I was going to suggest that, you could also use one to bring smaller plants and shrubs on, which will save money how about a lavender bed if your soil is free draining this would encourage pollenators and look and smell fantastic also Spring bulbs look fab planted en masse imagine a bed full of tulips and aliums that will increase over time. A shed and seating area would be great too, important to sit and enjoy all your hard work plus somewhere to store all your gardening stuff out of sight. You're so lucky to have such a large and natural plot with mature trees. Don't get overwhelmed with the work, a garden is constantly evolving. Check out some gardening KZbinrs for inspiration, like Bunny Guiness she's amazing. x

Lovely vlog Madeleine. You do put youself under so much pressure though. It's a huge garden and as you say, this is you house for life, so no need to rush. You are both doing a great job. One piece of advice would be to give those trees bucket loads of water. Even though we are having a lot of rain. I would do this every day. Xxx❤

Maddie, the wildlife will be loving your garden as it is. Please be mindful of them whatever you choose to do, maybe add some hedgehog hotels and bee boxes etc.. they’ll love you for it x Also, the trees may have just gone into shock after being moved. Definitely give them until springtime to see if they bounce back. My roses get eaten & have black spot towards the end of the season, don’t worry about either - they’ll bounce back. Just try to remove as much of the leaves as possible from around the base, else the black spot will overwinter & come back with a vengeance next year. Give them a good feed in early springtime, or add some well rotted manure x

We didn't have a level place to put in our shed so my husband put some boards around the perimeter, tamped down the earth as packed and level as he could get it, then filled with rock and leveled the rock surface in the space, then topped with square concrete pavers. And of course removed the boards. So the shed has a lovely floor inside and has great drainage! Maybe something like that would work for your greenhouse space
@jangriffiths80133 ай бұрын
I agree with removing the trellis, for all the reasons you stated. If you decide later you want something in that place, there is no reason why you can't. I think you're doing a great job! Gardens take time and evolve. I too am a learning gardener!

You can plant mint in one of the beds. Plant it once and it stays forever. It will take over the bed (you may not be able to plant anything else in there). And ta-dam ! Fresh mint tea whenever you wish! (or mojitos...). And it smell so good! Rosemary and thym do not need much care either and stay for years too. So does lavander if you can find a variety for your climate. You''ve done such an amazing job with this garden!

For putting your greenhouse on a slope you can use sleepers as a base, then you can attach your greenhouse to the top. Dig the sleepers in to the higher part of the slope and then just level the soil on the inside. You’ll need to step over the sleeper where your door is to get inside, but it will give you some more height! Worked well on my sloped allotment (also with a free FB market place find!) ❤

You guys did a great job moving the trees. Fall 🍂 is the perfect time of year to do it. When I move my plants around I always sprinkle some bonemeal in the hole with some soil and spray it with water and then put the tree in but because you already planted it , just sprinkle some around the tree trunk and water it , it just helps the roots to strengthen. It will be fine for next year 🤗 Your yard is breathtaking 😊 Thanks Madeleine 🌺 M :)

in the spare veggie beds that you would like to plant and forget, I would suggest rhubarb , a few different varieties pink red and green, or parsley, curly and Italian, with a rosemary bush in the centre, or another option is variegated oregano that spreads with pizza thyme, spring onions and dill. A nice feature terracotta pot would look great in the middle too, with a lemon tree in it

It is quite a big garden and you are two busy people with active lives, so as to not feel overwhelmed ,this is what I’d think about doing. Scrap the idea of raised beds altogether, just lay the area to lawn and if funds allow in the future, get a robot mower, best invention ever ! Thin out the trees a bit, but don’t move them, they’re too big to survive the move! Keep any flowers right up beside the house area for ease of watering and maintenance. No greenhouse. Keep asking yourselves “ is this going to make my life simpler ?” A neat and tidy area beside the house and a more natural area at the bottom and you will have nailed it!and the bonus will be you’ll have plenty of time to actually sit down and enjoy the garden ! Good luck! X

I only have three garden beds and that is overwhelming lol I’d say to start small and gradually increase the number of plants each year, even if that means only having one or two beds next year. You could also have one bed for herbs like sage, mint, parsley and chives all come back every year! Strawberries too!

