This was her very first tour, known as The Virgin Tour. If you notice the girls in the audience, and as you noted they all look "very 80s". Specifically they are dressed just like Madonna, who, in all her videos, single handedly created "the 80s look" for teenage girls and young women. Fashion-wise, it was revolutionary. People who dressed like her were called "wanna-bees"....the original coining of that term was directly related to her cultural impact. In 1986, with the Live to Tell video, she would dramatically alter her image for the first time. And would continue to do so throughout her career.

“Dress You Up” came off Madonna’s second album titled “Like A Virgin” and the video was filmed at her first stadium tour. Her first 2 albums were mainly focused on dance/pop tracks and it wasn’t until her third album that started to find her real voice, adding songs with moral messages and so on.

People slag her singing ability but if you’ve ever heard anyone try to sing a song of hers in karaoke, or tried it yourself, you’ll know it’s not as easy as people think. She actually does have a pretty voice that may not have the largest range, but she emotes well and varies her technique a lot. I don’t know any artist that does that sexy, breathy, sing/speak whisper better than her, for example.

Love it you're going for some old-school Madonna here, this is when I first started being a fan. Specifically the lucky star video was the first time I saw her when I was like 11 years old. That video made me a fan forever and this high-energy style of music was the Madonna sound back then, so once you check out some of the other song she'll see that it was very much how she was but you are feeling a bit of whiplash cuz we haven't gone that far back yet :-) this was her very first tour in the summer of 1985, touring the United States and Canada and I so wish I would have been able to go to that one. I caught the next tour in 1987 but she looked absolutely beautiful hair and every girl wanted to dress just like her, the phrase Madonna want to be his came from the store and that look! This song and music video were released in late 85. The song was originally released on the Like a Virgin album in late 84. And speaking of MJ she was shrewd enough to audition and get MJ's former manager Freddy DeMann after she recorded her first album in 83 when she needed a manager. She didn't have an appointment I believe and she just busted through his office door and started performing for him. And Madonna was smart enough to get MJ's musical director Patrick Leonard and his drummer Jonathan Moffett and maybe a few more musicians that toured with MJ and his brothers as Jackson 5's final tour called the Victory Tour in 84 when Madonna and her then boyfriend Jellybean went to see their concert in NYC at the Madison Square Garden. And she got the idea to use the stairs from watching Prince perform in concert.

This was her lucky star era from her first album, I had a guy in my 8th grade home room who was obsessed with her to the point he would dress like her with the mesh shirts and gloves, I was in the seventh grade when her first record came out and her first hit song was lucky star.

This song was released on her 1984 album but the single and performance were from 1985. You need to react to "Everybody" and "Burning Up" (her first 2 singles ever). Other singles you will certainly love and need to react from 1985 are "Into To Groove" and "Gambler". Her voice is higher in 1996/1998 after she done the movie based on the "Evita" opera-rock and had opera singing lessons. If you react to her songs "You Must Love Me", "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" or "Ray of Light" you see that.

Most women's voices do deepen as they age, but there's also another reason for why Madonna had a Minnie Mouse quality to her songs early on. Her vocals were not strong (She was a dancer and a drummer prior to singing, and she never trained her voice.), and her first producer had her sing carefully to stay on pitch and then he sped up her recorded tracks slightly to compensate. That made her voice sound more highly pitched than it ever really was. Her third album, True Blue, features a less modified voice.

It's not a Madonna sounding song because it was written by Andrea LaRusso and Peggy Stanziale and produced by Nile Rodgers who wanted songs like those by the disco/funk band Chic. Madonna agreed to sing/dance to it but that's about it.
