I was a 21 year old DJ when this dropped. No matter what hit you played at the time, nothing packed the dancefloor like a madonna track. this one was especially loved because it starts out a house track, then ends a semi techno track. the dancefloor was insane!

+Jesse Frost I was there, Jesse -- it was retro-tastic, as it was simultaneously "new/different" but also part of the first initial wave of 70's nostalgia that hit in the 90's (then again a decade or two later). Good mix of early 90's dance (which is still some of the best dance music ever) and 70's kitsch. Good times...

This was played at our work's Christmas party and I started doing some of the moves from the video, more as a bit of a laugh, really. However, much to my surprise, everyone started following my lead and the whole dance floor became a re-enactment of the video 70s dance sequence, with me unwittingly cast in the Madonna role! Hahahaha!!

Cannot believe I was 20 when this came out and now I am 40. This is probably Madonna's most romantic song to date (along with "Take A Bow") and Morales' remix triggers all the right old skool Disco-reminiscent sentimental elements of his veteran remix production. This should be a text-book example on how to do a classic remix.

As noted by others above (and elsewhere) -- _romantic_ ?! This song (*especially* when coupled with the music video that accompanied it) is *NOT* about "romance" : it's about the darker aspects of control, pseudo-and-not-so-pseudo psychological dominance/abuse, and multiple aspects of (sexual/relationship) co-dependency. "Daddy couldn't be all wrong...( _not gonna let you slip away, I'm gonna be there_ ...) ... and my Momma made me learn this song... ( _you're gonna bring your love to me, I'm gonna get you_ ...) " The lyrics are about *unhealthy* relationships: a father's domineering control, a mother's co-dependent need to "own" her child's love/affection, and how these factors influence the character(s) in the song/video in life towards having unhealthy relationships (as exampled by the the characters in the video, along with Madonna's character, being in very dangerous situations circa 70's-era, Studio54 after-parties in very shady/not-good circumstances). The only proper positive aspect of the song is the under-current of trying to break free from the pattern of unhealthy relationships, becoming more true to one's self, and _try_ to find a better love (which, per the dark ending of the video where Madonna is "caught" and her hope cut-away from her, vis-a-vis her balloon's cord being literally cut by the "devil" played by Udo Kier, is left with considerable uncertainty...) Soooooo... _yeahhhhh_ ... this is NOT a "romantic" song, not by a mile. (If that's what you got out of it, and it's been a positive thing for you over the years, then hey dude: more power to you, and I hope it stays that way, despite my clarifications above. But still... you *might* want to take a different-listen to this song, as-sung and inflected, with a different ear... 'cus it's *not* about what you think it is...)

Leo Light he sided with Mariah, Madonna couldn't really go for Mariah's repetitive sound. Morales became kind of stale by the mid 90s so technically speaking Madonna made the right choice.

How do you remixers do what you do? I mean,, Shep Pettibone didn't do this remix. I don't get the technology involved, and I read sound engineering texts and play synths, It mystifies me. Does the label provide you with licensed access to the master tracks? This is THE best version of this song. The remixes are often far better than her official releases, and she even does videos to some of them so they must be authorized,