We live on a very hilly property. I have thought about having a greenhouse and how I can put it somewhere without going to too much trouble. I haven’t figured out a way yet. I’m afraid it will be a lot of work and very expensive. My suggestion is put your greenhouse at the bottom of the garden, but lay some pavers down as a walkway to make it inviting so that you want to walk down there.
@JohannaAfSwe3 ай бұрын
Love your garden! I thought it looked so nice without the trellis. One suggestion for next season, if you like me get overwhelmed and stressed by the whole process of sowing seedlings inside, is to look up things to sow directly in to the veg beds. You get a later harvest but it’s much easier! Like courgettes can be sown directly.

Such a lovely garden remember Rome wasn’t built in a day! Did you say you wanted less beds? There’s are so many it’s overwhelming you? Have you thought about stacking the wood frames and having fewer and higher beds? Just move the soil too, so much easier to take care of and picking vegetables will be a breeze. Saves the back too.

I really enjoyed this video and I'm exited to see that it's episode 1. I'm looking forward to future episodes in this series as you and Alex bring your plans to life. I think it was a great decision to remove the trellis and open up the space. Please don't feel overwhelmed by the veg beds, you don't have to put them all into production, some could be kept covered over. Now is the perfect time to plant garlic, I know you are aiming for no dig in the long term but there's no shame in forking the weeds out of one of the beds to give you a head start and get some garlic in.

Hi! For the greenhouse on a slope: I saw a video, where they built the greenhouse into the ground, to use the warmth of the earth to heat it. When you put one wall of the greenhouse in ground, you would be able to access it from the other side. I love your garden, but on the first tour of the property I thought: that are a lot of veg beds. I would not be able to fill all of these and maintain it. Let alone to use all the produce you get! I myself would plant perennial plants, herbs and flowers to reduce the workload in spring with growing new plants every year. I look forward to the transformations your garden will continue to get and wish you always the best weather for your plants and plans!

Just now finished watching this video, my little input is, why don’t you use the trellis and put it front of the decking/sleepers, would be a lovely area to have climbers. Also get yourself to the stables and collect as much horse manure as possible as stick a lot around the roses and the trees that have been moved. Love it

Maybe Maddie you could just rid of some of a few of the veg beds? Having them all there is just causing you stress. Just because they’re there doesn’t mean you have to keep all of them. It’s just too much to manage for anyone. Especially once you start having babies. If you keep them all just fill a few with lavender and daisies or plants that take care of themselves

Hi Maddie, I would plant some culinary herbs, rhubarb, blueberry bushes, some perennial veg (lots of options here to research into). You could also look at skincare and medicinal herbs (many of which can be perennial). xx
@dottiebaker66233 ай бұрын
I think the biggest mistake new gardeners make is that they don't take into account the size and shape of the plant/tree they're putting in. Just that one thing will save you loads of work and money. I agree that the lattice made the space behind look separate and unrelated. Much better without it! It's long rectangular shape echos the part of the patio within the sleepers. As for the trees that are not happy, it looks like they may not be getting enough sun. Choose about half of them that you want to keep and either move or take the others out. My last word of advice - if you like your garden to always look very tidy, make it small. But if, like me, you like the half wild, verging on out and out neglect look, you can make it bigger. Over time, you'll find the balance that's right for you. Thanks for all your work to make these videos each week - I can't tell you how much I enjoy them.

Love seeing the updates, ideas and following along with the changes over past several years. For the green house, this may seem out of the box, but could you put it in the area with the fire pit and seating on the patio? In the tour videos you mentioned not using the space much and it would give you a level and easily accessible place for the green house. Easy to grab things for meals too. Love watching you and Alex and seeing your dreams become a reality ❤

I would stain your wood retaining wall a dark green color so it would disappear in the foliage. Last year I took off from veggie gardening, I filled all my raised bed with annual flowers think sunflowers cosmos marigolds etc.. I would plant a combination of veggies with flowers, especially companion flowers. It’s a great way to fill out beds. Lastly for the greenhouse, I built raised beds/foundation roughly 18” high, than had my greenhouse installed on top. This increases the headroom inside and I grow my tomatoes, cucumbers, and okra in there all summer. If you elevated the green house it would fix the slope issue because the raised fountain would act as mini retaining wall.

How would the greenhouse look where to caged area is? Turned sideways with the door facing the house. I wouldn’t put it at the bottom in the “wet” area without first spending a lot of money getting it permanently dried out!Also if you feel there are just too many raised beds to constantly manage, take some out completely, stress and guilt relief and a manageable growing area possibly with better air circulation.
