Just to add to other comments, Björk released the reworked version of her demo as Sweet Intuition [B-side on the Army of Me single] (there's also a different mix called Sweet Sweet Intuition [B-side on the It's Oh So Quiet single]) so part of the lyrics are on both songs. Both Björk and Madonna's tracks were produced by Nelle Hooper. And if you want to dig more on the art inspiration, do some research on Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington, their work is the main inspiration for many of the vignettes on the video.

Most of this video references the surrealist avant-garde 1969's film by russian director Sergei Parajanoc: "The color of Pomegranates" search for it on KZbin and you'll find out Madonna restaged some great scenes of the movie and the rest are references to surrealist paintings by Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo and a little of Frida Kahlo

This song was written by Björk as a way to collaborate with Madonna without actually singing together in a track, it is actually derived from a Björk b-side called “sweet intuition”. An interesting thing about the video is that as part of its imagery it shows an interpretation of a Mexico based Spanish painter by the name Remedios Varo, the painting I’m referring to is called “the lovers” and it shows two people sitting next to each other with mirrors for faces and they stare at one another. If you’re looking for artistic and weird videos do check out Björk’s, you won’t regret it.
@allstarz1234563 жыл бұрын
Sweet Intuition was Björk’s rewrite of this song. Björk wrote this for her friend who was currently working with Madonna on her album, however Madonna changed it a little too much for her liking so upon hearing it, she wrote Sweet Intuition. It’s so funny how much Björk did not appreciate Madonna’s take on music.

Hey guys. I totally get how over your heads this video and all it’s bizarre imagery was, especially after your first viewing. It was so far above all of our heads as well when it first came out🤣 The best way to get the most accurate description is by checking out the song’s Wikipedia page. Basics: written by Bjork after Madonna asked if she would write a song for her Bedtime Stories album in 1994, 3rd most expensive music video ever made, most of the new age and surrealist images are influenced by works of art by some of Madonna’s favorite, female surrealist artists, the video is permanently displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Hopefully this helps a little👍

