I’m an apprentice with IBEW 666, our apprentice school rejiggers our classroom schedule so that we complete 5 years of classes in 4 years, essentially by taking much shorter breaks between classes than most other JATCs do. This does occasionally lead to the problem of apprentices completing classroom requirements without having completed 8000 years but honestly that’s rare since there’s so much OT out there to grab in our jurisdiction. I’m in my 4th term and started on a 56 hour job and am now on a 48 hour job.

IBEW local 11 here. I’m a wireman apprentice. Crazy how school works different. We go year around. 1 week of day school 8hr days with no pay. We go every 8 weeks usually unless they change the school schedule. I go for my 3rd week in a month and I just finished my 2nd week yesterday. Love the content bro!

Great video! Smaller locals such as mine and a few neighboring locals are very different when it comes to the apprenticeship. We used to go to class 8 hours on Saturday but recently changed to 4 hours Monday and 4 hours Wednesday. We also used to be a 5 year program but have just moved to a 4 year program. Also, once we have our on the job hours and have enough schooling hours you’re able to take your JW exam and get a raise. We still have to finish our schooling at the JATC of course. Cool content 👍

I completed my apprenticeship early as well in local 915 Tampa. We go to school year round, so we complete the academic portion in 3.5 yrs. I completed my 8000 hours of otj in 4 years. I worked as much overtime as I could as an apprentice and kept perfect attendance for school and work. I never took time off. It sucked yes, but it was temporary. So I finished my entire apprenticeship in exactly 4 yrs from the day I started boot camp. I also kept working my entire Apprenticeship only having 3 short lay offs, I always had another call within a few days of leaving a contractor. How did I stay working? Be on time everyday, work overtime when offered, and took no time off. Glad I did because I was never behind on hours.

Hello, great video and thank you for all your great material. I just started watching and the interview video was a very great resource. I am turning 50 and am considering making a change and joining the union as an Inside electrician at 48. My question is, if you choose to hold off on the back-to-back then do you have to wait until the 5th term, or can you choose in terms 2, 3, or 4?
@MadElectrician Жыл бұрын
Right on! I’m happy to hear that you’re finding my channel to be a good resource! If I’m understanding correctly, you’re asking if you can go back to back earlier? The way it works is that you need to complete all 10 terms to finish your apprenticeship. Going back to back is based off of how many hour you’ve worked. Typically, people don’t qualify to start going back to back until around 7th term because they won’t have enough hours. Is that what you’re asking? Thanks for watching and supporting the channel! ⚡️
@dennishall5659 Жыл бұрын
@Mad Electrician thank you for that. Yeah I was asking when you could start doing that. I wasn't sure if you could start on the 1st or 2nd term and get it knocked out. But they want you to have your hours as well to coincide with your schooling. So it sounds like you can get about 6 months early...maybe up to a year if your working OT and back to back?

I don't know anyone getting paid more starting out. Union is standardized pay and non union your pay is dependent on how much you can produce and the relationship you have with your employer. I recommend just getting started. If you can listen and show interest you can climb the ranks. Started at 14 and was at 29 after 3 years. Recently took a pay cut to change employers

But basically as you progress throughout your apprenticeship you will be getting incremental raises until you turn out and get your full journeyman's pay. Here is what I was making at different stages of my apprenticeship: 6/6/17 - 10/28/17 ($16.08/hr) 10/29/17 - 4/28/18 ($19.17/hr) 4/29/18 - 2/23/19 ($22.43/hr) 2/24/19 - 12/7/19 ($26.91/hr) 12/8/19 - 9/19/20 ($33.50/hr) 9/20/20 - Present ($42.80/hr) When I turn out in March of 2022 I'll be at full JW pay (53.85/hr)
