You have to hang in there for 5 years. You grow SO MUCH between those years. I taught for 30 years and just this May I retired.Read classroom management forums. Even in year 29, I was learning about classroom management. You have to know your kids. Some kids don’t even hear positive redirection- they tune that out. SOMETIMES, you have to be firm: make a statement about behavior expectations and possible consequences and swiftly follow through as soon as the first one tries you. And they WILL test you! It’s hard to do that when you know they’ve had a hard life. But if you don’t help them understand what behaviors are acceptable and how they should respond, their entire life will be hard! We owe to our kids to show them the right way in a firm, loving way. Whew… that’s a little long! I wish you well! Hang in there! It does get better.

I agree with you. This is my 29th year in the profession and every year is different when it comes to students. Even veteran teachers get nervous during observations and I wager that many of us go home and light candles. When it comes to teaching, you have to find the perfections within the imperfections. Sometimes it just boils down to chemistry with students.

Being a teacher and more when you are teaching kids that age can be really mentally and physically consuming, you're not alone! My kids sometimes absorb all my energy and all days are different. That's the thing of being a teacher, you have to deal with problems not only in your class but the things they bring out from home, IT'S DIFFICULT. And it's okay to say it, we are humans too, we feel exhausted and we also want a five minutes break like them. I totally relate to you, better days will come, trust me 💜

Madison I just feel your heart in this video! I’m a teacher as well and I would always have people tell me “stop caring so much, you will burn out”. While that’s true to a degree, it’s also what makes a genuine teacher that kids will remember. Also the rollercoaster of bad days followed by like the best days ever is so real even 8 years into it 😄Let go and let GOD and Jesus take that wheel bc I’m done driving sometimes Lol. Keeping being you 💕

First I want to say how much I adore you Madison! Second of all, I know its hard when you're getting observed like that but remember a quiet, orderly classroom means that no learning is getting done. Your principal, admin, and even future teachers like me want to see those management skills. Seeing you put out those fires is part of being a teacher. No one even your principal or whoever was observing you can ignore that fact. Keep it up! You're doing good! Also, I am not sure exactly when this is being filmed but we did just have a full moon! I know some people think it's superstitious and crazy but I am a full believer in the moon affecting moods and behaviors! We are made of water! HANG IN THERE!

I think you are so encouraging. When children struggle in areas that are hard and there teacher becomes a listening ear you are being used to encourage them. You never know which child might carry your words heavily in there heart. I have childhood memories of being so appreciative because someone said something to me that encourged me. Your awesome Ms. Cambell and an amazing teacher ❤️

Totally relate. High school teacher here and I’m constantly running around, tending to this and that. High school kids can be needy. Lol. And only getting to eat one thing from your lunch/sit for 5 minutes- solidarity sister. People have NO idea how draining and exhausting this profession can be. I’m so glad you shared this with us. Hugs to you!

I am an elementary music teacher who just came back to work after my mom died. I have been struggling for weeks to get back in a flow and know exactly what you mean about having so much planned but having to spend so much time putting out fires. I'm also a second year teacher like you! Just think about all those kids that light up when they see you! I think every teacher is struggling, in some aspect this year. We got this. We can't have nothing but picture-perfect days! We will have better days. I know this comment was all over the place, but yeah

Thank you so much for always being honest ❤️ I am currently in school for my bachelor's degree in education and recently became a substitute. There are so many little things that happen behind the scene that people don't see, teachers are more than a person in the room they can be lifesavers and can truly change a child's life in so many ways. So thank you once again for being honest, I love watching your videos and look forward to when a new video comes out! Keep up the great work and also remember to take care of yourself as well ❤️

Thank you so much for this. It’s my first year and you described my exact thoughts and feelings. It’s exhausting - I’m constantly redirecting too and feel like there is never a solid good lesson! It’s super frustrating but I’m so happy to know I’m not alone♥️

With parent/teacher conferences coming soon, you could give each student a list of behavioral and academic goals for him or her to work on for the next couple of works. Share that with parents to let them know as well. October is always a rough month because it is very long and there are so many tasks to complete. When teachers hear about how their students' lives are and what they have to deal with, we experience a form of secondary trauma. We are still in a pandemic and we are all in some type of recovery be it work related or home related. I am sending you a hug. Things will get better. Take care.

Don’t worry too much about your observation. During mine I had my principal in the back sitting at my desk and one of my students was bullying another while I was across the room helping another student. She called security and wrote up the bully student incident. I was pretty embarrassed and I told her I felt bad because I didn’t know it was happening and didn’t know how long it was going on for. 😞 I got an excellent observation still. Things happen don’t worry too much about it.

Wow girl, you’re a rockstar. Just those little clips of the “come to the carpet” routine it’s evident how antsy your babies are. I know they’re in 2nd grade and have never had a normal school year so that does not help. Like the foot tapping, the quiet noises here and there, the constant fidgety nature. It’s clear they struggle with those things bc mainly, well, home life. Tbh. I taught at a Title I school for 5 years, such high behaviors and no structure at home with those things: how to sit for a little while and actively listen, etc. Also it’s 5 years, 50% of teachers leave after 5 years. Pretty wild. But you keep rocking, your channel is growing so that’s very positive! You can do it!

I can relate so much. It’s also my second year. This year has been insane. Like you said constant redirection, constantly repeating directions, students are so far behind. It’s very draining. I love teaching but man it’s very exhausting. I’ve cried like 10 times already and it’s only October 😂 But there is comfort in hearing that other teachers are experiencing the same things.

I have to make my kids police each other. Too draining to put out those fires with 30 little ones. My star student leads all the transitions. Team leaders hold their teammates accountable with quiet signals and warnings and I quietly walk around giving out stars for good behaviors. I did the same in 1st grade. Anytime you can put the burden of management on the kids, there's one less thing for you to stress about 😊

I HIGHLY recommend reading Troublemakers by Carla Shalaby and looking up videos/articles of her. The book is fast and easy and it gives you so much perspective of how to “manage” behaviors, especially when you teach in a Title 1 school. It helped me sooo much! Maybe some of your colleagues would read it with you?

You should do a thing called NOISE! You write that on the dry erase board. Then if they are being loud/acting crazy you take of the E and so on and so fourth. Then if they get to the word NO they get NO resses. I don’t know about your school but we have a first resses and a second one so whatever resses you are on they don’t get the WHOLE resses! My teacher uses this and it works! Then it starts over the next day! P.S. I LOVE your videos sooo much! they are so amazing! You are so pretty too!

Unfortunately I am at the point where I've lost sight of the positives. There was a time when I was utterly passionate about teaching and was able to hold onto that passion through the stress and hard days. The things I loved about the job I do not get in my classroom. These kids are ridiculous and genuinely awful as a group. I don't teach anymore, I do crowd control. It is taking every part of me not to just walk out and never go back.
