I retired last year after 27 years of teaching. I remember these days...teaching in the morning, then glad-handing for the rest of the night. It was exhausting. At the end of the day, around 7 p.m., we all got kind of slap-happy where everything inappropriate was hysterically funny to us.

The BEST behavior management technique I've used so far is Teacher vs Students. On a daily basis, if students win, they get about 8-10 minutes of free time at the end of the day. If the teacher wins, it's silent reading. Also, if someone is not completing their work/homework, they have to finish it first before participating in free time. And if a kid is acting out, I say something along the lines of "Your choice: you can sit down and work quietly or we can practice this during free time."

If you ever have a parent schedule a conference who may be upset about something going on with their child, always ask admin. to attend the conference. It´s nice to have that back up.

What I like to do with my elementary kiddos is doing table points and we have a behavior chart! And a treasure box! The table that has the most points at the end of the week gets a reward. Keeps them on their toes! 😅

Thinking of you and praying for a better week. Some weeks are just gross but that doesn’t diminish what a great teacher you are! Communication with parents (if they are supportive) has been super helpful for me. I also have a table right outside my room in the hallway. If students aren’t runners, they go sit there to take a break if needed. I tell them, you cannot stay in my room if you aren’t going to act like a kindergartener. When you’re ready, you can come back in. Some obviously need you to talk them through the issue, but this allows you to remove the student for a break for both of you. You can then go out and talk with them about the behavior and your expectations privately. It has worked wonders.

It is so interesting to see how each school does conferences! At my school, we use sign up genius. We are permitted to do virtual conferences for the rest of the year. We send out the sign up genius and parents sign up. Then, the night before, I fill in any extra slots with the word "filled" so that prevents parents from signing up minutes before. This year is challenging. I was teaching grade 1 at the beginning of the school year, but a few weeks ago I was asked to be an early reading interventionist at another school (I had applied for the position) months ago, but there was not a good opening. So just started at a new position on Monday at a brand new school! I understand how you are feeling, I hope you take some time for yourself over Thanksgiving/fall break.

Oh my!! Madison, you have GOT to get your union to give release days for these! Our district (Northern California) takes the entire week to have minimum days (11:50 dismissal), and we confer with parents and kiddos (via zoom this year) until we are finished. I have stopped meeting with parents after 4:00. That's my personal cut off time. In this way, it frees me up to have the entire afternoon on Friday to get my room "holiday ready" for after the Thanksgiving break. I actually always look forward to this week because of the structure. I only had ONE conference that was "problematic" and I had already seen it coming, so admin was present and well informed! This sort of method has kept me personally from the burnout many teachers feel, I think. 27th year teaching and my hubby and I have raised three kiddos along the way. Get your district to LISTEN to y'all...Love you and your channel!!!

I like to send home a parent survey before conferences and one of the questions is about questions or concerns. I like to open it up with that because many times their concerns are the same ones that you have and it’s easier when the parent brings it up. It also helps them feel like they’re being heard. Our conference week is similar although we can have conferences any day that week but one day is our “late day” from 4:00-8:00 pm. Then we have the following Monday off. It’s a long and tiring week!

Have you looked into Whole Brain Teaching? I literally just implemented the rules in my room this year, and I LOVE IT because now when someone talks, the scoreboard reflects it. It’s awesome. They definitely don’t want to disappoint, and when they have to make the gesture/call back for that, it’s an eye-opener for them. It’s gotten to the point where I can hold up and finger or multiple that corresponds to the rules and the kids chant-rule number two-raise your hand for permission to speak! And so this subtlety calls out the culprit without an actual finger being pointed at that. It’s definitely something you may want to look into. I’m a natural born talker and my kids WEAR. ME. OUT. I’m like y’all….this is crazy. It’s all day. Not so much anymore!!!

I’m so glad that we have a parent teacher conference day instead of having to do them after school. Our conferences were virtual this year as well. We also don’t do Friday folders we have daily folders. Have a great weekend. For my chatty class I have a reward jar and they are trying to fill it for a surprise.

I think I would prefer to do conferences the way you do. We offer up our resource time Monday through Friday and from 3:00-5:00 Monday-Friday. We have parents booked at those times every day and it is exhausting. We are doing Zoom conferences though. We have a 3 block so when a parent schedules, all three teachers are present at the conference. We have over 60 kids to schedule! What is frustrating is last night we had a 5:00 scheduled and they were a no show. I tried calling, but no answer. We send home confirmations and reminders so this doesn´t happen...but it still happens! I could have left at 4:00 yesterday but I stayed an extra hour for a no show conference!

I've taught both elementary and middle school and it's common for the students to be chatty this time of year. But I feel like it's extra this year. My middle schoolers don't want to do any of their work right now, just talk all day and then tell their parents they don't understand the work 😒 So my conferences have been basically filling parents in about the fact that their students are playing them. Never a good time ❤

I truly understand your frustrations. We do dojo points. What I have started is a reward system whereas kids can purchase something with their points. Free stuff like sit anywhere or with a friend, computer time, etc to treats or tokens. The "chatty" kids are beginning to realize they need to be better in order to purchase what they want.

Reward Suggestion: I’m a student not a teacher but I’m my class this is what we do. We earn raffle tickets three out the week then on Friday our teacher pulls out 3 raffle tickets and those three people win candy. How we earn the tickets: Our teacher has done this in a negative way and a positive. Both using a laminated card with 5 different things on it. I Positive: the teacher circles a life (one thing) threw out the day If u were good with a dry erase marker and at the end of the how ever many points circles you get that many lottery tickets. Negative: the teacher crosses of the lifes when u were bad at the end of the day how ever many lives u get left u get that many tickets.
