I just got one of these too (actually the version which adds a JAMMA input on the back as well), and am very happy with it. I don't have the image darkness issue (component connected to a CRT), so perhaps this is a YMMV situation. The one thing I wish it had is a real battery back-up instead of the capacitor (which for me seems to last no time at all). I'll probably add my own battery in there at some point.

I got one about a year ago and it's my favorite Neo Geo as well. The new BIOS rocks, and the AES look is fire. I do use the Orthos dongle to plug in my 8bitdo Neo Geo controllers now and I believe it's the best set up to play these games.

I REALLY love the Neo Geo kits where the shell resembles the AES, but all those always have lack luster video output. I currently got the Open MVS, and the video quality is perfect. Really wish there was a better option for what I am looking for, or an AES style case for the Open MVS circuits.

There are complete Neo-Geo gerber files available for having reproduction PCBs made by JLCPCB or PCBWay or whoever so you can make a brand "new" Neo-Geo PCB as long as you have a non working donor with working custom chips and have the skill to populate it. You can even have the passive components populated when it's made for a pretty reasonable cost.

I recommend going with the Omega MVS, made in the good old USA. The CMVS Ultra from the Beharbros is also great. I own both the Omega and CMVS Ultra.

The NeoSD Pro MVS looks like a AES cart... But also costs like $600+ USD.. you can put the entire library onto it.. but I havent seen any other flashcarts or multicarts that have an AES look for the MVS.

Curious if you tested the 8bitdo neo Geo controllers directly through the USB controller ports on the console with the included dongle. That would be amazing it they worked out of the box.

they don't work with the 2.4ghz dongle but if you put them into bluetooth mode and use a 8bitdo bt receiver they'll work just fine.

I think I'll stick with what I got on the Switch and Retroid Pocket 2S when it comes to NeoGeo on HDTV. This system looks like it'll be perfect if you still have some CRT TV lying around in the garage somewhere. I would like to try one myself but anything that is not HD compatible out of the box in the 2020s needs to be under $100 for me to accept it.

The shallow controller port is better. Allows you to use regular db15 2 row adapters to easily connect to an arcade control panel. The regular deep Neo Geo controller ports are only good for original Neo Geo joysticks which would cost more than this MVS console at this point. Regular DB15 adapters don't fit in the Neo controller ports properly. They just fall out.

I'm a noob at all this stuff, but I just ordered my MVS system from aliexpress. I'm hoping to run it on my 75" tv, but if all else fails I could do it on my 55" Does the GBS control do upscaling? I feel like the original native signal on a 75" would be too pixelated, if that makes sense.

Its from a seller on ebay, Retrostockpile he makes arcade sticks and does a few different Neo Geo sticks.. not exactly cheap.. but great quality and looks nice. Definitely cheaper to make your own.. and is easy to do as well. I have a video somewhere on my channel going through the process of building a Neo Geo stick with all the wiring etc.

Im not sure what you mean. There are no settings to use. Just plug and play. But if your tv doesnt like the signal it may not work, so id recommend testing on multiple monitors if possible.

What a very cool unit. For $250 I do not understand WHY it does NOT have a dang HDMI output? Most modern TVs would not be able to even use this device without another unit to transfer the signal with the additional expense. For $250 they can keep it!

Um... because this is 30+ year old hardware that didn't have HDMI... there exists HDMI mods for these systems... but they will cost you more than the console to get one and have it installed.

For my country (in the Balkans) the price with shiping is a little above 300 euros while the device is a little below 250 euros. All in all I feel it's a great price. The only shipment method is DHL, if there are other options, they can skyrocket the price. When you have the default Chinese or Singapoorean options, they are very cheap or even free.

MVS games are typically cheaper than AES games so thats one reason people like the consolized MVS units... the games are the same. Prices have gone up over the past few years on MVS cartridges, but there are still plenty of the heavy hitters that are lower priced... best deals are importing games from Japan though. Other solutions include getting a 161 in 1 cart for cheap and having that hold you over... or buying a Neo SD Pro which is really expensive but can play every games for the Neo Geo on one cart.. where the 161 in 1 cart is cheap it doesnt really have that many games as a lot are hacks... so its only somewhere like a third of the library of games on that cart.

I would like to play some games, like Metal Slug f.e., with the microswitched 8bitDo Neo Geo controller, but unfortanely it's not compatible with it, maybe with future firmware.

Tell them it's not finished and to leave it with me and get called a garbage tech because I didn't want to remove a dip ic without a new tip for my desoldering gun. The customer made sure to send me pictures of torn traces.. there were no torn traces bahahahahha. Some dude he sent the machine 3000km "for a real repair" gaslight him hard. It was a friend to and I guaranteed his machine as I make 4 times as much as him. Ended up costing him over 1k. He got catfished twice so he apt to not listen to reason. Haha

I've had some amazing cheap consoles off AliExpress. People often sneer at it but there's load of decent stuff if you do some research.

Meanwhile I have a mini Neo-Geo Anniversary that cost me €75. At some point you have to stop yourself throwing money at dead systems, because the price is what the fool is willing to pay. Especially with SNK themselves supporting the availability of their back-catalogue on modern hardware. So even the preservation excuse doesn't fly. If there was no other way to enjoy the classic titles I would absolutely jump at this. As is stands, it's good money to bad money. The sellers are the smart people here.

$250 is cheap for real hardware. You paid €75 for an emulation box. My PC emulates far more than just Neo-Geo, yet I still buy real hardware. At some point you have to stop caring about what strangers on the internet spend THEIR money on. 🤷‍♂️

This weird Chinese console is a mix of different boards from the original system connected to a Chinese body. The latest one is from 2022 (it was written on the top right). Looks like Chinese homemade to me, and overpriced to boot. I'd rather take the original, as this has no collector's value - just a copy.

It's not weird, these are called C-boxes and have been around for years. They're made of actual SNK arcade hardware that is converted into a console.
