I would like to add .. in saltwater I would not recommend putting loctite on the impeller housing bolts .. use perfect seal or a light coat of anti-seize .. the factory uses loctite there I wouldn’t personally..

Your a legend my friend! Thanks from Australia! I completed the 100h service from other video and it worked great. They charge $650 for that service here. I wasn't happy after my last service with local Mercury dealer here. They charged me for some parts and didn't even replace them. I service electronics and use a trick to see if they replaced the parts. I put a small mark with sharpie on the part then see if the mark is still there after I pick it up. Got charged for some filters and he swore it was replaced yet my sharpie mark was there where I put it. I was NOT happy. Thanks to your videos I now know the parts were replaced.

I just took mine apart and it shows the impeller fins twisting the oposite direction of how you inserted the new. Actually mine looks identical to your replaced impeller and you have 4 fins that turn clockwise and two badly worn. If you think about what you mention in twisting the impeller clockwise to insert it into the housing and the housing is upside down in your hand then you'd most likely want to twist it counter-clockwise while inserting. Either way it should not hurt anything though, but it is possible.

when I put the impeller in I put it on the shaft and watch the keyway go in and rock impeller back and forth to be sure it's in position then slide the water pump top housing on slowly turning the drive shaft clockwise only as I put the pressure on the w/p top housing as it slowly goes down into position with a little pressure on it going down with my hand the reason I do it this way is if I put the w/p impeller in the housing first and push it down I've had the key fall out the way you do it even with the grease trick but if I put impeller on first and I can see the key go in and line up so I feel a lot better that I've got this part right but like you I have better luck doing the going back in the neutral position good video sir I guess different strokes for different folks lol

Could I “push” water through the clean out by the motor up and down switch on the left hand side? Or maybe gently insert a short piece of weed eater line in the telltale? Great video. When you say "bump start" do you mean use the key? Wont the motor start? I'm doing mine this weekend
@ReelLifeFisherman6 ай бұрын
Yes use the key or a push button start jumper if you have one .. I've never had a problem using the key method but to be on the safe side unplug the crank position sensor on top of the engine at the flywheel. There is a two wire connector there red and white wires. The engine will turn over but will not start.. the risk you run not unplugging it like in the video is if the lower shifts into forward and the driveshaft engages in the engine, it can try to turn in your hands and hit you if the lower is not on the studs when it engages. This has never happened to me in my 10 years of experience but it is a possibility.. so to be on the safe side unplug the crank sensor and just have someone use the key bump it to start then back off as soon as it turns .. do this until it lines up. Let me know if you have any questions.. thanks for watching

A great video. Many thanks for taking the time to do it. 2 questions. Being from the lock up capital of the world. Melb Aust we run in salt water. Is it best to use the muffs on the bottom of the foot or use the water flush on the side of the motor. Also getting the water tube on again would putting a smear of rubber grease be ok??
@ReelLifeFisherman3 жыл бұрын
Thanks I’m glad you liked the video! So I will always run the motor on the muffs after the salt unless I forgot them at home! lol the flush on the side works great for reverse flushing.. it is not supposed to run the motor on that.. it’s good to use if you ran through sand or mud.. or if you don’t have the muffs or can’t use them like if you keep it at a slip .. and absolutely a dab of grease is a good idea .. I do it every time on the water pick up tube coupler.. thanks for watching and commenting! Let me know if you have any questions..

Well, I'm personally glad you didn't get the lower part right the first time. Otherwise, I don't think I could have put it back together myself. After a few curse words, and a pair of pliers to turn the shaft just right, I was able to finish the project. Should my Optimax 150 pee immediately, or does it wait until the engine is warm? I have fished a several years, but have never taken a boat out myself. My dad died about a year and a half ago and I now possess his Nitro 7. It has not been on the water in almost two years, and the batteries need to be replace. The cranking battery has totally died and I have tried charging it and reconditioning it. I also decided to replace the trolling motor batteries with Li Time (lithium) batteries, and am going to install a lithium charger, too. But, I already knew that the tell tale wasn't peeing from cranking it up a few months ago. I had tried muffs, but it never peed. I bought a large (soft) rainwater collection "can" and filled it up. That way the propeller can turn with no need for the muffs. Using both methods. it still never peed. I only found out today that I could screw in my hose to the left of the tell-tale. That did cause water to stream from the tell tale. But my main question still remains: Should the tell tale pass water immediately, or should it rely on the engine warming up enough to open up the thermostat?

Great video. I'm putting a lower unit and bay kit on my 115 merc today after taking off the pump. The linkage is done in the tiller but I had questions on the extensions on the shaft and shifter. Do I just grease the extensions together? A guy on KZbin said to super glue shaft extension to shaft so it doesn't stay up there when you put the pump back on. That doesn't seem right. But have motor in neutral when doing all this and just grease the extensions on when stuffing it all up there like you did in this video? Much appreciated. G

So the only bay kits I have installed all came from mercury had the extension for the lower unit itself with the long studs and came with a new lower unit with the longer drive shaft and shift shaft then a extension for the water tube that sits in a notch in the lower unit extension. I add a dab of grease in each point for the water tube with O-ring and grease on the drive shaft splines and shift shaft splines .. Hopefully that helps and makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions or I didn’t understand exactly what you were asking. Thanks for watching!
@hooks4nooks Жыл бұрын
Thanks man, yes, that's exactly what I got from Stevens Marine. Lower unit, with bay kit and longer extensions for shaft and shifter, water pump extension and the longer studs. Sounds like the same. So it seemed to all go together well. Only thing, when it was all together before tightening down the lower, it had maybe a 1/4-1/2 inch gap but snugged up once the bolts were put on. Do you find that normal for everything to jive together the first time with that bay kit? So once it was all put together, it shifts, pees, and seems to be functional. That shaft extension wouldn't fit up in the housing and I had to take the cowling off in order to put it above the mid section on top of the shaft? I'm going to check the oil in lower and then run it. Anything in particular I should look for that might not be right? If it pees, shifts and runs fine I should be good huh? I think the next time I'll definitely take it to the shop. Thanks for your time. Great videos.

