I’m really late to the party on this episode, but I’m so glad you discovered “Project Nim.” I’m a psychology professor, and I teach at a college with a large Deaf community. So, as you might imagine, I talk a lot about the various experiments claiming to have taught language to non-human primates. Herbert Terrace’s project was a disaster from the start. It was poorly managed, and very non-scientific. Nevertheless, the results were pretty much the same as every other study like it. There’s no evidence that any animal other than humans is capable of true language. Nim had simply been conditioned to associate certain signs with food or other things he enjoyed.

Thanks you again Kathleen for your kindness and great sense of humor. Thank you for the pubcast. I never drank but I am with you, I have to look at the things you are pointing out sideways like a dog looking at a ceiling fan. Drinking in a pool- huh? Driving over the CDs you paid for- huh? Taking a powerful animal into your home- huh? I actually do find it hard to enjoy the music or art of someone who molested kids. i find it impossible to support the work of someone who killed my mother and >180K people voting for Trump. I liked Dean Cain, thought he was a caring celebrity until I found out that he was quoted as saying how great Trump was doing for us because "the stock market is up." Really?

It's not just the intake of alcohol. Some of the drownings are bizarre accidents. For example: one boat flew over another one taking the two boys, of this couple, into the lake and (I can't remember if both of them died or one of them) they didn't find him for quite some time. All these drownings happen in the same area of the lake. And Lanier is quite large. To fuel the thoughts of it being haunted.... they relocated 20 cemetaries before they filled the lake in. Love all your work. Ty for the laughs!

Kathleen, do you know that in the 70’s (surprise) there was a lowland gorilla named Koko who was also taught sign language. She could form complex thoughts like calling a spicy radish ‘hurt mouth food’. She had pet kittens she cared for and when one of them died she signed ‘Koko sad trouble sad.’ Here’s the link. Several books and a film were made about her. She died in 2018 at age 46. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koko_(gorilla)

This is probably posted but here goes...Cyclone vs. hurricane: They are basically the same thing, but are given different names depending on where they appear. Hurricanes are tropical storms that form over the North Atlantic Ocean and Northeast Pacific. Cyclones are formed over the South Pacific and Indian Ocean. Typhoons are formed over the Northwest Pacific Ocean.