I love your reacts guys! Hugs from Guadalajara 🇲🇽♥️

The album version of Bedtime Story is a lost gem in her discography. She has never preformed the album edit of this track. EVER. A genuine shame. It's such a avant-garde rhythm and perfectly paced tempo of a song. One of my very, very favorites from her. It was written for her by Björk, Co-produced by Madonna and Nelle Hooper. The music video has visual themes inspired by some of Madonna's favorite painters, Frida Khalo, Remedios Varo, and Leonora Carrington. The entire wardrobe, including the death scarf that is placed over the child was all designed by Gianni Versace. This video, and her video for "Human Nature" were added to the New York Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. I'm glad you guys both enjoyed it. The video is one of the most striking and brings the surrealist influence of the artists Remédios Varo, Frida Kahlo, Lucien Freud, Leonor Frini, Leonora Carrington, among many others, under the eyes of the talented and brilliant director Mark Romanek (who had already directed the brilliant Rain video). It was the first electronic onslaught on Madonna's career. The video is one of the most striking and brings the surrealist influence of the artists Remedios Varo, Frida Kahlo, Lucien Freud, Leonor Frini, Leonora Carrington, among many others, under the watchful eye of the talented and brilliant director Mark Romanek (who had already directed the brilliant video Rain). The work is so important and significant for modern art that it is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMa). He had one of the most expensive budgets for a video clip at the time, $ 5 million. This video brings countless symbologies, meanings and re-readings of surrealist works. The freakshowbusiness blog has done some time ago a thorough analysis of what is portrayed in this video and what message Madonna wanted to pass. The general idea is of death and life, birth and rebirth through art, especially the surrealist, who preaches creation through the unconscious, the work of art as the visual concretization of dreams, something that can not be expressed in words, abandoning the logic and reason. As the lyrics say. Lucien Freud is not surrealistic like the other inspirers of the video, but is grandson of Sigmund Freud, father of the psychoanalysis and master of the interpretation of the dreams. The reference to the picture, therefore, can be a hint to the viewer, stating that the clip is based on dreams, on images of the unconscious and needs to be interpreted by a bias that runs away from the obvious. The light of the moon reflecting in the water inside a well is probably inspired by these two paintings by the Spanish surrealist artist Remedios Varo: Born Again (Renascer, 1960) and Moon Reflection (Moon Reflection, 1957). The reference in Los Amantes de Remedios is also very clear. Another strong surrealistic inspiration of Bedtime story is the film Sayat Nova (USSR, 1968), by the Armenian filmmaker Sergei Parajanov. The work, about the poet who gives it its name, is better known in the West as The color of Pomegranates. It is a surrealistic film, which intends to speak with the language of the soul, of the dreams, of the unconscious. From him came out several images that we find in the clip of Madonna, like the foot treading a bunch of grapes on written words, or the child being covered. SYMBOLISMS White dove: In the Christian tradition, baptism is a rebirth, the central theme of this clip. When Jesus was baptized by St. John the Baptist, a white dove came down to him. For Catholics, the animal represents the Holy Spirit. Fish: For Jung, it is a symbol of a deep state of unconsciousness, when seen swimming in a dream. For Christians, it is an ancient symbol of their belief. In times of Roman persecution, Christians used the fish symbol to identify themselves as followers of Jesus in secret. This is because the initials in Greek of "Jesus Christ son of God the Savior" form the word "fish". It was a way of saying a Christian without needing words for it, just like Madonna does in this clip. Unlike many of her previous videos, Madonna shows no cross on Bedtime story; however, this is his video with the largest number of Christian symbols. (At that time, 1995, she was not yet a Kabbalah supporter, an esoteric doctrine of Jewish origin that would dominate her music videos later.) It is no coincidence that in this clip a fish appears swimming over a verse of the song that has the following translation in Portuguese: "Words are useless, especially phrases" Madonna has already revealed that the scene is inspired by the work of Jenny Holzer, an American conceptual artist who designs or exposes giant-sized phrases in public places. Grape: For Christians, the grape symbolizes the joy of living, the great gift of God, and the fruitfulness of the Christian faith. And from the grape, trampled by human feet in the ancient tradition, comes the wine, symbol of the blood of Jesus. Eye: As an ancient Christian symbol, the eye represents ideas, concepts and abstractions, so dear to surrealism and Bedtime story. It is also the image of the omniscience of God. Fallen Angel: For Christians, angels are links between God and man, divine messengers. And fallen angels, stripped of their wings, are those who have been banished from Paradise because they rebelled against God. Lucifer is the best known of fallen angels. Egg and Child: The egg appears at some point in Bedtime story. For Christianity, it is a symbol of the generation of life, birth and rebirth. It is the cocoon where the origin of life is, and not by chance the female sex cell has been called egg. At Easter, the egg represents the renewal of life, just like the child. Sunflower: Another symbol of Easter. It represents the search for light in Christ. Just as the sunflower seeks the Sun, Christians seek in Jesus the way, the truth, and the life. Octogram: The eight-pointed star is, in some cultures, another symbol of creation and fertility. For Christians, it symbolizes regeneration. Therefore, many fonts have an octagonal base. In a video scene, a child appears seated on an eight-pointed star. Pregnancy: Obviously, it is the life in gestation, the miracle of life, the imminence of the birth of a child and the rebirth of the mother. Peacock: In the scenes where Madonna appears pregnant in Bedtime story, there is a peacock on each side. In early Christianity, the peacock symbolizes resurrection and is related to Easter. For others, the peacock is also a symbol of eternity, due to the ancient belief that its flesh does not deteriorate after death. But in other traditions, the peacock also represents vanity, the All-Seeing Eye, and the Antichrist. Water: Present throughout the music video, water symbolizes the origin, because, as they say, all life comes from water. Bathing is a rebirth, and not by chance is water essential for baptism. Also, getting into the water can also represent a dive into the unconscious for some cultures. Here it is back to the lyrics: Rock: In some cultures, the rock represents the womb, the place where life originates. In the Bible, rock is constantly cited as a reference to God and Christ. In the Old Testament, it represents the Creator's strength, protection, refuge, and salvation of the people. In the New Testament, Christ is the cornerstone of everything, it is the rock from which flows the spirit of life. Algae: The green that sprouts through the rocks under water is life being born and imposing itself. Algae is the primary source of oxygen, essential to life. A particular Bedtime story scene brings together this and the two above symbols: seaweed, stone and water: Book: The book, when opened, symbolizes the revelation of truth, the word of God. Poppy: Symbolizes spiritual drowsiness and sleep of death. Hence, she is often portrayed in crucifixions and the deaths of saints. From his flower is extracted opium, hallucinogenic drug. And opium is made of morphine, a drug that relieves unbearable pain, but can also cause hallucinations and lead to death. Circle: Another symbol of eternity, having no beginning or end. Skeleton: Universal symbol of death. In Christianity, the skull at the foot of the cross carries the message that everyone dies but can continue to live in Christ. Well: It is the source of water, of life. It represents the womb, place of birth and rebirth. It is also a remembrance of Jesus, the source of the water of life, as he referred to himself when he asked for water from a woman standing in front of a well. A certain scene from Bedtime story suggests that Madonna is inside a well, watched by a man on the surface. Moon and star: There are also Islamic symbols in Bedtime story. The moon next to a star is the best-known symbol of Islam. But it is also a representation of the power to carry through the cosmos. Dervishes: They are members of an Islamic sect whose dance in continuous whirls culminates with a hypnotic trance, in a ritual of delivery whose objective is the ecstasy. In general, they advocate open mind and art. They wear a white shirt (which represents a shroud) with a coat over it. Taking off the coat during the ritual is born to the truth. They dance around their own axis to feel in the eye of a hurricane, the quiet place in the midst of the storm, and so they connect with God, who is within everyone.

