"Star Players like this don't normally change positions during their career". What the hell are you smoking? Happens all the time. Mookie Betts OF to 2B. Cody Bellinger 1B to OF back to 1B, and who knows this year. Kris Bryant 3B to OF. Miguel Cabrera, OF to 3B to 1B back to 3B back to 1B. Alex Rodriguez SS to 3B. Chipper Jones, SS to 3B, briefly back to SS, back to 3B, to LF, then back to 3B. Pujols bounced between 3B and OF for a few years before moving to 1B. Craig Biggio came up as a catcher, moved to 2B, and then later to the OF. Joe Mauer moved from C to 1B. Wanna go older? Ernie Banks started as a SS, but moved to 1B when he was 31 and ended up with more games played there. Hank Aaron had multiple seasons where he predominantly played 1B. Position changes have always been a common occurrence in baseball. Really ironic you included a shot of Joe Mauer when talking about players whose careers could have been extended if they changed positions, when he did exactly that.
@chrismarston426610 ай бұрын
I think it’s more during their primes. Harper is still the best he’s ever going to be and switched to a brand new position. Most other guys that switch positions (I’m saying major switch like 3B to 1B or OF to 1B, not 2B to SS or LF to RF) are on the declining side of their careers. They lost a step and need to switch positions because their career depends on it. Miggy couldn’t stay at 3B any longer than he did and still be worth paying, but switching to 1B was a great option for his declining range and speed.

Videos like this are the result of someone making an assumption without actually knowing MLB history. Numerous HOFers spent time at multiple positions during their careers, often playing the latter part of their careers at first base since it requires less mobility than other positions. Hell, Ernie Banks is commonly thought of as one of the best power-hitting shortstops in history, yet is listed by the HOF as a first baseman because that’s where he played more games. The only ripple effect it is going to have is on the Phillies’ roster. Any other star player position changes will be completely independent of Harper.

That’s literally a point he made in the video. The vast majority of these players that switch positions do so because they are on the decline and can’t perform as well in their regular position and thus are sent to somewhere easier to play. The main point of the video is generational talent switching their position during their prime. I don't think we have seen it too many times. Lot of them changed their position due to the fact that they are now slower or their range got worse so they would change to be not a liability on defense. Bryce on the other hand could still be productive both offensively and defensively late into his 30s with this move. Also imagine somehow Schwarber has the defensive skillset of Joey Gallo. Then we are talking about a 7 WAR player with a .200 AVG and 150 K per season but is plus on all other categories. Can he get some MVP vote?
