"This is David Bowie. Thinking about Madonna... as a performer she's quite miraculously gathered all those elements that were mere seedlings in '70s performers. And what she's done over the last ten years is not at all easy to accomplish. She's a top-drawer plate spinner - and I think she's looking really lovely at the moment." broadcast March 1998 on BBC Radio 1 as part of a Madonna special

@kkh369 The timeline is off to make the story believable. She lived in Rochester Hills, Michigan which is about 40 miles from Cobo Hall in Detroit. Like always, concerts at that time started around 8 or 9pm, depending on whether there was an opening act. She said she hitchhiked, which would have taken at the very least 2 hours to get there. Did her family have a bed time of 5pm? I'm sure she went to the show, but embellished it to sound more rebellious and cool.

If anyone is curious, Madonna saw him on either June 22 or 23, 1974. Diamond Dogs tour. This would have been the tail end of the first leg of the tour, the very last time he would perform under a Ziggy-like persona, Halloween Jack, the Ziggy with the eyepatch. One of, if not the most expensive set productions of all time up to that point. The first leg nearly bankrupted Bowie, which prompted him to scale it way back for the second leg. So basically, Madonna was very very lucky to be there for Bowie's farewell to glam tour!
@superamanda
@superamanda 7 ай бұрын
Just because she saw him in concert doesn’t mean she should induct him when her music, her style everything has nothing to do with he who was born today. This was just her trying to get more attention and trying to say oh I don’t make shitty pop music like other Pop stars when that’s all she’s ever done. Bowie didn’t show up and had no respect for her

There would be no better to accept the award on Bowie's behalf like whatever Picasso but face it her career is basically following the path Bowie set and I am saying that as a compliment. The moment I became a fan of David Bowie was when re-watching a documentary series on the history of rock and roll that I'd first seen when I was five. I was now eleven, re-watching the whole series in order. When they got to a film of Bowie singing "Ziggy Stardust," that riff really stood out for me. However, something else that relates to this video also happened. I didn't recognize him in that film, and my mom commented that David Bowie is like Madonna. "He reinvents himself." Having that analogy said to me the moment before I became a fan has possibly had an effect on me, seeing those similarities. When analyzing them both, however, Bowie reinvented himself more musically, and sometimes with bigger extremes. Madonna reinvents herself visually, but musically, although she reinvents herself, it is always within the dance-pop format. No, I'm not knocking her. Both of them are very talented.

+Rick Jones not true. his own photographer said he was proud that he inspired madonna and loved her. Madonna and bowie are both close to rosie o donnel. theres a video of him praising her. asking her to accept his award is a pretty big signal too. its not a grammy, it's the hall of fame. they are pretty respectable compared to the grammys thats not giving awards to anyone they don't like. if Madonna were on tour she wouldnt have been at this show either, she wouldn't cancel her tour plans, so M would also have asked someone else. interestingly though, he never once acknowledged gaga no matter how many times she begged him. that one i find very telling :p

+no hassle I think Ghost Town is my favorite track right now, but it tends to change depending upon my mood...as for Bitch, I'm Madonna being trashy because she's almost 58, what does that have to do with anything? Madonna has always defied convention and tradition, so why would we expect her to start acting average in her late 50's? I never expected her to fit into any type of conventional social norm, so that's just part of her very unusual take on life. I wouldn't expect her to start "acting her age" anytime soon. She is in no way typical.

+TheSublimeBastard I agree. She's in a league of her own, to reference one of her movies. Nobody is better at what she does. She's brilliant and very creative. So she was such a big fan she saw him once in 1975 and although it was great never saw him again in 40 years I saw David Bowie any chance I got in N.Y. ( she lived there too right?) seeing someone once doesn't make you a big fan and who cares how YOU got there.

Stephen Chase isn’t it possible she actually met him many times once she became famous at private celebrity events? She is friends with Sting, Mick Jaggard and Paul McCartney and so many other British Artists. She was a fan and was influenced by his work so deeply. He was an inspiration to her. Why do you have to question her genuine feelings towards him. You don’t know her or Bowie for that matter.

If she was 15 at the time, the show she saw was in '73 or '73. I'm sure she saw him at later tours as well. Why would you assume she never saw him again?

"thank you David Bowie where ever you are (followed by a little "devilish" smile from Madonna)...I'm guessing Mr. Bowie got a pass for his musical genius...He's holed up in a private place on earth serving out a well earned retirement.....

I’m curious - when David Bowie was still alive, did he pick the winner of this award? Or was this award given after his death?

Answering your question a year late, but Bowie wasn't big on awards. Never felt them necessary for for artistic endeavors like music. He turned down many accolades and awards in his career.
