The song is more than just about a mundane day. It's about waking up, going to work, day after day, it's always wet and grey, your body is aching and you're just wondering what the point of it all is, and just wishing you could "sink without a trace".

I recall one of the music paper hacks writing Madness off as a novelty band, the response was something along the lines of suggesting that they try listening to the lyrics, about as funny as a f*****g funeral at times. Great band, a national treasure.

I think there's a missing detail in the song - that the narrator has an addiction problem. We have talk of lingering weariness, erratic sleep patterns (hence "in the park"), unexplained injuries and paranoia (daily life seeming to mirror his sleep-paralysis-style nightmares)...what's the obvious choice to tie these things together? Personally I would have recommended one of those 1990s live versions with that added breakdown section in which the bass and guitar get some room to manoeuvre.

Yep ! Can always relate to this ! Winter in Uk can be very much like this ! However spring is on its way , the daffodils are out ,and the sun is coming ! And the Blue bells are on the way in the woods down the road !

Specials had "Ghost Town" Madness - Grey Day. Minor Chords, Tubular Bells give a special feel to this kind of tune. While it may be wet and Grey in Manchester and Birmingham for some reason only London ( particulary NW West London ) has a kind of feel of grotty weather and feelings that are almost permanent, sorry Neasden but you know what I mean ( actually East London north of the Thames is worse, but even that is different , influenced by the mass of the Thames.

You're certainly not giving them too much attention, but you're giving their later output too little attention. Do check out their stuff from 2009 and forward. (The Liberty of Norton Folgate, Sugar and Spice, Mr Apples etc.) That's where they really get going.

I can't imagine life without madness although 86 to 92 they split it's mad madness have been back for over 30 years and I still haven't seen them I must change that. It's amazing how they put fun into darker subjects by having a laugh at themselves if other bands did that they wouldn't keep splitting up all the time The Damned were like that in late 70s quitting after every gig almost now there more together now than then.So would it be possible to play appropriately "I just can't be happy today" by "the Damned " that would be wonderful 😒😊

Good choice. Thank you. I empathise with you. This song was very apt for me too. Not literally a grey day here as of writing, but otherwise the song and video for me pretty much sums up the feeling of not being in control and more or less at the mercy of others while trying to do your best so others benefit leading to nightmares. Not a very pleasant feeling, but at least you wake up from your nightmares in the morning.

I was in London when this video was being filmed. I remember hearing bellowing from miles away and the double decker came down (I think) Oxford street and the bellowing was coming from Carl (he in the top hat who will always be Chas Smash to me)
