Madonna was studying Hinduism at that time, the song Shanti/Ashtangi is an ancient sanscrit prayer. In this video she portrays a mystical creature of the desert and the sign in the palm of her hand is the hindu word "om" which is the vibration of the universe, and the hands are painted with henna which is a traditional hindu ritual. And she is releasing her inner animals in the video. It was shot at the Mojave Desert. She also applies elements from Hinduism in her songs The Power of Goodbye and To Have and Not to Hold. In her live performance of Shanti Ashtangi at the Mtv VMAs she portrays the hindu god Shiva. Sisley, Madonna's name is Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone (represented as MLVC in cover art during the Like A Prayer era). During the Ray of Light era, working with William Orbit allowed her to explore electric music in a new way - she created a character from her third name, Veronica Electronica. Hence the 3 Madonna's in the vid, for each of her names.

song and video were so different to what was playing on the radio and MTV back then as far as popmusic went. That was when a more happy bubblegum popsound by girlgroups like the Spice Girls and boybands like Nsync and Backstreet Boys ruled the popworld. She also brought electronica back into popmusic with this album, a trend which many other artists followed

Gosh 21 years ago this month FROZEN was released! I was 6 and remember first seeing this video and being so so SCARED by it but i loved it...and yes been a fan since... 21 years cannot believe it... Madonna and her storytelling and visuals WOAH! I loved this gothic/spiritual Madonna here and the areas and scope she went to with Ray of Light on all platforms and where it lead to beyond this era..... incredible stuff...timeless art.

I know that the original plan was to create shots with up to a couple of hundreds of Madonna's forming structures and shapes in the desert which would rip apart and change into dogs and ravens etc, but things had to be scaled down due to money and time constraints, because they had planned a 4 day shoot and only ended up being able to shoot for 2 days because of a monsoon which wreaked havoc on the production. Chris Cunningham has stated that he was very frustrated that he never managed to finish his vision of the video due to poor organisation on his part and a clear concept.

The video also started a trend of henna tattoos, as seen as on M's hands in the video. The song and video is considered one of her best.

It is so wonderful to see someone as young and vibrant and energetic as you appreciate and adore madonna as any true fan of hers does. Watching your reaction to scene her video in full scale for the first real time almost made me cry I wanted to make a reaction video to your reaction video LOL. I have loved madonna for every day she has been madonna for 35 + years and again to see someone as young and is spirited and is vibrant is you love the woman that I love the way I love her just makes my heart first with joy. You are a ray of light... thank you..

Frozen is one of my top 10 favorite Madonna tracks. Something about the humming with her own harmonies just captivates me the whole time. And I love the dark mysticism in the desert theme with special effects ever so subtle but so effective. I remember this song peaked at #2 and I was like “Oooh! Damn, so close to number 1.” BY the way, Frozen was her 6th #2, the most by any artist.

Another fabulous review!! Loved this video and song when it was released!! You should check out the Stereo MC Mix when you get a chance... amazing mix! I always remember her saying that she chose the desert to film the video as the song is about being emotionally “frozen” and the desert depicts isolation! She also named her character “Veronica” which is one of her middle names 😊

Also if you enjoyed Frozen as a video and song I Would implore you to watch and absorb Madonna's song ghosttown from her 13th album Rebel Heart. As a die hard life long fan of Madonna, I really was moved deeply by the depth and brevity of this one song. I've always held in my firm heart the belief that some of Madonna's finest work comes from her power ballads Frozen being one of them and GhostTown being another. And though I just discovered you today you have been a wonderful encounter. The emotions which Madonna evoke in you us priceless. And now as a subscriber to your channel I intend to see the full range of Madonna's through your reactions. Like a Virgin you are touched for the very first time through her music and I through your reactions.

It did have some backlash for being reminiscent of witchcraft
@FranklySpeaking.5 жыл бұрын
It did NOT receive ANY backlash whatsoever! No satanic or witchcraft comparisons were made. It was just a dark, brooding video that fit the song. It was a huge hit, and an introduction to a whole new Madonna. And it was brilliant! I don't know where some of you come up with these manufactured controversies.
