In american and european martial art movies, when there is a fight scene you can notice that the camero moves a lot, it moves so much that you basicaly can't see shit. In this movie, the fight scenes are clear, you can fully appreciate the choregraphy. I think that this is a result in the difference of practice in martial arts. Ps : Not all american and european movies are like that, but most of them.

@exiszentriker2952

I think the reason that the camera moves a lot in such action scenes is because they want to cover up the fact that the choreography is basically really bad. In movies featuring Jackie Chan for example the fight scenes are clear and visible because they don't have to hide anything.

It's because the action is played by stuntmen and they take several shots to have the scene they want. Close up shots with the actors' faces. Their culture is more firearms and explosions. In comparison to Asian martial arts movies, theirs are more simplistic so to a public used to that genre, they look slow and boring. Thus the production team hides their shortcomings as well as hide that the lead actors aren't playing the fight scenes themselves with effects they've always used in Western shows to simulate action even when there's nothing interesting on screen. Best behind the scenes I've watched of that trick was for the CSI shows. The production team explained the forensic scenes are very boring if they've shown them as they truly were. For instance: take a sample, put it under the microscope, push the button of the computer and wait for the analysis and results. Boooooorrrrriiiing. So what do they do? Choose an upbeat music, play with flashy lights as if it was a clubhouse, make non-stop cuts of a few seconds, turn the camera at weird angles... Then mashup that jumble together and the public feels as if they've watched something exciting when in reality, it's just a lab staff turning on his machine to wait for the analysis to come. So unimpressive martial arts scenes in Western productions are given the same treatment. Plus they add explosions and other distractions into that jumble.

@@AlexTrismegisto if I'm not mistaken, the set for the filming is dusty (you know that the raid is a low budget movie, right?) That's why they wore masks when the camera off.

Jeez, Yayan Ruhian is wild! I wouldn't want to be on this little guy's bad side. He could've actually killed a person with a couple of punches.
@Watcher4111

All the punches and kicks to the body of the actors were real. Iko Uwais and the other fighters had to learn how to control their speed and strength so that it would look real on the camera. From raid 2 trivia

What i know, the director of John Wick and the star Keanu Reeves have get inspiration from The Raid direct camera movement. Before John Wick exist. Keanu Reeves bring The Raid Star to play in Man of Tai Chi. The Raid star already impressed Keanue Reeves in The Raid Movie. John Wick 1 director already learn how to make a movement in The Raid movie and bring to John Wick movie. This is just like Capt. America Winter Soldier, when Russo brother direct the fight scene of winter soldier they both said the camera movement and some other stuff and directing camera work have get inspiration from The Raid movie. And we should known, The Raid is Low budget, how we can imagine if Gareth Evans direct the Hollywood action movie with high budget? Gareth Evans have skills... skills and talent cant be measured with money.

I see many comments here wondering about the mask. Is wearing mask a bizarre thing even without pandemic going on? Anyway, I followed this movie since production. They wore masks because of the dust from the materials and paint they used at the time.