And if you want they can just do the impeller change and you can do the rest of the service and save money.. thanks for watching

did you also have to connect the tube for water pressure / speed odometer?

Any chance you can post the cut out dimensions on your table for the lower to fit that cleanly?

Is it necessary to drain the gear oil prior to changing the impeller? I have heard that it is required on some other Mercury engines (to prevent spilling a quart of the oil) when removing the lower unit, but you make no mention of this. I am hoping that is not necessary with this engine.
@SCDeerAddict2 жыл бұрын
Not necessary

I replaced mine after watching your video, I’m also is 150 four stroke, now it is making a noise and vibration coming from behind the cowling almost seems like it’s coming from the water impeller area ,not sure what it is , any info would be great

Can you give any instructions for the high pressure fuel filter (8M0090809)? The 300 hour service kit (8M0094233) from Mercury comes with this filter but there is no info available on DIY change. The maintenance tag on the engine doesn't even mention the high pressure filter under the 300 hr service section. The Mercury Maintenance Manual (8M0105247) doesn't provide instructions (it only covers the low pressure filter.) Thanks in advance for any thoughts or comments on the high pressure filter change.

Hi! And TY. Could you please tell me what it is you have outside your Finn? It looks like a sort of cover made of stainless steel and polished. I always wondered why nobody ever had invented a Rubber Thing to avoid damage in Rocky waters Like here in The North, Sweden and Norway. But this one looks really Good!! Where can I buy it?? Jfkrag

That is not my boat, it’s a friends .. but that is actually a skeg repair kit from a company called skeg guard.. usually guys will put those on after they have damaged their skeg.. another company called panther also makes one as well.. but if you live in a very rocky area not a bad idea to put one on.. or if you have tore one off already I would definitely recommend it! Thanks for watching the video!
You would need to order the right one for your make and model motor.. thanks again for watching the channel..

Can you just rotate the prop to realign the splines ? I took my lower unit off in neutral..have not put it back in yet I am hoping it will just line up with no problems. Any info would be helpful Thanks
@ReelLifeFisherman4 жыл бұрын
Only if you put it in forward on the shift shaft can you turn the prop to turn the drive shaft.. but then make sure you put the control box into forward also..

Isn't the impeller put in the wrong direction,I know it will correct once the motor is started,but seems it would be rough on the impeller?

Please,please do a video on cleaning the steering cable out that connects to the steering arm. Usually the steering wheel will start to get a little stiff. Any possibility of you doing a video like this?, I love your other videos and I have use them, I watch them repeatedly every time I need to do the maintenance again. Also I left you a thumbs up

Gday mate, very new to your channel, firstly thank you for these great videos with the handy tips. Secondly I recently purchased a boat from a mate with a 2018 90hp mercury on it. Its got 34hrs on it. He has done the initial 1st set up service but hasnt done any other. Ive recently(thanks to your videos) changed oils, filters but haven’t done the water impeller. My question is do you think I should or wait a little while longer? Thanks you
@ReelLifeFisherman3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the channel! I appreciate it and hope you like it! So mercury recommends doing the water impeller at 3 years or 300 hrs whichever comes first.. but really it depends on how much it sits for long periods without being used.. that can be worse then using it often! The impeller can get “set” in the blades and they won’t make good contact with the housing.. causing it not to have good water pressure and cool the engine.. also if it’s been through any mud or sand it would be a factor to change also.. personally I’d rather be safe then sorry.. outboards can overheat fast.. but it will go into guardian mode and try to save itself.. let me know if you have any questions.. I have one impeller change video up on a 150 .. very similar to yours.. same impeller even
@koraymusi3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the great response! Ive taken her out since and the water does pump with a lot of pressure but your definately right..... better safe then sorry ..... Ill get into it while watching your video as an informative guide..... mate thank you once again..... 👍
@ReelLifeFisherman3 жыл бұрын
No worries ! I mean you’re probably good for another year or so.. but I just have to tell you what mercury recommends.. and leave it up to you to decide.. if you do decide to wait keep an eye on the pisser , if it starts sputtering or seems weaker change it ASAP.. thanks again for watching and let me know if you have any questions

I replace my impeller every 3 years whether it need it or not. Every time I time I do it, I always have to remind myself where the blades face when I put it in the housing. The video shows the blades being bent to the right when the housing was removed (the housing being upside-down). When the new impeller was installed in the upside-down housing by turning the impeller clockwise, the blades were facing the opposite direction of the blades in the housing that was removed from the drive shaft. It's my understanding that if we have a right hand motor and we install the impeller holding the housing upside down we need to twist the impeller in with a counter clockwise rotation. With a right hand motor, If the impeller is on the drive shaft and we turn the shaft to the right (clockwise) pressing down on the housing will have all the blades bent to the left (if we were able to look down on the housing). If we removed the housing, holding it upside-down, we would find the blades being bent in the same direction as the blades in video when the housing was first removed (bent with the blade going to the right). It's not rocket science, but it's close.🙂
