It is the symbol of “Om”, which is a mystic and sacred syllable in the teachings of Hinduism. And she had just converted to Hinduism and was doing an learning Yoga at that time also. Made in 1998, Jan. 7-11 in the Mojave Desert in California, and it was cold, real cold. Madonna said that one night it got down to -20 F.

Twenty years ago when I was a preteen, I discovered Madonna right when she released this single as the lead single for her album "Ray of Light". MTV and VH1 (when both used to actually show music videos all day every day) was heavily promoting it and did a whole Madonna music video marathon/retrospective for weeks. I fell in love with her music and her right then and there and haven't looked back. If you have time to just look through her career through her music videos in chronological order, you'll get a great time capsule of pop/dance/underground NYC and LA urban music filtered for the mainstream/electronica/etc. at the time she released music encompassing those genres and you also get a great sense of an artist evolving and putting out chart topping music for over 30 years. You will also see how music videos evolved and how many directors pushed the art form and really made art through music videos in the 1990s. The thing about Madonna that I love is that at her zenith she was at the top of the mainstream by embracing and putting out music that really wasn't mainstream (like LGBTQ culture, European dance, sex positive circles, etc.). She was smart enough to learn and make music with producers and other artists to filter the sounds to make it sound like something teens in suburbia would listen to but at the same time keep the integrity of the source. She hasn't been as successful at that lately, but I find her music is simply something one can only admire even now.

At this particular time Madonna was deeply involved in Jewish mysticism and practicing Kabbalah. This video was inspired by the spiritual magic some believe resides in the study of Practical/Magical Kabbalah. There is something absolutely spellbinding about setting this type of song to the striking visuals and haunting melody. Just one advice: Madonna cannot be reduced to Lady Gaga. She is is phenomenon on her own; Lady Gaga has to do with Madonna, Madonna has nothing to do with Lady Gaga. Listen to her every record in their context, and see how she changed that what was there and what she did. She is not a genius in the orinal sense, but she is a genius nevertheless.

Frozen was the lead single from Ray of Light and it was released in 1998, she was 40. So it was almost 20 years ago.The album won 5 grammys including best pop album. The video is even more impressive as it hasn't dated that much. She's 59 at the moment, turning 60 in August 2018. Regarding the comparisons with Lady Gaga you have to go back earlier in her career. When people compare Gaga and Madonna, the similarities have more to do with being edgy, controversial, sexually strong, empowered, LGBT allies, chameleons who reinvent their image etc etc. Gaga cites Madonna as an idol and you see Madonna’s qualities in Gaga’s edginess, bravery, sexual strength etc Madonna paved the way for current female artists to be courageous, reinventive and sexually empowered. She was a gay rights activist long before it was fashionable and made gays, blacks and powerful women more visible. Gaga is a mix between Bowie and Madonna. I love Gaga but Madonna was the true original who paved the way for other artists to be who they are. So the similarities are more in the qualities than in the images, if that makes sense? Hugs xxx
