Be sure to find out how to preserve long-submerged wood. Ethylene glycol can be used to saturate wood, replacing water to prevent shrinking. That's what is used on the Wasa in Sweden.

QUESTION: How did the wood sink to bottom of lake ? Only one kind of sinking wood exists, which grows in Africa.

Ever been in a wind storm in a lake in a canoe? Well, you flip over and drown and the canoe sinks...for decades.

@@normmiller5317 Of course it would sink if made of material that's not buoyant like steel . However, wood is buoyant like oil , unless it's special wood (African) which is denser than water. Typical American redwood or pine can never sink regardless of its shape.

look up a term called waterlogged. all wood sinks when it becomes waterlogged