One of my favorite Madonna videos. The inspirations she gathered together to make this piece are many; from film, paintings, religion cyberpunk and more. When the song came out in 1995, it wasn’t well embraced by American audiences, who weren’t yet ready for EDM and the like but it was quite popular in Europe. As for what Madonna video I recommend you view next... I’d say... Express Yourself, Nothing Really Matters, Bad Girl or Hung Up.

The album was released in 1994, but the single was released in 1995. This was before Harry Potter books. Is it me, or some of the objects & elements in this video fits into the 'Deathly Hallows?' There were staffs that could be interpreted as the 'elder wand'. (as if two wands were duelling). A cloak that could be referred as the 'invisibility cloak' (the cloak that was thrown to the little blonde girl) & the resurrection stone (the cube with her face in it). And plus, there was a hat that looks like 'The Sorting Hat of Hogwarts.' Some witchcrafts also could be seen and there was a scene where she almost looked like a 'Veela' (where Madonna was floating on air with that long blonde hair). And the song is 'Bedtime Story.' It's probably just me 😅🤣😅🤣 I dunno

First time I saw the video in 1995 it was the very premiere on MTV plus her Bedtime Story Party. I was stunned because it was a complete departure from her previous single Take A Bow. Totally unexpected!!! Fantastic video kinda like a sleep dream research or something. Also this video was groundbreaking in 1995!! I'd recommend you What It Feels Like For A Girl(2001). Or else Keep It Together Live Blonde Ambition Tour(1990). Also Mer Girl/Sky Fits Heaven Live Drowned World Tour 2001!!! Madonna is just something else....

For me, it's right there in the song title "Bedtime Story": images in a dream state. Side note, I love Romanek's stuff.

Appropriately surreal and stunning video that is rumored to have cost upwards of $5 million being one of the most expensive music videos ever made

First of all love your madonna reactions, This one in particular is quite abstract but beautiful. Contains references to very famous paintings throughout the video.In fact this video was exhibited in a very famous art gallery for a long time. For me it is one of the most beautiful videos that she made in fact it is one of the most expensive in history. SALUDOS DESDE ARGENTINA (meaning greetings from Argentina)

These two have become my two favorites on this channel! I have been a Madonna fan since age 11, am 44 now. I’ve followed her career for a very, very long time. “Bedtime Story” is basically a dream. To date, it’s the most expensive video ever made which cost $5M in 1995 & would cost about $10M in 2021. Madonna has only performed this song once @ the Brit Awards in London. This music video contains surrealistic & new age imagery. You will see influences from artists such as; Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, Remedio Varos among others. Today, this video is permanently displayed @ the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Critically acclaimed & written by Björk, Nellee Hooper along w/ another artist but it escapes my head atm. You guys are so “Dude, I Lost My Car” (the movie) kinda guys & I think it’s hilarious!!!!! Everything to you guys is “poor quality”, “80’s vibe” or “very 90’s,” 🤣🤣🤣 We’re paying attention to the art here - the quality of it is beyond the director’s control as they’re limited to only using what’s available at the time. Art doesn’t suddenly become “better” bc its in better quality. That ugly bitch Mona Lisa was painted long ago. For me, I don’t find it exciting or interesting at all. She looks miserable to me & it gives me the depressing feeling Leonardo da Vinci realized how miserable this woman must’ve felt in her life. I don’t need a painting to see this - I see it in real life EVERY SINGLE DAY. Good work tho y’all!
