Just yesterday I pulled 5 tubs of seasonal clothes from the utility room, created 10 warm weather outfits and 10 cold weather outfits. Drove directly to the Salvation Army and dropped a big box of shoes and 6 big bags of clothing and accessories. I have one bag of items to sell. It's a feeling of lightness, organization, and relief.

I learned this the hard way once I got pregnant. I didn’t want a ton of maternity pieces, I realized I needed items I could mix & match from casual to dressy that fit me and made me feel beautiful. I’ve been drawn to continue this as a mom and my own children. It makes getting dress, packing for trips and laundry a thousand times easier.

Great video Madison! It is so surprising, the more clothes I let go, the better my wardrobe feels. I am slowly getting the sense of my personal style for my current season of life. I've always hated shopping, which made me more intentional about buying clothes. Even so when I started a large declutter project last year I eventually got rid of several bags of items that no longer fit/no longer fit my style. I like variety too much to be a minimalist, plus we have quite a weather change winter to summer, but I love having an intentional wardrobe of items I like and wear often.

Drastic seasonal change is something that many of deal with plus varied activities such as workout , gardening / yard , hobbies ( such as kayaking , skiing , equestrian , etc. ) that all require specific " wardrobe " needs . Reality check for real life , please . 🚣‍♀🏇🎾 🥾 ⛷ 🏡

The first time i tried something like this was when i studied abroad. I could only take a fraction of my clothes in my suitcase which worried me at the time, but i was shocked to realise that having less clothes was freeing! It reduced my stress (and weight of my suitcase) and i began to actually live my life more rather than worrying about what to wear or how to look perfect for photos or other people. It also helped me start on my journey to financial health! Definitely this saving video to rewatch for when i need a reminder!

I had a house fire and lost every single item of clothing except what I had on my body. Including my weesing dress and concert shirts, it was a hard loss for me. When I moved 2.5 yrs ago I got rid of 4 xl trash bags full of clothes.. I had so many even after that. After my recent fire, I've never felt more relief 😌 I plan on using this method. Thank you so much and good luck to anyone else going through it.

Love this! Six years ago after the birth of my son when my minimalist senses kicked in, I saw all these clothes hanging in my closet that I would never wear again and so it began. The 10 item wardrobe has been key for me. I never have to overthink what I should wear because everything I have I love so much. It’s made womanhood as a mother still feel intentional and I feel good in whatever I wear. Thank you for inspiring us all to be more of who we are Madi! ❤️

@@Deb_Creamer I hope you don't feel like you "should" or "have to" ten item wardrobe if you don't want to! But just so you know it's not actually a strictly ten item wardrobe... you pick your ten core pieces for that season and then add the extras in that you need depending on your climate and lifestyle and taste. If I lived in a super cold place I would probably store some off season items in a waterproof bin just for practicality sake too! Thanks for watching and commenting, sorry if I wasn't clear about that. ❤

I watch all your videos and get so much value from them. This is going to sound crazy but I love your content so much that I’m here for the message and haven’t noticed until now that you mentioned that you’ve worn that shirt multiple times. And I think that it speaks it volumes because again I think most of us love your content but more than anything we’re here because of the message you share about the importance of living in the now and being more present that at least in my experience watching your videos is about that reminder and I take it in and while I’m watching not only do I feel more peaceful in that moment but it always brings me back into the now. So while I watch all your videos as they come out and get so much value from them I have never noticed what you’re wearing. And might I add I LOVE your wardrobe videos. Anyway from one minimalist to another thank you for creating this type of content and for being honest, your message/videos/content are always so refreshing! ♥️

This is the first video of yours I have stumbled across and my goodness am I grateful for seeing it! You have inspired me to change my ways and also made me realise that there is another way. I am currently on my way home from a holiday, and it is actually weighing on my mind the fact that I know I am about to get home to a cluttered closet… not just one closet, but two closets in two seperate rooms filled with clothes I don’t wear or need. The stress and burden of this is really getting to me. I have lived out of a van for the past two weeks and found that I didn’t even wear all of the clothes I brought with me! Why on earth do I think I need such excess of clothes at home?! It’s actually quite ridiculous. Not to mention painful to think of all the wasted money! All I can say is thank you so much for this video! It feels like a friendly nudge to say ‘hey, you can do this!’ I have officially set myself the challenge of minimising my wardrobe once I get home. I am trying to build this mentality that it's ok to have a few great pieces of clothes and wear the same thing a few times a week. I use to be bullied as a child for wearing the same pants (not every day) and that stuck with me till now (I'm 28). Society assumes that if you wear the same thing every day, you are poor. The idea of having a few pieces in my wardrobe sounds amazing. Less laundry, less stress of wondering what to wear each day and more space in my storage area! Thank you for this video :)

I hear you! My mom insisted that we kids wear our school clothes two days in a row to save on laundry. You can guess the result. I even had a teacher in 6th grade who pointed it out in front of the whole class. I'm 67 and I never forgot. I'm hideously insecure about clothes to this day.

