller curved line) you have to find the radius of your waist measurements. You start with circumference and the formula for finding circumference. The circumference = your waist measurement. The formula is C = 2•pi•r where pi is 3.14 and we will pretend the circumference(waist measurement) is 30 inches. 2•3.14 is 6.28, which makes the equation come out to 30 = 6.28•r. Divide the 6.28 from both sides, the right side cancels out and the equation comes out to 4.7 = r and that is your radius! Confusing math stuff, but I hope this helped!

Great video, Dana! I just love watching you, and it's so fun for me to feel like we're doing projects "together." I've watched (and used) your circle skirt tutorial over and over. I recently made some Christmasy/winter gathered skirts for myself and my daughter with a flat front waistband and enclosed elastic waistband back. Every time I make one I get a little better, but I have to reinvent the wheel each time, depending on what type and size of elastic I have on hand that late at night! Ha ha. I have a question about using elastic. I cut out my elastic at the size I want, for various projects, but then it gets all stretched out and too long by the end, losing some of its stretchiness. This happens to me with both exposed waistbands-style projects and with casings, with both new and old elastic. Any tips?
@phesine3 жыл бұрын
P.S. I love the use of the tape dispensers!
@MADEEveryday3 жыл бұрын
Hahah. Oh good! I'm glad you feel like we're hanging out together :) And I totally know what you mean about reinventing the wheel each time. Each time I make this, I have to make a new pattern cause the kids keep growing! As for elastic...yes, I find that too---that it tends to stretch and I sew with it, and not bounce back all the way. This may just be the nature of elastic. This is why I cut my elastic the same size as my child's waist, to account for that. I also find that with a heavier fabric like this, the skirt needs to be a bit tighter to stay in place. Anyway. Not sure that helps...it was a bit of a ramble :) Dana

If you cut the whole length of the scissors, it saves your hands and it takes less time to cut the fabric. It helps when you have to do a lot of cutting.
