Ok, so how exactly do I "deal with a flipped canoe"???

apparently, it depends if it is fiberglass or aluminum. I have aluminum that flipped on me and my kids today when I tried to pull one of my daughters out of the water. I got it righted fairly quickly, however, it was half full of water, so I figured I would flip it, dump the water out and flip it back up. It fucking sunk. I managed to keep the bow out of the water by maybe a foot with apparently enough air to not sink all the way down. SO I swam it back to shore after getting my daughters on my wifes kayak. We were all thankfully wearing lifevests. Don't expect help from the shore, others could not be bothered to do anything but pretend they did not see. I tried to practice close to shore flipping which is where I learned that ya, you have a few seconds with aluminum or blub blub, it's gone. The terrible video I think we can all agree.

@@craigsundberg1443 i'd check that your aluminium canoe has its flotation foam in the seats and under end-caps. they are their to keep an alum afloat. fairly easy and cheap to refoam

Remembering that time in training where I on purpose flipped the canoe but got stuck under it in the pocket of air. I was in too much of a panic to roll the canoe back over from underneath I tried but I was too weak. It's so odd I can remember everything so clear like it was yesterday but actually it was years ago. I wish I could go back to doing more sports like that. Need to pass my car test first so I can transport myself around

If you do not have the upper-body strength/dexterity to manage the method shown in this video, especially when in deep water away from the shore, there is self-rescue equipment that you can bring with you: 1. A Paddle Float: A paddle float attaches to the paddle blade. This is a self-rescue item usually used by kayakers but I have used it with my canoe when capsized in deep cold water. It works quite well and acts as an outrigger to keep your canoe from tipping over while you climb in. 2. A Rope Ladder: In addition to the paddle float, you can use a carabiner to attach a short rope ladder to a thwart so you have something to step on in order to lift yourself up. This works great in combination with a paddle float. As with any new skill, especially emergency skills, study and practice so you are ready when the unexpected happens.

Why would that help? Who needs practice fishing wet gear out of the water? This video doesn’t even address how to actually deal with a flipped canoe, but the basics are to deal with righting and emptying the canoe, and getting back in. And in terms of who paddles an empty canoe? I live in a sizeable houseboat community just off shore from town. 95% of us paddle to work every day, sometimes several times a day. We don’t load up the canoe unless we’re doing heavy chores like taking stuff to the dump. Most days it’s a backpack, and that’s all.

Exactly what I mean, the same thing happened to me and my daughter in deep water, couldn't flip the canoe so we had to swim to the shore dragging the canoe along. Luckily my daughter is an excellent swimmer so we that's how we managed that one. Show us a video in which the water is too deep to stand in. That's what we want to see.!!!

um... you didn't teach a single technique in this video. "How to Deal with a Flipped Canoe" should not be a video that spends 3 minutes just to say "either swim to shore, or learn to deal with a flipped canoe".

I would appreciate those 3 minutes back. This title is wildly misleading. More appropriate would be “Don’t Tip your canoe!” Normally i wouldn’t take the time to say so, but someone actually directed and edited this video, including one narrator, one random talking head, a series of action shots, a soundtrack, and a sponsor logo, and at no point did this video actually do what the title suggests.

Thanks a million guys. I watched this while floating in a freezing lake after tipping my canoe and with only minutes before hypothermia kicks in I watched this video so I could reenter my cable and paddle to safety. Obviously I didn't make it because this video wasted 3 and a half precious minutes and now I'm dead.
