I am the person who first came to FNC from Santa Maria, Azores in 1968 on a TAP 727-100 when the runway was barely 5000 feet and had to stop and takeoff very quickly! I had been stationed at Lajes Field on Terceira in '68-'69 in the Air Force. My wife and I returned via PDL from Boston on an A-310 about 2012 connecting on a Dash 8Q400 to FNC which back then went on to Las Palmas and returned in the afternoon. We so much enjoyed our stay in Funchal perhaps before it became to crowded with tourists. Now seasonally direct service comes from the US and next year United Airlines will start flying from Newark NJ where there has been a large Portuguese American community to FNC. Sometimes the prices on SATA/Azores are way to high and Madeira is almost UNKNOWN to most Americans. It is far a far better climate and amenities to visit than the Azores which has always been very primative.