I can relate. My parents got divorced when I was in 3rd grade and we did the every other weekend thing for a while. Eventually I went to live with my dad and stepmom and they went to church every weekend. I only had one dress. The kids at church called me the girl in the green dress. We were poor, never had much, but God used that to help me be creative. My husband once told me that I was really good at making something out of nothing. 🙏🥰

For the past couple of years I've only been able to wear what I can fit into one tote. I liked that it took no thought to make an outfit but wow I got so bored with the few options I did have. So while this minimalist wardrobe seems fun and refreshing, it gets boring fast. Loved the video though!!
@HoffmansHouse
@HoffmansHouse 2 жыл бұрын
You mention about not having an excess of options and I love that. I’ve heard of decision fatigue and it starts as soon as we get out of bed. I’ve loved watching your videos and I watch and rewatch several a day. I’m by no means a minimalist and I didn’t think I could even be close with a toddler but we just went through his toys and have a ton to give away! From things that he never played with to things that he grew out of playing with and a big bag of toys that he’s broken because he likes to take them apart and “fix” them. We went on a 3 month trip across the country and when we came home I felt like I had too much stuff and I wanted to throw everything away and start over. And while I know that isn’t practical it’s 100% how I felt and I’ve started the process of getting rid of things that I don’t need in my life or home. Thank you for making these videos!

I hate to tell you, but people do keep track. When I was a kid, my mom made me wear my school clothes two days in a row to save on laundry and my 6th grade teacher made fun of me in front of the entire class because of it. I've also had lots of people mention my clothes, as in, I wear too much black, or that I wear a lot of sweaters. When I was in college, two guys who passed me on the sidewalk stopped me and said, "You're that sweater girl!" On a campus of 21,000 students, btw. People notice.

One more piece and then my wardrobe will be perfect,one more piece and I will stop for a couple of month etc. even thought I don’t own a big closet because when I am buying something then I am selling smith too. But anyway my budget suffers from constant shopping even if it is one price per month ,it costs a lot because I buy quality expensive things. But I want to start saving also . It helped me a lot to consider how relieved I would feel if a certain items that I felt I had to keep but didn't want to got ruined somehow.... if I would spend time and money restoring or fixing them, I decided to keep them for now, but if I knew I'd feel relieved to know they were ruined and I didn't need to spend anymore time or mental/physical space on them, I knew it was time to let go. ❤

Clothes have always caused me some anxiety. And I have learned that having options for all the situations life throws my way reduces that. So I have a wardrobe that can pretty much go anywhere and be properly dressed without much fuss. It is more than 10 pieces but all are classics.

We’ve led it twice! We love it. Whatever works for you, 10 works for me. If lived somewhere cold, I’d have to have a few more pieces but I would try for 1 good coat, 1 good pair of boots, etc and not have multiples. Thanks for watching ❤️

Great video. Appreciate your honesty and video. For me, I am a VERY casual person who can luckily dress casually at work. I've gained so much weight over the last years that it is difficult to find clothes that fit comfortably and look halfway decent. I would much prefer to spend money on good quality that will fit well and last a long time. Sadly, I have no clue even where to start, where to shop and purchase clothing from, good quality brands, etc. I'm also much older than you. LOL.

I know this video is 4 months old, but as a fairly new minimalist (2 years into it) my closet remains my biggest struggle to minimalize. I thought I was doing well, but 10 items!!! I'd love to know how to do this and still have variety. I wonder how much the climate I live in might influence the number of pieces I need in my wardrobe?

Amazing! very inspirational. We also need to be very intentional about the donation process only 10 to 20% of the donations get sold. The rest is sent to landfill o directly to the garbage creating hella environmental problems.What we could do is like ask friends or family if they would like some of the pieces or sell them directly so we can elongate their span life

Having had various long illnesses in the last 2 years, influenza 3 times and norovirus twice, I know that I need at least 3 weeks of clean clothing on hand to see me through. I suppose when you're young and your immune system is top notch, it isn't such a problem, but things change. I need at least 21 t-shirts, and at least 6 or 7 comfy bottoms. (When I'm home sick in bed for 3 weeks at a time, it'll be knit shorts or knit pants, mostly.) Plus an adequate amount of underwear. Did I mention how much fun a noro virus is? Under normal conditions, I wear these clothes as both daytime clothes and sleepwear, so they aren't going to waste. I found several retailers that offer lines of cotton knit pants and shorts for warm-weather daywear, and they're comfortable enough for sleeping in, so that's what I do.

loved the video! for those of you who might not be ready to completely purge, but want to declutter what you don’t wear, here’s a helpful tip: at the beginning of this year I turned all my hangers backwards and once I wore that item I turned it back the right way when I put the item away. after a few months you realize what you really don’t reach for and it might help you let go of those things 🥰 I did end up getting pregnant at the beginning of the year so that made it harder because obviously there are things I can’t wear but will again once I have my baby 💕

I love the idea of this! I have been whittling down my pieces over time as I wear them out, but curious to know, do you find that your clothes wear out much faster having a smaller closet? Would love to know how often you would have to replace a piece because it's too worn. Thanks Madi!
@MadisunGray
@MadisunGray 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. They do wear out quicker you could say, but it’s because I actually wear my items. But I think I get way more use out my clothes. And for me, all the postives of a small wardrobe far outweigh the potential negative of re-buying a item. I’ve also found that when I buy higher quality, it lasts me longer. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! ❤️

I really enjoy using up things and wearing em out. It makes me feel like it was money well spent. When I get holes in my clothes, that's my signal that I've done a good job of wearing them to the end of their life (some could say to repair the item, but how long I've wore my clothes, im typically ready for something new by then). Same for my kids. We don't have clothes with tags on them at the end of the season that didn't get wore. And I feel really good about that. I used to have closets full and baskets full and piles on the floor.
